Volkswagen Taigo. The Brazilian Nivus shows off its restyling

  • The Volkswagen Taigo came to market in 2021
  • It is a technical clone of the Volkswagen T-Cross and Volkswagen Polo
  • It is manufactured at the Volkswagen Group's technical centre in Landaben (Navarra - Spain)
  • This restyling should include Mild Hybrid mechanics to reduce consumption and emissions.

Volkswagen Nivus Brazil - Volkswagen Taigo Europe 9

Very soon they will be fulfilled three years since the volkswagen taigo arrived on the European market. This model was born to complement the range of the German house with the T-Cross below and the T-Roc just above. But this model has several aces up its sleeve. First of all because It is not an exclusive product of Europe but rather an adaptation for our continent. Yes, because the first market that could buy it was Latin America because there it is sold under the name Nivus.

The second ace that this B-SUV has up its sleeve is that It is based on the Volkswagen Group's MQB-A0 platform. Thanks to it, it shares technology with its range brothers Polo and T-Cross and even a manufacturing center. Indeed, the third ace is that for Europe it comes out of the assembly line that the brand has in the Landaben factory (Navarra – Spain)We were able to visit the factory, see how it was assembled and the choreography that its robots dance. But the interesting thing is that It will soon be launching the same restyling that its brother Nivus already sports....

The renewed Volkswagen Taigo continues to look elegant, sporty and youthful at the same time…

Volkswagen Nivus Brazil - Volkswagen Taigo Europe 10

As we said The Volkswagen Taigo is nothing more than the Nivus of Mercosur. Both models are technical clones and their aesthetics are also identical. And since the one sold in Mercosur arrived in 2020, it was to be expected that it would not take long to catch up with a restyling. And here it is. What do you think of the result? As you can see, its look takes a step forward to be on par with the brand's latest launches. The reference is the new Tiguan and this is obvious from its Refurbished front and optics.

Now the Nivus (our Taigo) stands out for using some more stylized optics that as in the current model they go joined in the center by a thin LED strip. LED technology is present as well as a new interior design pattern. For its part, the bumper and the air intakes that go into it slightly modify its physiognomy but it is just another detail of nuance. Regarding the side view, there is little to add since, being a simple and mere restyling, it is limited to including new alloy wheels in different designs.

If we move to the rear we will find a treatment similar to that used in the rest of the planes. The changes are minimal as they are limited to Bumper design with a new diffuser and little else. The optics, their technology, design and location remain the same, so we will have to wait to see what changes the European version receives. In the old continent there is a catadioptric that crosses the entire width of the body on the bumper and in the Mercosur model it is not. Nor are many other details.

Inside the doors, the evolution of the renewed Volkswagen Nivus is notable although not radical. The central touch screen is now 10,1 inches and the one-step connectivity with the renewed Volkswagen Play system. According to the brand, there is now a hotspot for users to connect to the Internet independently and enjoy applications like Waze or Spotify. In addition, quality is improved with new textile materials for the seats or door panels.

For now, the mechanical range is unknown, although in Mercosur there will be a version with 128 HP…

Volkswagen Nivus Brazil - Volkswagen Taigo Europe 1

As we have already said, the Volkswagen Nivus is our Taigo, but its ranges are not the same, since in Mercosur the emission standards are more lax. Therefore, the brand is not going to modify the engine. 1.0 TSI family EA211 three-cylinder turbo for a total of 116 hp or 128 hp depending on whether gasoline or ethanol is used. For the transmission, the system provided by Aisin with 6 ratios and code TF-60SN is maintained. As for traction, it is always to the front axle. without option for all-wheel drive.

Therefore, if in Mercosur the Nivus, or Taigo, does not change its mechanical range when it arrives in Europe, the situation will be identical. Here we know it with a 1.0 TSI three-cylinder turbo with 95 hp and 116 hp or a 1.5 TSI four-cylinder with 150 hp for the most powerful versions. As for transmissions, the 6-speed manual will be maintained in the less powerful or a 7-speed DSG optional on the 116 hp and standard on the 150 hp. The traction, as in its Mercosur brother, is exactly the same…

However, there is something to criticize about the renewed Volkswagen Nivus. When we were able to test the Taigo we complained that The haptic touch controls for the climate control and steering wheel were not a solution optimal in terms of ergonomics. But the brand, far from paying attention to us, reaffirms itself by keeping them after the restyling. We will have to see if the version for Europe keeps them or if they have improved compared to the already known ones. Another aspect is the quality that, although good, It abuses hard materials that do not go with a model of its price.
