Toyota Tundra 2022: The pick ups are not the private preserve of the Yankees...

2022 Toyota Tundra Platinum

The pickup truck segment is one of the strongest in the Americas, much of Asia, and parts of Africa. It's no wonder, then, that there are companies that specialize in creating and selling these types of vehicles. One of the best known is Isuzu, although its sales volume compared to Ford or General Motors is negligible. Nevertheless, brands like Mitsubishi and Nissan are also significant players. However, there are new developments that represent a turning point.

We're talking about the arrival of the new Toyota Tundra . The Japanese automaker's pickup has been at the center of a media storm for several months. Firstly, because its design was leaked through an image that surfaced without the brand's permission. This setback, which spoiled the surprise, was cleverly used to promote its debut with a series of teasers. And now, after a short wait, we can finally talk about the result, and to be honest, it's very positive…

The design of the new Toyota Tundra is more rugged and forceful…

Aesthetically speaking, the new Toyota Tundra is more rugged and assertive than its predecessor. To achieve this look, the Japanese firm's design team employed several techniques. First, there's a tall, very vertical front end that incorporates a generously sized grille . It features an inverted "C"-shaped frame that connects it to the ground. Furthermore, the design of this element varies depending on the version the driver chooses.

We also can't overlook the full LED headlights, which are now more angular and polygonal. Changes are also noticeable in the side view, such as sculpted wheel arches protected by plastic moldings . Depending on the version, it features side steps with different finishes and sizes. The styling of the mirrors and door handles also varies, as does the number of doors available, which can be two or four.

The alloy wheels are a first for the range. Finally, we must discuss the rear, which remains true to the classic pickup truck design. That is to say, it features simple, straight lines to provide ample cargo space. The full LED taillights , which also operate the tailgate release, are a highlight. The bumper has clean, practical lines, while still incorporating decorative elements and logos.

Revolutionary interior with state-of-the-art technology…

Toyota Tundra TRD-Pro

While the exterior styling of the new Toyota Tundra has changed, the interior seems to have jumped several decades ahead. Depending on the trim level, the designers have opted for either an analog or digital instrument cluster . The dashboard features a new central touchscreen, available in 8-inch or 14-inch sizes. Connectivity options include Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto, as well as Amazon Music and Apple Podcasts.

The other elements that make up its appearance are also new. The steering wheel stands out , which in the TRD-Pro version boasts a logo and a central strip at the top to mark the center. The placement of the air vents and the climate control with analog buttons contribute to good ergonomics. We also can't overlook the wide and bulky center console , which, as usual, has several storage compartments.

Powerful mechanical offer and with V6 biturbo hybrid version included

2022 Toyota Tundra i-FORCE_MAX

To finish our review of the new Toyota Tundra, let's talk about its technical aspects. First, the brand's engineers have opted for a new platform which, among other improvements, includes a multi-link rear suspension with coil springs. Furthermore, the sporty TRD-Pro version features higher-performance shock absorbers and a stabilizer bar. But the biggest change is in the engine lineup, with the V8 being dropped.

The entry-level engine is the 3.5-liter V6 twin-turbo , producing 290 kW (394 hp) and 649 Nm of torque. At the top of the range is the i-FORCE MAX hybrid , which adds an electric motor to the 10-speed automatic transmission. This combination delivers even greater performance, with 326 kW (443 hp) and 790 Nm of torque. Both engines share the same block, and, as is standard in the US, the 10-speed automatic transmission is common to both models.
