La autonomy of Tesla Model 3 and Model Y has increased overnight in the configurator of the page of United States. A jump that seems to correspond to the units that will be delivered from 2022 in that country and that will arrive sooner or later on the European continent.
For the moment, on the Spanish Tesla page there are no changes. For example, the Tesla Model 3 Long Range maintains the same, and impressive, 614 km according to the WLTP cycle. Across the Atlantic, however, this same version increases its range by 5 miles (8 km). However, the most relevant changes are in other more modest and cheaper versions.
The basic Model 3 is the most benefited
That is the case of Model 3 Autonomy Plus rear-wheel drive, which gains 10 miles (16 km) with its 18-inch wheels. As indicated by the brand in the configurator, this autonomy is reduced by 8 km if you opt for the 19-inch wheels as an option.
This update is accompanied by a name change, which at least in its country of origin is simply called RWD, eliminating the nickname Autonomy Plus. Although it remains to be seen if that change also reaches our country.
The Model Y also improves autonomy
As to Model Y Great Autonomy, the change is somewhat more modest with only 4 more miles (6,5 km) with the standard 19-inch wheels. That would also be reduced with the 20-inch wheels as an option.
It is not clear what changes have led to the autonomy update in these models. Since in Tesla cars, the continuous update your from software and energy management involve changes almost as relevant as the improvements in batteries and other parts of the hardware. Even so, LFP (lithium ferrophosphate) batteries along with some update are the main suspects of said change, since the brand has been announcing its use in the basic ranges of its models for some time. That is where the increase is most noticeable.
