The Polo GTI is the sportiest and highest-performing version of the Volkswagen Polo , a hatchback with a conventional two-box body. This car was updated by its manufacturer in 2021 , receiving both aesthetic and technological changes. At that time, production of the GTI had been discontinued, but in 2022 Volkswagen decided to relaunch it with 7 more horsepower (increasing from 200 to 207). Overall, it can be described as a car with dynamic handling far superior to the average in its class, without sacrificing a good degree of practicality.
Like its main rivals in the Spanish market, the Ford Fiesta ST (200 hp) and Hyundai i20 N (204 hp), the Polo GTI is aimed at customers looking for a compact car with five doors and five seats , offering high performance and a fun and enjoyable driving experience . It's available from €34.540 , so despite its relatively small size, it's not exactly cheap. For that price, you get an automatic transmission and plenty of useful equipment.

207 CV and DSG change: keys to achieve high performance and low consumption
The Volkswagen Polo GTI is equipped with a turbocharged 2,0-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine producing up to 207 hp and 320 Nm of torque. Located on the front axle, the only driven axle of the two, this engine is paired with a 7-speed DSG automatic transmission that operates via a dual-clutch system . This gearbox allows for manual gear changes using paddle shifters located behind the steering wheel . These paddles are made of plastic, are not fixed, and offer precise operation.
Thanks to the aforementioned figures and a curb weight of 1.450 kg, the car in question accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 6,5 seconds and reaches a top speed of 240 km/h . These are excellent numbers for the segment in which it competes. However, its fuel consumption is not high . Volkswagen has achieved a homologated average consumption of 6,8 l/100 km according to the WLTP procedure, which is very good considering its speed. On the other hand, the car's fuel tank has a capacity of only 40 liters , which, although typical for its class, proves insufficient for long journeys (the range rarely exceeds 500 kilometers).

Its size and design allow you not to miss the Volkswagen Golf GTI
The Polo GTI measures 4,07 meters long , 1,75 meters wide, and 1,43 meters high (0,015 meters less than a standard model). Its wheelbase is 2,55 meters. These are typical dimensions for a standard compact car from a couple of decades ago (today's superminis have grown considerably in size), so it has a cabin suitable for five people. Four will travel with reasonable comfort if they are not very tall, as the rear center seat is very narrow and designed for short journeys.
The interior dimensions are generous compared to the average car in its class . In this respect, the Polo GTI doesn't differ significantly from the base model. It stands out from its rivals in length and width in both the first and second rows of seats . However, cabin height is somewhat limited, especially in the front and particularly if equipped with a sunroof. On the other hand, the trunk is quite large: a minimum capacity of 351 liters , which can be expanded to over 1,000 liters by folding down the rear seatbacks.
Compared to the current (2020) Volkswagen Golf GTI , a higher-end model with which it shares many aesthetic features and very similar performance (although its fuel consumption is noticeably higher), this Polo GTI has similar cabin dimensions (slightly smaller in the rear) and a cargo space that is 23 liters smaller , which is practically negligible. Considering that the Golf is 22 cm longer, the Polo is a generally better-optimized vehicle and offers greater practicality in urban environments (it's a bit easier to park). Of course, it's also much cheaper: around €14.000 , which, in our opinion, isn't worth the extra cost.

Average quality, a lot of equipment and a disappointing multimedia system
Clearly, the quality of the materials and fit and finish of the Polo GTI is inferior to that of its "big brother ," a more solid and well-rounded compact car in almost every sense. This isn't to say it's poorly built. It's simply that it uses a shortened version of the MQB platform and a series of interior components where hard, mid-range plastics predominate (they aren't rough to the touch, but they feel quite cheap). This is typical in this segment, and Volkswagen has chosen not to stand out by using more substantial or better-looking parts. At least the bright red trim on the dashboard and center console, as well as the numerous crimson details and GTI badges , are original and contribute to a sporty and carefree atmosphere.
In terms of equipment, this car boasts a high level of technology and comfort features . For example, it comes standard with seven airbags (including a front center airbag), ISOFIX child seat anchors in three of the five seats, a comprehensive suite of driver assistance systems (lane departure warning and traffic sign recognition are optional), adaptive LED matrix headlights with daytime running lights , front fog lights, four driving modes , an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a fully manually adjustable steering wheel and front seats, a center armrest, dual-zone climate control , tinted rear windows, dynamic taillights, striped fabric upholstery , a manual handbrake (with lever), an illuminated trunk, and 17-inch alloy wheels (18-inch wheels are an extra cost).
The most disappointing aspect of the Polo GTI, without a doubt, is its infotainment system and multimedia controls . This system consists of two screens: an 8-inch touchscreen located at the top of the center console and a standard 10-inch screen behind the steering wheel , which serves as the digital instrument cluster. As has become common with other Volkswagen Group products over the past three years, the software in this vehicle is prone to numerous glitches : sudden shutdowns, unresponsiveness, erratic responses to the haptic buttons for the climate control, steering wheel, and central screen, poor mobile compatibility with Apple devices that causes pixelation and image distortion in Google Maps while using the app, and so on. Furthermore, the main display, while intuitive, is not particularly fast and suffers from excessive glare in direct sunlight. In short, it falls short of the standards expected of this brand.

Driving impressions: the essence of a true German hot hatch
The Volkswagen Polo GTI can be defined, in dynamic terms, as the "perfect" front-wheel-drive sports car . This car handles very well, without reaching the "radical" and "precise" of, for example, a Fiesta ST. It's still a car with a chassis that prioritizes stability and grip over comfort, but it does so with certain concessions to comfort , which contributes to the perception that it's a true German "hot hatch ," on par with the Golf GTI: easy to drive at high speeds, with agile and predictable reactions, but above all, well-balanced.
We tested a unit equipped with a sport suspension that the brand calls Sport Select, featuring adaptive dampers and a thicker front stabilizer bar. The difference between the standard and sport modes is noticeable, but not dramatic. In its standard setting, the suspension is already quite firm, but not harsh . It handles bumps of any size well, but its quality isn't quite enough to prevent the jarring impacts over sharp speed bumps, common in urban environments. In its stiffest setting, weight transfers are quicker and cornering is noticeably improved.
Regarding the engine and gearbox , little needs to be said: it's a perfectly matched combination that translates into excellent performance for this market segment. The engine has more than enough power to deliver a thrilling driving experience, while the DSG transmission operates smoothly, efficiently, and with a lively feel. The truth is, you don't miss a manual gearbox because Volkswagen has created a fun, enjoyable hatchback with the essence of a traditional GTI.

Furthermore, despite being a 2-liter gasoline engine, the fuel consumption it can achieve is surprisingly low , especially considering it's not exactly a lightweight model (it weighs around 1,5 tons). In the city, it's difficult to get below 8 liters per 100 km, but on the highway at legal speeds, it's possible to maintain 6 liters per 100 km if conditions are favorable (light load, light winds, gentle inclines, etc.). With Eco mode, it's possible to coast , that is, without engine braking, maximizing inertia when the accelerator pedal is not pressed.
Two aspects stand out, in a good way: the excellent illumination provided by the IQ.LIGHT headlights at night and the braking power of the Polo GTI despite not having any exceptional brakes. On the other hand, the seats can be somewhat tiring on long journeys, a consequence of the vehicle's utilitarian yet sporty nature. The driving position is standard and suitable for people up to 1,90 meters tall. With the most dynamic settings, the engine sound seems to emanate from the speakers . This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it creates a less pure and more artificial sensation.
Otherwise, the steering setup seems quite adequate (although we would have preferred it a bit less filtered in a GTI), handling and visibility are good, while the ride quality is outstanding for this class of car : sound insulation, stability, and a sense of airtightness are above average for cars of its size and price. Minor interior rattles (rubbing) have appeared after approximately 7.500 km and one year of use.

Volkswagen Polo GTI 2023 prices: an increasingly less affordable toy
Speaking of price, the Volkswagen Polo GTI has a starting price of €34.540 , although this can exceed €40.000 with optional equipment (as was the case with the unit we tested). This is a reasonable amount considering the car's advantages : versatility, over 200 hp, and an automatic transmission. Furthermore, it comes with a generous amount of standard equipment . However, if you only consider its exterior dimensions, it's a high price for a subcompact car.
Compared to its alternatives, it's by far the most expensive option : the Fiesta ST costs €31.250 and the i20 N €31.440. It's quite surprising, to say the least, that less than five years ago , when the second-generation Polo GTI was first launched, Volkswagen was asking a minimum of €23.920 for it (manual transmission version). In other words, to get this car in 2023, you have to pay almost 50% more than in 2018.

Conclusion: the most balanced utility with which you can have fun on a daily basis
Whether expensive or cheap, there's no other high-performance five-door hatchback as complete, versatile, and well-rounded as this one . We're thrilled that there are cars that, while not fundamentally excelling in any one area or being characterized by a specific trait, do almost everything well (and this is one of them). The Polo GTI is a fun, yet neutral car, designed to appeal to the widest range of drivers.
The previous "almost" stems from a multimedia system that, hopefully, the German brand will be able to improve soon. In any case, it's not the worst aspect of a car designed for driving enjoyment, even though it's loaded with comfort and active safety features . There are plenty of details that proudly reference its GTI status, an acronym that this Polo honors with its excellent qualities.
