Utility vehicles today are in a very relevant place within our market, since they are positioned at number two within the best-selling car categories, only below small SUVs, so it is about a type of vehicle highly demanded in Spain. In today's test we are with a member of the utilities, the Peugeot 208.
We have a 208 with the simplest mechanics, a 1.2-liter PureTech engine that offers 75 hp and 118 Nm of torque. As for his finished, Its about ActivePack, so it is a more or less intermediate equipment but very complete and with everything you need to go comfortably in this Peugeot .
Attractive and youthful appearance, this is the Peugeot 208
The Peugeot 208 is characterized by being a segment b car with very contained dimensions, only 4,05 meters long and 1,74 wide. In this way, this utility vehicle becomes a perfect model for mainly urban use.
If we start talking about your front part, at first it highlights its front grille with chrome inserts and 3D look. Next to it, we see some large optics that although they are not full LED, the high beam and daytime running lights are, so its lighting is really good.
In the lateral Some mirrors stand out in gloss black to make greater contrast and some inch wheels 16 with tires in size 195 and profile 55. We also find some light and marked wheel arches but all in the color of the body.
Moving towards the back, pilots are totally halogen in this Active Pack finish. In addition, as aesthetic details, we find a small gloss black spoiler and a totally real exhaust outlet, something that is always appreciated in these times.
A very minimalist interior but with good adjustments
First I would like to point out that its interior settings are really good, practically nothing creaks to the touch, something that is always appreciated. Of course, its finishes are typical of a car in this segment, hard plastics, gloss black and a carbon fiber simile to give it a sportier look.
Knowing its dimensions we cannot expect a very habitable interior, so space is tight. However, what is most striking is the little buttons we found, since everything is mainly focused on the 7-inch multimedia screen, even the air conditioning system.
El infotainment system is simple, easy to use and has integration with Apple Car Play and Android Auto although not wirelessly. On the other hand, the instrument panel is analog but we do have a small display to see speed, consumption and other information.
Their seats of fabric with red stitching, they have a very good softness and touch, so they are really comfortable, in addition to a very curious design. Clearly we don't have electric adjustment, it's all manual, but yes I would appreciate it if it had at least lumbar adjustment, something that the back would appreciate.
Rear seats somewhat fair for me 1,94 meters
Advancing to the second row of seats, the little one from the French firm clearly does not offer spectacular habitability, it must be remembered that it is only 4 meters from the car. With my 1,94 meters I practically do not fit, both for head and legs with the driver's seat adjusted to my height, although people of average height will be comfortable here.
On the other hand, we don't have any kind of center armrest, no USB type outlets either and much less aeration. In the end, it is a very simple car without too many fancy things.
Very acceptable trunk for its dimensions
Yes, the Peugeot 208 is one of the utilities that has more space in the trunk. Cube a capacity of 309 liters a very acceptable number and that will allow us to fit even a medium-sized suitcase and a small one without any problem.
On the other hand, in the double bottom we can find the puncture repair kit next to a small hole to leave not very bulky objects.
What are the engines available in the Peugeot 208?
It's time to touch on the available mechanics of the 208, which They start from 75 hp to 136 hp in a 100% electric version called E-208. The gasoline engines are 1.2 liters and 3 cylinders with 75 hp, 100 hp and 130 hp in the top-of-the-range GT finish. Depending on which engine we choose, we can choose between manual or automatic gearbox.
With regards to diesel, there is only the 102 hp and manual gearbox. On the other hand, the E-208 offers 136 hp, a 50 kWh capacity battery and an electric range that homologates 340 kilometers according to the WLTP cycle.
At the wheel of the Peugeot 208, is this 75 hp mechanic recommended?
It's time to get behind the controls of the 208 and really see how this utility of only 75 hp goes. Starting with tours on urban roads, you do not appreciate its low power, you simply notice that it is a very maneuverable and comfortable car to go around the city, something that we will appreciate if our main use is that.
But as we merge onto the highway, that's when you notice that this 208 has a fairly fair power. Accelerate, accelerate fully and very little by little you gain speed. In the end this mechanic does the 0 to 100 in 13,2 seconds so yes, the answer is somewhat poor.
However, when we manage to reach 120 km/h, it is a very stable and comfortable car. The bad thing is that by having only 5 gears, the engine remains very high in turns, at approximately 3.500. It is clearly a car designed for the city, but it will allow us from time to time to go out on the road, although yes, not very loaded.
Without a doubt, as I mentioned before, the Peugeot 208 with this 75 hp mechanics has a clear focus for mainly urban use. If we are looking to have a little more thrust and our approach is to make the occasional trip, the 100 hp engine will be perfect for that use.
How about the comfort it offers?
As yes it has surprised me is that its engine is not very noticeable in the passenger compartment, even on the road with such a high rpm. As far as it goes, the level of insulation of the 208 is very correct and also does not cause much aerodynamic noise.
As for the driving comfort of the French utility, equips a suspension system with a somewhat firm setting. It doesn't really feel uncomfortable or anything like that, I personally like it that way as it keeps the car in place without excessive rocking. On the other hand, the 55 profile tires help to better filter the imperfections of the asphalt.
Fuel consumption Peugeot 208 PureTech 75 CV
Continuing towards one of the most important points in running times. The average in combined use is reflected in a consumption of 6,5 liters per 100 km, acceptable for the type of car it is. However, in road yes we can see stockings 6 liters approximately while in city would go up to 7 liters.
In the end, in this consumption section, I think that it penalizes the mechanics a lot since we are going to accelerate in a more forceful way in order to obtain a greater responseIn this way it is the easiest way to increase its average consumption, but we will have no choice if we do not want to drive like a true "Flanders".
All in all, very good value for money
Before finishing with the Peugeot 208 test, we have to talk about the conclusions. It really is a car with a very good product/price ratio, since this version that comes with a very acceptable level of equipment part from 19.240 euros without any discounts from the French firm.
starting with the positive points, this utility seems to me to be a perfect option for mainly urban journeys thanks to its small dimensions and great maneuverability, so it will be very comfortable to park even in big cities.
Como Bad points I would say that this 75 hp mechanic has a hard time gaining speed and when we are loaded the lack of power will be noticeable, so it is not suitable for all types of use. Continuing, I have to mention the lack of physical buttons inside, it is practically all centered on the infotainment screen.
