Test Peugeot 2008 1.2 PureTech 130 GT (with video)

Test Peugeot 2008

Peugeot It has renewed a good part of its range in the last two years. One of the most anticipated new models due to its high demand and popularity is the Peugeot 2008, which debuts its second generation. How could it be otherwise, we have already got behind the wheel of this B-SUV and examined it thoroughly, with video included.

Logically, the segment in which this new Peugeot 2008 is fighting is very close, with models that are also very successful, such as the Seat Arona, Renault Captur, Skoda Kamiq or Ford Puma among many others. For this test we have opted for a Peugeot 2008 in GT finish and with the gasoline engine 1.2 PureTech 130 hp linked to the 6-speed manual gearbox.

convincing from the outside

The new Peugeot 2008 completely change compared to the previous one. Now it is considerably larger, but the most striking thing is its design. As you can see, it takes the aesthetic features of other recently renovated models, such as the 208, the 3008 or the 508 sedan.

Length Width Height Battle
Length Width Height Battle
4.300 mm 1.770 mm 1.550 mm 2.605 mm

At the front we find new LED headlights, the “fangs” that make daytime lighting and two generous air intakes. Undoubtedly, Peugeot is committed to design to convince the market, and it has been working very well in recent years.

This unit comes with GT sport trim, which enhances its sporty appearance with specific bumpers and wheels, and many black details. For example, the mirror caps, the pillars, the window surrounds and the roof are in gloss black.

The rear three quarters looks for a coupé and youthful aesthetic without harming habitability, using an ascending line in the rear area of the windows. At the rear, the LED pilot lights communicated by a black stripe and a voluminous gate stand out. The bumper, how could it be otherwise, has a robust appearance.

Test Peugeot 2008 rear profile

Oh by the way, the two exhaust outlets are real, although they have chrome trim that enhances them. It would not be bad if other brands took example. If you're wondering about the color of this test unit, it's called OrangeFusion and the truth is that it makes him very striking. Now let's see the cabin.

You won't find a similar interior outside of the lion mark

You will most likely get used to its i-Cockpit

The interior is a complete revolution, but history reminds us that not all revolutions are good. Let's go by parts. We are in a Peugeot, and that means we have a driving position different from normal, the famous iCockpit. Raised instrument panel with digital screen and small steering wheel to see the information above.

Peugeot 2008 i-Cockpit

This position of the elements has given much to talk about in each Peugeot launch because does not fit 100% of drivers well. We have to take the steering wheel lower than usual to be able to see the whole picture. Of course, there are many people and fellow journalists who say they feel comfortable in this way. In my case, and although I end up getting used to it, I go a bit forced.

Besides that the steering wheel is small, it is flat both at the bottom and at the top to gain a little vision. On the road there is no problem, but when maneuvering while stationary or when wandering around it is not all that comfortable because we find ourselves with very constantly changing surfaces. But well, as I say, there will be people who totally adapt to it.

Leaving this aside, in the central area of the dashboard we are greeted by the 10 inch touch screen. I like that this screen and that the entire center console is oriented towards the driver and also in a fairly high position; but there are aspects that can be improved.

A flashy and attractive interior, but not the best option

Test Peugeot 2008 center console

The first to note is that the climate control is integrated, so we don't have physical knobs to adjust temperature or fan speed. Second, we have some touch keys to quickly access the different menus (climate control, audio, navigation, vehicle settings, telephone, etc.).

The problem is that, in addition to being tactile and not physical, they are in a position that does not allow us to easily recognize the icon. You have to focus your attention, look, and then hit your finger to reach a submenu and then make adjustments using the touch screen.

Aesthetically it is very striking and attractive, that is undeniable; but functionally I think it's a step backwards. Manufacturers invest millions of euros in security and then do things like that... It seems to me a mistake, honestly.

Where I have practically no complaints is in the quality. It is true that there is a lot of Piano Black on the center console that, as you can see in the images, is impossible to keep clean. But also it is fair to say that the dashboard materials are very good, although there are creaks when pressing on floating elements such as the upper part of the box and the central screen.

Place mobile Peugeot 2008

In addition, we have ambient lights, good holes to leave objects and a cover on the console that allows us place the mobile horizontally and vertically to use as a browser in case our unit doesn't carry it. It has a sticky surface so it doesn't move, although if we take a sharp turn it can be thrown, as has happened to us a couple of times during the test.

Lots of space in the rear seats and also in the trunk

As I mentioned at the beginning, the Peugeot 2008 has grown a lot on the outside, which clearly affects the interior. The rear seats are very suitable for two tall adults.. We have good space for the knees with a slit in the backrest for people of greater stature, not having a problem to place the feet comfortably.

Test Peugeot 2008 rear seats

Vertically, the headroom is good, although it is true that the shape of the body makes our head close to the roof in the part closest to the door. This means that if they travel three people behind here will be somewhat boxed in. Anyway, it is logical and usual in the B SUV segment.

To top it off with this second row of seats, there are no central air vents but there are magazine pouches and a couple of USB sockets, which always come in handy. To ask for something else, it would not have been bad to have a central armrest or with regulation on the sidewalk; but it's not really important either.

Another of the strengths of this model is its load capacity. The trunk has 434 liters, which is more than many of its rivals and is placed in the top positions in the category. The upholstery is good, the floor can be placed in two heights and the loading mouth is wide. Of course, as in most crossovers, the chest is good because of the distance between the ground and the tray, and not in depth to the backs of the seats.

Peugeot 2008: available engines and new Peugeot e-2008

If we turn to the engines section, the offer of the Peugeot 2008 is varied and according to the needs of potential customers of this model. First of all I wanted to highlight the new electric version, the Peugeot e-2008, which has 136 hp and 300 kilometers of range thanks to its 50 kWh battery.

Among the conventional versions we come across three versions of gasoline and two diesel. the engine of gasoline is the 1.2 PureTech, which is a three-cylinder turbo available in both 100 hp and 130 versions. The least powerful is always manual, while the 130 can be manual or automatic.

Similarly, in the diesel We can only choose the 1.5 BlueHDi four-cylinder block, which is offered with versions of 110 and 130 hp. The 110 hp variant always goes with a six-speed manual transmission, while the higher one is necessarily linked to the EAT8 automatic.

At the wheel: With details to improve, but nothing worrying

Sufficient engine for the Peugeot 2008, but somewhat rough

Test Peugeot 2008 gasoline engine 130

We put the theory aside and started the car. This unit mounts the 1.2 PureTech 130 engine with manual gearbox. To put you a little more in the situation, it is a turbocharged three-cylinder that develops 130 hp at 5.500 rpm and a maximum torque of 230 Nm from 1.750 rpm. The approved mixed consumption is 5,6 liters, although we will be above it almost always. In its technical file it ensures a 0 to 100 km/h in 8,9 seconds.

She is probably the ideal mechanic for this car in many ways. It has plenty of oomph for the city and more than decent for the highway, and it doesn't spend too much. Very recently I tested the Peugeot 208, the 100 hp version of this same engine block. I liked the feel and behavior of the 208 better because it had less noise and vibration, as well as a smoother delivery.

In this 2008 unit with 130 hp, more thrust is noted from 2.300 laps, but it seems rougher and lazier at low revs, also noticing more roughness.

Test Peugeot 2008 front profile

Perhaps it is a matter of this test unit, but if we want to go up a gear quickly, it gives some jerks when releasing the clutch pedal. Shifting very smoothly and without the engine revving very high doesn't happen, but it's not pleasant to notice those jerks when we use the change in an overtaking or incorporation, for example.

In its favour, the feel of the gear lever is better resolved than in the aforementioned 208 previously tested. Although the routes are somewhat long to my liking, it does not have that rubbery and imprecise touch, which is appreciated. In any case, surely the automatic transmission provides better driving comfort.

And other details to polish

Once underway, on the road, the suspension has a slight tare firm, something common in this B-SUV segment. This makes it better maintain inertia in curves, but it is a bit drier than a car when going through sharp potholes. In any case, I do not consider it uncomfortable at all, really.

Test Peugeot 2008 rear

Where it could improve is on the issue of aerodynamic insulation. I expected it to be better achieved in this regard, since at 120 km/h it is noticeable more than desired. That noise is not a good companion for a long trip, although it can always be camouflaged with the radio or your favorite music.

And regarding the direction, beyond what was discussed several paragraphs before on the subject of the posture behind the wheel, the truth is that it is direct and fast, something that its tiny steering wheel helps. The assistance will depend on the selected driving mode, which as usual we have a selector to choose between Eco, Normal and Sport.

Peugeot 2008 consumption, very tight

To finish, let's talk about best before date. At the end of the test, the computer reflected a data of 6,8 liters, having made a combined use in all kinds of situations. Walking the streets it rises to approximately 7 and a half, while on the motorway at 120 it usually marks about 6 l/100 km. Taking into account that it is an SUV, that we have a gasoline engine and that I have driven with some joy for a good part of the test, I think these are pretty good data. It will not be difficult to lower the average to approximately 6,4 liters.

Wrapping Up

Test Peugeot 2008 lateral

And we are going to finish this test of the Peugeot 2008. Prices? The model starts in its access version at 21.148 euros depending on the configurator. Of course, it is a variant of 100 hp and little equipped. If we want this "sports" aesthetic of the GT we go up to the 27.500 Euros but we also take the 130 hp engine.

My opinion is that dynamically it has some aspects to improve and that the infotainment system and its management do not have the most recommended configuration. However, the aesthetic is very striking and all those family and friends who have seen it have liked it. After all, today cars are sold for aesthetics and not for behavior.

Regarding safety equipment, logically the usual assistants are not lacking, although depending on the termination and some being optional. To name a few, we can have adaptive cruise control and limiter, blind spot control, lane departure warning, lane keeping, automatic emergency braking, among others.
