A few months ago we brought you the proof with all the sensations that Opel's new compact SUV conveyed to us, the Opel Grandland X. On that occasion, the tested unit corresponded to the Excellence trim level, along with the 1.2 Turbo petrol three-cylinder engine and 130 hp. The firm now belonging to PSA wanted us to be in the international presentation of a new engine and a new finish; presentation that has been developed between Bilbao and San Sebastián.
The Opel Grandland X receives the new 2-litre diesel engine with 177 hp. It is a tetracylindrical never used before in the Opel brand, but it has been in PSA for a few years, being used, for example, in the Peugeot 308 and 3008, in which it declares 180 CV. On the other hand, the Ultimate finish of the Opel Grandland X It is positioned as the top of the range within the compact SUV. The Ultimate is available with both the 1.2hp 130 engine and this recent 177hp addition.
We already know very well all the details and aesthetic features of the Grandland X, as well as its habitability and load capacity, so we are going to go directly to the "crux of the matter". But first, yes, I must admit that the unit tested in this presentation It has left me somewhat better sensations in terms of quality interior regarding the unit of the in-depth test that we brought you a few months ago but, on the other hand, to my way of seeing it, is still one step below the Peugeot 3008.
Ultimate finish for the Opel Grandland X
I'll start by telling you all about this new Ultimate finish that the Grandland X receives. As I mentioned a few paragraphs above, the Ultimate is available both with the 1.2 hp 130 petrol engine and with the new 2.0 177 diesel -in a few months it will also be available with the new 1.5 130 diesel CV-, also positioning itself as the top-of-the-range finish within this model. Of course, logically it also means that it is the most expensive of all.
How much does the Opel Grandland X Ultimate cost? The price starting for the 1.2 petrol with this trim level is 32.580 euros without any discount or promotion. The 177 hp diesel variant announces a rate of 38.300 euros, also without counting possible discounts or promotional rates. Before anyone complains or comments on its price, we should review the standard equipment that includes this trim level.

Engine 2.0 Diesel 177 CV Auto 8v
The new engine available in the Opel Grandland X, although at the moment only in the Ultimate finish that we presented to you earlier, is a 2 liter turbo diesel of PSA origin which is necessarily associated with a converter-type automatic gearbox with 8 preset speeds. Has SCR filter to reduce emissions as much as possible, something that even allows it to meet the Euro 6d regulations.
Develop your maximum power 177 CV at a speed of 3.750 rpm, while the maximum available torque reaches about 2.000 revolutions of the crankshaft, amounting to 400 Nm. This energy allows it to accelerate up to 214 km/h and go from 0 to 100 in just 9,1 seconds. The approved mixed consumption is 4,9 liters per 100 kilometers traveled.
That is pure theory, but now to touch on what sensations this propulsion system associated with the Opel Grandland X has transmitted to us in our routes made between Bilbao and San Sebastian during his international presentation to the press; where we mainly combine several tens of kilometers by highway and motorway, also driving a lot on fun two-way roads. The tours on urban roads were very short.
We pick up the cars at Bilbao airport and leave for Gexto. From there we would head to Zumaia, continuing later to San Sebastián. About 140 kilometers of route according to the roadbook prepared by Opel. Leaving the airport the 2 liter diesel engine it was cold, letting itself be noticed at idle Once the engine warms up, its noise is reduced, although it continues to reach the passenger compartment during acceleration phases, especially when we exceed approximately 2.800 rpm.
I really liked the coordination between this 2.0 diesel engine and the converter type gearbox with 8 speeds. It is true, there are other mechanics that work better, but the balance in this case is very good. When starting from a standstill, it does so smoothly and paying attention to our needs that we demand with the right pedal, not having been abrupt on any occasion.
For its part, the gear changes will not be the fastest on the market, but I cannot consider them slow either, taking into account the approach of this vehicle. Usually responds well and effectively according to our acceleration requirements with the pedal, just as it does when we manage the transmission with the sequential mode. Of course, it seems to me a delay that the most powerful engine and the highest finish does not have, even as an option, steering wheel paddles; Well, we have to manage the manual mode with the lever itself.
Both on ratty coastal roads and on the highway, we were able to test the power delivery of the engine. As we have already said, it declares 177 hp and 400 Nm, so its power delivery will be more than enough for the vast majority of customers in this C-SUV segment. Despite the fact that the maximum torque is offered from 2.000 rpm, from about 1.700 laps we already begin to notice a very forceful thrust, which reaches its maximum at those 2.000 revolutions to remain constant until about 4.000 rpm, at which point it begins to slacken .
With those 400 Nm of torque, it guarantees us solvent recoveries, as long as we are not running in seventh or eighth speed, which have very long developments to reduce consumption. In any case, the automatic gearbox will lower the necessary gears to leave the rotational speed at an optimal speed, obtaining a good response.
We cannot speak in a very “real” way about the consumptions, since we did the routes with two drivers per car (changing drivers halfway), the units still had very little running in and the type of driving sometimes sought maximum performance to check the operation of the gearbox and the engine itself . However, having restarted it at the beginning of the test, we were surprised that at the end of the journey it was only 7,5 l/100 km. And I say only, because for many kilometers the driving was demanding and through a very twisty section. It would not surprise me at all if in normal conditions it was around 6 or 6,5 litres.
