Test Opel Crossland 1.5 diesel 110 CV GS Line (with video)

Vauxhall Crossland front

Back in 2017, Opel launched a new urban model with a crossover look. It was the Opel Crossland X , a car that aimed to compete for top sales against rivals like the Peugeot 2008 and Citroën C3 . However, it was only in 2021 that it received a facelift, which also included a name change, dropping the final X.

Today's test drive will feature the Crossland diesel with 110 hp and a six-speed manual transmission. The Crossland also offers diesel engines with a 120 hp automatic transmission, and gasoline engines with a 110 hp manual transmission and a 130 hp automatic transmission.

Simple but modernized design

The new Crossland has received a small update to its exterior design, which mainly features a rejuvenated front end that resembles that of its siblings, the Opel Mokka or Grandland.

At the front , it features a new full LED headlight assembly connected by a gloss black grille. The bumper has inserts that resemble air intakes on the sides, giving it a sportier look, and silver trim for a more rugged appearance.

Moving to the side , a subtle curved crease stands out along the doors, and the black roof provides greater contrast. Around the C-pillar, there's an attempt to create a coupé-like appearance, which is easily demonstrable. Additionally, the GS Line trim features 16-inch black alloy wheels.

Moving to the rear , we see taillights that, unfortunately, aren't full LED . This light cluster, like the ones at the front, is connected by a black strip. Finally, we can see silver trim pieces once again, giving it a crossover look.

Very Opel-esque interior

Moving on to the interior of the Opel Crossland , there aren't any major changes in this facelift. The quality is acceptable; hard plastic is the most common, although the dashboard does have some soft-touch material, which is always appreciated for a better feel. At least there are no creaks , despite the car being very basic in this respect.

In terms of technology , there isn't much to highlight in this Crossland. It still has an analog instrument cluster with a small central screen, although the 8-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration is a notable feature, albeit not wirelessly.

Something I think could be improved is its instrument panel , since it uses the same one for both the petrol and diesel versions. If we look closely, we can see that it goes up to 8.000 rpm, although in this diesel engine there is a redline at 5.000 rpm indicating the engine cut-off.

One detail that didn't quite convince me is that it has a traditional climate control system ; there's no way to control the temperature. It's a bit of a drawback, as finding the ideal temperature becomes considerably more difficult.

Opel Crossland GS Line front seats

As for the seats, they're arguably the best feature of the car's interior. They're incredibly comfortable and have height adjustment for the calves, as well as seat cushion extension—a welcome feature for tall people like myself. It's also worth mentioning that these seats are AGR certified, which is essentially a certification awarded by an organization of postural medicine specialists.

Fair rear seats for tall people

Moving to the second row of seats, the Crossland offers good space for people of average height. However, for tall people like myself (I'm 1,94 meters tall), legroom is a bit tight even with the driver's seat adjusted to my height. Aside from that, the rear seats are practically as comfortable as the front ones, with good cushioning.

Unfortunately, we didn't find any air vents, USB ports, or central armrests. The latter would make for a more comfortable seat, but its width makes it less practical.

A ten to the trunk of the Opel Crossland

Opel Crossland Trunk

Where this model truly shines is in its trunk. It boasts a capacity of no less than 410 liters , a surprising figure considering it's a B-segment car. The loading aperture is good, but the floor is quite low, which might be a problem for some when loading heavy items.

In addition, we have a small false bottom where we will find the spare wheel and some gaps to leave small objects, mainly those we use in case of emergency.

At the wheel of the 110 hp diesel Crossland

Vauxhall Crossland exterior

If we get behind the wheel of the Opel Crossland , we have to point out that it's a model designed to get you from point A to point B. It's an engine that doesn't offer much speed, but it does have power, something that becomes noticeably apparent on inclines.

As for its engine, the 110 hp diesel moves the Crossland with ease. It's true that, as I mentioned earlier, it's not a car that offers spectacular acceleration, but its 250 Nm of torque from very low revs means it has power practically at any time or in any situation. It goes from 0 to 100 km/h in 10,8 seconds, and its weight is 1289 kg, figures in line with its engine and weight.

The 6-ratio gearbox can be improved in a specific detail. The main reason I say this is because it has a very long distance between gear and gear, you have to move your arm too much and it also doesn't have a very good feel.

It should be mentioned that this diesel mechanic carries AdBlue

Steering, suspension and soundproofing

The steering is unsurprising; it's very light, offers little feedback, and isn't very direct. This is common in cars of this category, as it also makes for more comfortable city driving.

As for the suspension , the Crossland handles road imperfections well. It's neither too stiff nor too soft; it has the perfect balance, avoiding excessive body roll and harshness.

Finally, regarding soundproofing , it is generally good, although I would miss better insulation if we are going to make journeys on the motorway, since aerodynamic noise noticeably seeps into the cabin.

Opel Crossland diesel consumption

Vauxhall Crossland GS Line Diesel Engine

When it comes to fuel consumption, this is where the Crossland diesel truly shines. In combined driving conditions throughout the week-long test, the average consumption was 5,2 liters per 100 kilometers, a truly excellent figure for both city and highway driving.

On the other hand, at legal speeds on the highway I have managed to get consumption of 4,2 liters per 100 km , surprising for the design it has, I expected higher consumption.

Conclusions of the Opel Crossland

Opel Crossland GS Line

To conclude the Crossland test , let's talk about the conclusions I've drawn after a week of driving. Overall, I think it's an interesting car for primarily urban use, although it's perfectly capable of longer journeys thanks to its comfortable ride. However, it's best not to carry too much weight, as the power might be insufficient.

What bothered me was the rear passenger space , which is quite tight for tall people, perhaps because they wanted to make the most of the car's generous trunk capacity. On the other hand, it doesn't have much technology , which might deter some from choosing this model.

In conclusion, I think it's a perfect car for getting from point A to point B , since ultimately, it's not a model that excels in many areas, but it doesn't fall short in any either. Really, the most noteworthy aspect of this Crossland is its excellent value for money.
