The increase in demand for SUV vehicles does not seem to end. Currently, SUVs and crossovers take about 25% of sales in our country, being the C-SUV segment, that of compact SUVs, the most sold with a market share of approximately 15%. Within this segment, without a doubt, the king is the Nissan Qashqai; protagonist model of this test that we bring you today.
Nissan's SUV has been on the market for a decade, being the model who made this category fashionable. A few years ago it launched its second generation, which, in 2017, has been renewed with a restyling that slightly varies its aesthetics but, above all, improves its rolling quality, its ride comfort and its perceived quality in every sense. Today we bring you the Nissan Qashqai test with 1.5 hp 110 diesel engine and one of the highest finishes, the Tekna.
El Nissan Qashqai It is the best-selling SUV in our country with a lot of difference compared to the rest of the competitors. The Japanese has enrolled almost 26.000 units in the first eleven months of 2017 (from January to November), or what is the same, about 8.000 units more than its immediate rival. At this point, no one in his right mind can doubt the commercial success of the Qashqai, a vehicle that got the Japanese firm out of a very complicated situation.
Without great aesthetic variations, although appreciable
As we said, this model belongs to the segment of the compact SUVs. The exterior measurements of the Nissan Qashqai are 4,39 meters long, 1,81 wide and 1,59 meters high. To these data we must add a battle of 2,65 meters, which will be in charge of granting more or less space for the legs in the rear seats and also of providing a good poise to the vehicle on fast roads.
Aesthetically there are no big changes Regarding its predecessor, let us remember that it is a restyling and not a totally new model. The vast majority of variations are found in the front, appearing the new main grille with that characteristic chrome “V”, a new bumper, the hood with more marked tension lines, a new design for the fog lights and some LED headlights that can now adapt their lighting when cornering to improve safety, that is, they are directional.
And in the rear part they have practically only replaced the previous bumper with a more robust one and the pilot lights. The latter are LED and, although they maintain the main design of the predecessor model, they now have a greater volume, which gives them a more distinctive character. And little more to add, apart from two new body colors (Vivid Blue and Chestnut Bronze), in this field of the exterior design of the Nissan Qashqai; So let's go to the cockpit.
Spacious for 4 adults, although the trunk is not the best
La indoor habitability of this model remains identical to that of the previous version, so we are still facing a spacious car. The front seats are quite loose and both the driver and his passenger enjoy a fairly spacious interior in all senses, following the usual rule of products in this category.
Regarding the rear seats, two occupants can travel very comfortably back here. It is not one of the most spacious cars in its second row, although this does not mean that people of 1,80 are going to feel overwhelmed. The worst dimension is that of height, since the large panoramic roof lowers the height a few centimeters and the highest may rub against the hair on the ceiling. However, I, who measure approximately 1,76, have about three or four fingers of margin to rub with the head.
Space for legs is correct, having plenty of room in relation to the back of the driver's seat -which is placed in my driving position-. A fifth occupant can see something "tight", because if your height is medium you can rub your head on the ceiling. In addition, and as usual in this C-SUV segment, the width is not good for three adults to make a long trip in these rear seats. What we do miss a bit is the absence of regulation of the backrest and longitudinal adjustment of the bench, which would allow to modulate a little more the interior space and the load capacity of the trunk. Let's go with the trunk.
El Nissan Qashqai's trunk has a cargo volume of 430 liters. It is more or less in the category average, although it is true that direct rivals such as the Seat Ateca are significantly ahead of it. In the Qashqai we have a double-height floor and the possibility of separating the cargo space to, for example, better distribute objects or prevent them from moving too much while driving. folding down the second row of seats we obtain a load capacity of almost 1.600 liters.
Inside, practically only the steering wheel changes.
And regarding the interior design, the changes of this restyling are not too deep. The most notable is that of steering wheel, which is now sportier visually and that presents a flat area in its lower part. In any case, the handling of its buttons is simple and it takes us a little while to get used to its location. An attractive element is the large panoramic roof that, despite not being able to open, provides great light and a feeling of space to the passenger compartment.
The Japanese brand has also made some seat modifications in order to provide greater comfort and, in turn, greater lateral support. For the rest, it is difficult to find changes from one model to another. It is true that the brand has updated its infotainment system, but in our opinion, it still has a inferior quality compared to much of the competition and, on the other hand, the screen does not allow good visibility when the sun's rays hit it.
Regarding the visible materials used in most of the interior of the Nissan Qashqai, we find soft plastics in the upper area and others that are harder and have a worse touch in the middle and lower part of the dashboard. The touch can be improved (although now it is better than before), but it is also fair to recognize that the fits are good and the feeling they give is that they will hold up well the passing of the years.
Nissan Qashqai range: Engines, transmissions, drives and equipment
La mechanical offer Nissan Qashqai has not received changes, so we can still choose between four versions. In gasoline we have the small 1.2 DIG-T with 115 hp and the 1.6 also supercharged with 163 hp. In diesel It is offered with the 1.5 hp 110 dCi -the one used by this test unit- and the 1.6 hp 130 dCi.
Going to gearboxes and transmissions, it depends on each mechanical version. Gasoline engines will always be front-wheel drive, and the 1.2 can also be automatic. Meanwhile, in the diesel range, the 1.5 dCi will always be manual and front, while the 1.6 hp 130 may be manual or automatic, but never combine an automatic gearbox with 4×4 drive.
As for trim levels, the Nissan Qashqai is available with 5 finishes, these being, in order from least to most equipment: Visia, Acenta, N-Connecta, Tekna and Tekna+. The detailed equipment of each one of them you have a few paragraphs below.
1.5 110 hp manual 4×2 engine
As we said above, the tested unit uses the 1.5 dCi engine with 110 hp. The maximum power of this mechanics of Renault origin reaches 4.000 rpm, while its maximum torque of 260 Nm is available between 1.750 and 2.500 rpm. This 8-valve four-cylinder, common rail direct injection and variable geometry turbo homologates a mixed consumption of 3,8 liters every 100 kilometers. Regarding its benefits, the data speak of a 0 to 100 in 11,9 seconds and a maximum speed of 182 km/h.
Dynamic behavior of the Nissan Qashqai
Nissan declared during the commercial launch of this restyling that they had worked hard on improve ride quality of the Nissan Qashqai, reducing the noise and vibrations that could reach the passenger compartment, but also recalibrating suspension tuning to improve ride comfort without compromising the model's cornering stability.
The most important improvements are not seen, but they are felt
It had been several years since he had tried the Nissan Qashqai, and the truth is that the improvements have seemed remarkable. Inside you appreciate less noise exterior and engine, and we remember that we are facing a diesel block, which is always noisier than a gasoline mechanic. It is also isolated from the noise of rolling despite mounting sports tires -Michelin Pilot Sport 4-, which have great grip but do not stand out for being especially quiet.
The sensations that this SUV transmits to us are very good. It is comfortable and with good poise to make trips on the highway, it is relatively agile in curved areas despite the fact that its direction transmits very few sensations and it is not one of the most direct and precise within the segment. Passing over irregularities -and "down guards"- filter correctly (even with 19-inch wheels and low-profile tires). The body does not tilt excessively, although it is noticeable if we do a fairly demanding driving.
On the other hand, we have had to check if we were really dealing with the 110 CV engine, since the response to medium and high regimen is energetic and it seemed to us that we were facing a more powerful version. It pushes hard from about 1.800 rpm to 4.500. Yes indeed, below those 1.800 laps it is lazy and forces us to lower a gear if the engine falls below that speed. Unless we are going to circulate a lot with a load, this mechanics will be sufficient for normal use of the vehicle.
Consumption Nissan Qashqai 1.5 dCi 110 CV
And what about the consumption of the Nissan Qashqai? well it is the section that has impressed us the most. During our test we have normally moved very close to 5 liters on average. In normal driving, on the highway at 120 km/h, we will obtain records of between 4,9 and 5,2 l/100 km; on secondary roads without unevenness it is feasible to be around 4,5, while in the city it is easy to be below 6 liters. A very low consumption for a car like this. Our final average, after 800 kilometers traveled, has been 5,1 l/100 km.
Nissan Qashqai Conclusions
Despite the fact that this restyling does not change much the aesthetics of the Nissan Qashqai, the “non-visible” changes that the brand spoke to us about months ago are more than remarkable. The access diesel engine suffices to move this compact all-way with ease and, in addition, spend very little. It is a comfortable and easy car to drive, with smooth and safe reactions. As points for improvement, it is true that its interior could be more visually achieved, and also that its infotainment system should have improved more.
As a whole, the Qashqai is a very round car, so it is not surprising that it is the best-selling SUV in our country by far. In safety matter, as you will see below in the equipment, some improvements appear. The predecessor model already had automatic emergency braking, traffic sign recognition, fatigue detector, lane departure warning, 360-degree camera, blind spot control and some more functions, to which the automatic braking pedestrian detection and rear cross traffic alert.
If you are thinking of buying it in a few months you should know that in June you will receive the ProPilot active safety system. Among other functions, it will add to everything mentioned in the previous paragraph the lane maintenance system (action on the direction to avoid departure in addition to the acoustic alarm), adaptive cruise control and the traffic jam driving assistant (for automatic) that controls the direction, the accelerator and the brake to follow the trajectory of the vehicle that precedes us at low speed.
