Rescuing a name from the past can be a fatal mistake. The comparisons were never good, and the second parts worse. The Japanese brand Mitsubishi has reviewed past chapters of its history to rescue from these pages a name that was associated with sportsmanship and coupé bodies, Eclipse. A surname that they have used for a totally different model. You are about to get on the brand's new SUV in the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross test. An SUV that is out of the ordinary and that we know thanks to Red Mobile, Mitsubishi dealer in Badajoz.
At the end of the eighties, the Japanese brand presented the Eclipse. It was a coupé that rivaled other well-known models of the last century such as the Toyota Celica. It was sold in several regions, being remembered by many for the role it had in the first installment of the saga. gas togo. But times change, and the SUV dominates the market. Mitsubishi knows about off-roaders and has been struggling in the off-road segments for a few years. Its new SUV, the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross, arrives full of energy to offer the buyer a clear alternative to the Nissan Qashqai, Seat Ateca or Peugeot 3008. Can you handle them?
SUV design with coupé touches
The new rival of Seat Ateca and company is bigger than it seems. His body leaves us some measures of 4,405 m. in length, 1,805 m. wide and 1,685 m. Tall. It has a wheelbase of 2,67 m. and a ground clearance of 18,3 cm. With this wrap the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross sits just above the ASX without bothering the Outlander. It is slightly longer than the ASX but long enough to position itself ahead of it. Later, in the new generation of the ASX, this difference will be widened, leaving more space between the two models.
The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross puts aesthetics as one of its keys. The brand wants one of the main reasons why the customer comes to the dealership to see it because of the line of design Whats Next. At first, the dress of this Japanese SUV is similar to that of the rest of its competitors. It has a generously sized front part that in this case resorts to some large pilots with sharp shapes. The size of the fog lights gives it even more muscle, a force that is also generated by the ribs on the hood. The chrome complete an elegant and adventurous picture, with black tones looking for a sporty side to finish off.
Things seem to go off script when we get to the profile. The new model of the Tokyo-based brand shows notable aesthetic differences with respect to the competition. Yes, it has a high waistline. And yes, it also has protections in the lower areas and good-sized wheels that in this unit reach 18 inches. But, in this case, the roof line falls less drastically, with a sportier touch and coupe look. A design resource that might be the only feature that ties it to its Eclipse ancestor.
In the rear, these lines can completely convince you or, on the contrary, make you leave the dealership. beeping. As happened with cars as well known as the Nissan Juke, with a design peculiar, you can hate or love the rear of the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross, but what you will not be able to stop doing is looking at it. The bezel is divided by the passage of the optical group. The pilots are united by this strip that wants to remind the resource that the Porsche 911 Carrera 4 or Audi A7 2018 teach but that in my opinion is closer to that of the first generation Citroën C4. It all ends with a silver-colored diffuser and more body protection.
Leap in quality for the interior
The competition facing the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross doesn't believe in friends. The battle reveals fronts in every corner and requires powerful weapons in all sections. As soon as we enter the interior of the new model of the Asian company, we realize that they have been concerned with offering a space suitable for fighting anyone. The perceived quality It is outstanding, improving in this aspect compared to other names of the house such as the ASX.
The vast majority of materials that make up the dashboard in its highest part are pleasant to the touch with a soft padding or at least not completely hard. The combination of elements in shades of silver or black chrome ensure that no corner of this space is ungraceful or more bland than necessary. In general, the distribution of the elements is orderly, with plenty of space to leave your personal belongings and with good finishing touches, even on the door panels.
La screen of the central console, as in most cases, owns the environment. Its size is 8 inches, it is directed at the driver and is centered in our field of vision. It can be controlled by touch and collects the functions of the infotainment system and vehicle settings. This screen also has buttons on the edges, though unless you're Inspector Gadget and using your snipe, the ones on the right side are too far away to reach. A problem that has an easy solution with the system touch-pad controller, a tool that we find in the transmission tunnel with which we can navigate through the system by touch.
In the driver's seat we will travel in a high position, similar to that of our SUV competitors. Although, it is true, that I would have liked the seat to have more travel in height and leave you lower. That coupé side that they want to convey to the outside cannot forget the driving position. Behind the steering wheel we find the huge automatic transmission paddles that do not follow the steering wheel and that seem to have been taken from a Lamborghini Aventador. Another element that makes this Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross different.
Very correct in spaces
Before starting we have to analyze the space offered by this new model of the Japanese brand, one of the sections that most interests the potential customer of an SUV. The SUV has been able to bite into the minivan and midsize sedans segment, leaving some household names in intensive care. The client seeks design, seeks versatility, including in this quality the space that it can offer. In the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross you will travel comfortably as long as you do not do it in the third seat of the rear rows, the one in the middle, because it is somewhat narrow. The front rows enjoy space and the rear ones also stand out for this, finding the "but" in the access to the rear seats because we find a somewhat low entrance.
El trunk of the Japanese company's SUV declares 485 liters of cubic capacity, not bad if we compare it with heavyweights in the SUV-C segment. The Nissan Qashqai, for example, stays at 430 liters, an amount close to the 456 liters of the Ford Kuga. The Seat Ateca or Skoda Karoq are better than the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross in this regard, with a trunk of 510 and 521 liters respectively.
One engine so far
The new Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross is currently sold with a single engine, the 150-liter 1.5T petrol block with 163 horsepower. It has supercharging and a maximum torque of 250 Nm available from 1.800 laps. This mechanic makes the Japanese SUV reach 100 km/h from a standstill in about 10,3 seconds, declaring a top speed of 205 km/h. Although rumors point to a diesel version for summer, this option is not confirmed.
As in the design or interior section, the Eclipse Cross has weapons to withstand the onslaught of the competition, in the mechanics it remains limited. Its rivals have rich mechanical ranges with diesel and gasoline options and alternatives that start at 115 or 120 horsepower. The Japanese bets on a single powerful engine that can be related to a manual or automatic gearbox, in addition to being able to choose between all-wheel drive or front-wheel drive. In our case we have tested this motorization associated with the continuous variator type automatic gearbox that delivers power to the front wheels.
Easy to drive, on the highway
One of the virtues of this configuration is undoubtedly the smoothness on going. In the city fight, the Eclipse Cross is a great ally. In exits we will have to deal with some "pull" of the automatic gearbox although in general it is comfortable to wear. The address has travel to maneuver, the size is still compact and the only element that makes it difficult for you to conquer the city is the rear view, with a divided moon that does not help.
With 163 horsepower available under your right foot it's not uncommon for rides to be completed with ease. The mechanics respond forcefully in overtaking with quick reactions. There is hardly any delay when it comes to delivering power, an energy that continues to travel through your body until it reaches the highest areas of the rev counter. The Eco function limits the power of the engine four-cylinder trying to be more efficient, an option that we can take activated on difficult roads without being forced to use all the power. The sound is good as long as we don't look for tickles in this heart, which will become louder as soon as we go up the laps.
SUVs have been created to tread on solid ground, and in most cases they are not suitable for intensive use off the asphalt. The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross looks adventurous, but it's really comfortable on the road. Here he plays his role and in a good way, as he stands out for his aplomb, for the feeling of security that it leaves in us and its good ride. It is not too afraid of support changes, although we must not forget that we are driving an SUV and that the rocking ends up being pronounced if we go faster than necessary. The address, for its part, is not too direct but it works correctly.
An optimal tare for the road could not be to shoot off it. In walks on roads the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross fulfills its function as long as there are no potholes. The suspensions they do not pick up smoothly the irregularities of the road and end up transmitting them to the passenger compartment. This does not mean that we cannot enjoy nature with our Japanese SUV, since its height opens the door to these adventures. Although we always have to take into account its limitations.
As we had said in the previous lines, the engine joins the automatic gearbox to make life easier in the city. The problem comes when we focus on the behavior of this transmission when driving on demanding roads. I am not very fond of the continuous variator type changes and the gear simulation that they propose. I didn't like it the first time I tried one and I don't like it now. I like that at all times there is a close relationship between man and machine, and in this case the gearbox would be the Yoko Ono of this relationship. Of course, if the sensations and fun behind the wheel are not priorities, you will not have to take these cons into account.
high consumption
With a gasoline engine of 163 horsepower we can guess that the consumptions they will not be among the virtues of the Eclipse Cross. The brand declares an average consumption of 6,6 l/100 km, with extra-urban consumption figures of 5,7 l/100 km and urban consumption of 8,2 l/100 km. In practice, as in most cases, you will be far from those numbers. In our test, the Japanese SUV has moved on average 8,7 l/100 km, with a combination of dynamic, urban and national road driving, and not always with the Eco option activated. In a journey of 200 km, the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross has remained at 7,2 l/100 km at a rigorous 100 km/h. In the city, on some occasions, it has reached 9 l/100 km.
Conclusions
The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross lands to become one of the great products of the brand. Its design makes it exclusive, its interior quality and its equipment very good compared to the competition, and its road skills make it a perfect travel companion. Pity of such a limited mechanical range and a gearbox that takes us away from the fun behind the wheel. If you don't want to follow the herd and you like to be different, here is a great alternative.

Hello good day. Is there any way to adapt trunk for spare wheel?
In Latin America, the mitsubishi eclipse cross carry a normal spare wheel.
Could the base platform on which the wheel rests be ordered as a spare part, and where?
Thank you.
All the best
