El Hyundai i10 It has just presented its new generation, the third, landing right now at the company's official dealerships. It is the smallest car of the Asian brand, belonging to the complicated A-segment. Hyundai has tried to create the best car in the category and in the following paragraphs we will try to find out if they have succeeded or not…
The first thing to note is that segment A is going through a difficult time due to the demanding European anti-pollution regulations, which penalize this type of vehicle more. That is why many brands have stopped investing in this category. Nevertheless, Hyundai has continued to work to continue offering a more than interesting utility model, the Hyundai i10.
The Hyundai i10 has a design that convinces at a glance
There is no doubt that the Hyundai i10 is a car with personality in your design. It already was in the predecessor generation, and that identity evolves in this new iteration. The highest finishes are quite striking and, in addition, customizable. Proof of this is that there is up to 21 outside combinations by colors and the possibility of offering a roof in a different colour.
Before quickly summarizing its exterior design, it is worth reviewing the external measurements of the new Hyundai i10:
Long Jump | Width | High jump | Battle |
---|---|---|---|
Long Jump | Width | High jump | Battle |
3.670 mm | 1.680 mm | 1.480 mm | 2.425 mm |
On a visual level, the new Hyundai i10 presents youthful lines with slightly aggressive features in its front. Characteristic are the lines of its headlights, the cascade-shaped grille with two circular LED spotlights that serve as daytime running lights, and the marked shapes to make room for the front fog lights. We must also mention the ribs of the hood, which are born in the bumper itself.
For its part, the side view it is the typical one of a utilitarian of the segment To that looks for the greater interior space. This translates into very short overhangs, a relatively wide wheelbase (for the total length), ample glass surface and a remarkable height. In addition, in this case we have a body with a roof and pillars in black. The wheels are 14, 15 and 16 inches, integrated into bulging wheel arches, while the i10 lettering is incorporated in the rear pillar.
La rear It is somewhat more conservative, leaving no room for a style as aggressive as on the front. The shapes are softened to convey a calmer impression and, thanks to the use of horizontal lines, if we see it from behind it feels like a wider car. On the roof there is a small spoiler while in the lower area there is a black plastic as a "diffuser". Finally, Hyundai has preferred that the exhaust outlet is not visible.
A pleasant interior and the order of the day
Meanwhile, in the cabin we can find four different finishes and four styles for the part of the dashboard in the passenger area. In this way, Hyundai seeks to have some interior customization, creating different environments to win customers based on the tastes of each one.
In any case, the design of the interior of this model is remarkable. It is a utility car, an urban model, so we cannot expect great quality details in terms of materials used. They are all hard materials, although the adjustments are more than correct and it is pleasant to the touch and to the eye.
However, the visual appearance is very successful. Look at details such as the steering wheel or the instrument panel. They are not austere at all, looking like they are from a higher level car. The icing on the cake is the screen. infotainment which, as in the case of the tested unit, he is 8 inches. In addition, it comes with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and rear camera as standard from the Klass finish, adding a browser in the Style 2C.
Habitability and trunk
One of the most remarkable aspects of the new Hyundai i10 is that it is approved for five passengers (except for the Essence trim level), while many of its rivals only offer four homologated seats. Although it is not exactly the ideal car for five, it can get us out of more than one hurry in very specific situations, where with other cars we would miss that central square.
The front seats i10 are just for two adults, as in all cars in segment A. We have the impression of going somewhat close to our companion, but it is totally logical. The good thing is that the free height to the ceiling is wide and, unless we are really tall, we will not feel overwhelmed in that sense. In any case, the driver's seat can be adjusted in height, which allows us to obtain an optimal driving position.
In the rear seats, as we said, it will be better that we travel with four occupants. To be a car of this category and that does not even reach 3,7 meters in length, they are very good. The space for the legs is correct considering its segment and, without a doubt, it stands out in its height dimension. I can think of more than one C-segment model where we are closer to hitting the ceiling than in this South Korean utility. Very well! The large glass surface also conveys a feeling of greater spaciousness, which is always appreciated.
As to trunk, we are greeted by a cargo space with a volume of 252 liters. In this sense, it offers no gain over its predecessor, but the truth is that it is more than large space considering the size of the body. Therefore, it is one of the best in this category. If we knock down the rear seats we get 1.050 liters with a surface that can be completely flat, since the boot floor can be placed at two heights.
mechanical offer
Changing the third, the new Hyundai i10 is available with two motors, both gasoline and without turbo. As access appears the 1.0 MPI 3-cylinder engine, which gives 67 hp at 5.500 rpm and 96 Nm of torque at 3.750. The most powerful is a 1.2 MPI with 4 cylinders, delivering 84 hp at 6.000 rpm and 118 Nm at 4.200.
Both come standard with a 5-speed manual gearbox, though can optionally be combined with an automatic transmission (it is actually a robotized manual transmission) with 5 gears. The traction is always to the front train and they come with a Stop and Go system for automatic stop and start.
At the wheel: Agility and solvency for the city
We have tested the Hyundai i10 during its national press launch. It has been a very brief contact, so we have not had time to get extensive impressions either. In any case, it has helped us to get a first idea of the skills of this utility.
Starting with the engine, in our case we drove an i10 with the most powerful mechanics and manual gearbox. According to its data sheet, this 1.2 hp 87 MPI accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 12,6 seconds and reaches a top speed of 171 km/h. Its combined consumption approved in WLTP is 4,5 l/100 km.
Although the declared benefits are not very large, for urban routes it is a sufficient mechanic and that goes well with the approach of the car. Of course, due to the absence of supercharging, we must be aware of its limitations when going out on the road. You have to measure well when overtaking on two-way roads or when joining a fast lane if you don't want to get a scare.
The brief tours of this presentation have taken place mainly inside Madrid. Among the streets, the Hyundai i10 has been shown very agile and easy to handle in heavy city traffic. This feeling of agility is increased by the great visibility in all directions that its bodywork offers us and a slightly elevated driving position that allows us to keep a good eye on all angles.
I was able to climb as a passenger for a few kilometers in a unit with the five-speed robotic transmission. Although I did not drive it on that journey, it shows that it is a somewhat clumsy transmission, as is usual in robotic manuals. They are somewhat abrupt when starting from a standstill and slow when moving from one gear to another, noticing some jerks and interruptions in power delivery when upshifting. Personally, and although I am in favor of dispensing with the clutch pedal in urban cars, in this case I would opt for the manual gearbox.
La manual transmission of the tested unit has somewhat long lever travel, but is still much more nice than the robotic box. In addition, the clutch pedal is quite adjustable, as is the brake pedal. Therefore, it is not a car with which you "suffer" excessively when wandering around or in prolonged retentions.
As usual, the steer axle truck It has a lot of assistance and you have to make very little effort on the steering wheel to guide the car, even in parking maneuvers. This is something quite positive, since it is not a model of sports aspirations. And speaking of parking, the reversing camera will lend us a hand in this maneuver, as will the parking sensors. It is not that the camera has an excellent definition, but it is enough.
Due to the short journeys made in this contact, the multiple stops and retentions and that we have not hit the road either, it would not be fair to quote the consumption data that has been recorded with the 10 CV Hyundai i1.2 84 MPI. Obviously, we also do not know how it behaves once we leave the city on the highway. We will try to bring a more extensive and detailed test soon in a long-term release.
Conclusions
It is said that every urban car must meet a series of requirements to succeed. Among them, it must be agile to move in urban traffic, versatile to be able to cover the daily needs of customers with solvency, spacious so as not to feel overwhelmed inside and have a compact but usable trunk, elegance to stand out from the city streets and, of course, affordable for obvious reasons.
The Hyundai i10 satisfactorily complies in these sections, although it is true that the price without promotions and discounts it is not so tight. An i10 with an 84 hp engine, manual transmission and Tecno 2C finish starts at 17.745 euros, which would remain at 14.145 euros once all discounts are applied.
But beyond the price, also there is to highlight all the technology that incorporates this model. As you can see in the lower equipment section, it does not exactly come “barefoot” both in the safety sections and in other comfort functions. Very interesting everything that this car brings considering that it belongs to the utility segment. Truly striking, no doubt.
