We get behind the wheel of the Skoda RS range, including the electric sports cars

Skoda RS test

We recently had the pleasure of accompanying Skoda in one of those cool events. And the Czech brand called us to catch up on everything its sports range, with the Skoda RS. Along the way, we took a route with them on twisty roads in the northern area and, later, we felt their performance on a closed track.

Before telling you about the entire event, it is important to highlight that RS means Rally Sport, acronyms that debuted in 1974 with the Skoda 180 RS and 200 RS rally cars. However, it would not be until 2001 when it became popular in street cars thanks to the arrival of the first Skoda Octavia RS, with a 1.8 turbo with 180 HP and specific tuning.

That car, the first Octavia RS, was the one that opened the doors to the good performance economical cars in the Skoda brand. Later the Combi version would arrive and in 2003 the spectacular Skoda Fabia RS with the 1.9 TDI engine 130 HP, a car that is inconceivable today.

Skoda Octavia RS

The Octavia has always been the great standard-bearer of the Skoda RS range, but now the Skoda Kodiaq RS, with a 2.0 TSI of 245 HP, and the electric Skoda Enyaq RS, which produces 341 HP and 460 Nm of torque with all-wheel drive, powered by an 18,3 kWh battery.

Skoda says that, so far in 2023, 25% of its cars have been sold in a sporty finish, whether RS, Sportline or Monte Carlo. Of course, it wouldn't have hurt if they had told us what percentage belongs to each termination, because the RS are probably the least in demand.

On the road with the Skoda Octavia RS 2.0 TSI 245

My favorite Skoda RS is the Octavia, undoubtedly. I like sedans for their comfort, spaciousness and design, and a powerful engine accompanied by a good set-up never hurts to have fun in curved areas from time to time. So, it is the car I chose for this first part of the event.

Skoda Octavia RS Test

We took a route along roads in the north of the Madrid community, enjoying the always fun port of La Cabrera. It is true that early in the day the day was not for too much joy, with a very fine and constant rain that left the ground wet. In fact, when accelerating hard coming out of slow corners some losses of traction could be seen.

In any case, highlights the great balance that this car offers. It is not the best sports car, but it is a great fast and family car. The first time I tried it I defined it as a Golf GTI for the whole family, and I still agree with that statement.

It is not the most agile when it comes to linking tight curves with sudden changes of support and narrow roads, but I would not consider it clumsy either. It feels more comfortable in somewhat faster turns.

Then, In normal use in the city and highway it is a very comfortable car., like any other Skoda Octavia, enjoying a comfortable suspension in the most relaxed driving modes, good insulation and great interior space.

We are going to INTA

After that first route, we set the route to National Institute of Aerospace Technology, known as INTA. There were more Skoda Octavia RSs waiting for us, several Kodiaq RSs and a few Enyaq RSs, both in normal and Coupe bodywork.

Skoda Kodiaq RS

First we got on a Skoda Kodiaq RS to take a very short offroad route. It's not that they were impressive obstacles, but we did overcome unevenness, bridge crossings and some descents with summer tires that make you see that a Kodiaq is not a pure all-terrain vehicle, but that it can face much more complicated situations than many may think. . The 245 HP, all-wheel drive and the Off Road mode that adjusts the electronics work wonders.

Later we got back behind the wheel of the Skoda Octavia RS, in this case in a Combi body, to take a couple of laps of the inner asphalt circuit. It's my first time here and I don't want to make mistakes.

In any case, once again we see that the Octavia is not the best sports car in terms of pure efficiency, with an understeering tendency and the odd extra kilo, but the approach of this car is not to be a sports car, but rather a fast car, and there it does comply.

Skoda Enyaq RS

To top it all off, we got on a Skoda Enyaq RS, doing maximum acceleration tests from a standstill with the aim of doing full emergency braking and stopping the vehicle between two specific points.

It is not easy, since From a standstill the 341 HP push very hard and accelerates very quickly. It also demonstrates great braking capacity, so much so that the most normal thing is that in this test we stop the car before the marks indicated by instinct.
