There is practically no brand that can refuse the marketing of models SUV right now. Opel had previously marketed some all-road of this size, such as the Antara, but its results were quite poor. Before the German firm was acquired by the manufacturer PSA, they had developed the car that accompanies us today, the Opel Grandland X, as both companies already had an important collaboration agreement.
Opel unveiled its Grandland X during the spring of 2017, and we even got to know it in a static display back in the month of June. This compact SUV landed on the market being a kind of unrecognized brother of the Peugeot 3008, since both share the same platform although its interior and exterior design is completely different, as is its "driving philosophy".
Sharing a platform with the 3008, it is logical that the exterior dimensions are very similar for both models. Specifically, the new German compact SUV measures 4,48 meters long, 1,86 wide and 1,61 high, in addition to a wheelbase of 2,67 meters. Both the Opel Grandland X's wheelbase and width are identical compared to the all way french.
Conservative exterior for the Opel Grandland X
Unlike the Peugeot, at Opel they have clearly opted for a much more conservative design. The Opel Grandland X will not attract as much attention or be as daring as other new products that have recently arrived in the category, offering a design line very similar to that of the rest of the lightning brand's products. This does easily recognizable as an Opel car even several tens of meters away.
In the front presides over the large grille and the brand logo, which is accompanied by those "two chrome wings". Below are the adaptive LED headlights which also display a light signature common to all Opel products. In the Opel Grandland X, as it is an SUV, the typical plastic protections are not missing dark in the lower areas of the bodywork, as well as a higher ground clearance.
If we look at it from the side, we see that we have a dual color bodywork, being the roof, the mirror housings and the pillars of Color black, providing that sensation of a floating roof that is so popular lately. A belt line and a strong rib at the bottom of the doors give it a lot of muscle and character. The multi-spoke design wheels are 18 inches.
And in the rear we have a small upper spoiler, a wide tailgate with the occasional nerve, some LED pilot lights that fit quite well -at least, to my liking- and lower plastic protections that give rise to two false exhaust outlets at the ends of the bumper. Why? I don't know, I still don't see the logic in this solution.
And it does not risk in the interior design either
The interior is not the most innovative either; following the design patterns that we have seen in other cars of the brand, like the Opel Insignia. On a visual level it is a bit simple, although this is not a negative point, but depending on the personal tastes of each one, it will be more or less successful. At the top of the dashboard we have padding materials, others appearing more rigid in the lower areas, not showing noise and adjustment failures when pressed.
Despite also having some glossy black surfaces, the sensations that it transmits at the level of finishes are good. However, there are small details that could greatly improve the perceived quality, such as the touch and hardness of the controls satellites or the roulette itself for the volume of the audio equipment. The Peugeot 3008, in this sense, is much more careful in these small details and conveys higher interior quality.
In the central console, in the upper part, we have a color touch screen which can be 7 or 8 inches. At least to us, it has seemed to us that it is located at a correct height to avoid diverting our eyes from the road, but also there is something far from our hand and forces us to sit up slightly in our seat to reach it without forcing an excessive stretch of the right arm.
Among the widest in the category
One of the most favorable sections of the Opel Grandland X is its habitability. We are before one of the most spacious cars in the segment C-SUV, or your compact SUV, whatever we want to call it. As usual in these categories, the front seats are very spacious and practically two adults of any size can travel with great space and comfort here in front. In addition, we have a somewhat elevated posture that allows us to better monitor the angles of this all road.
In the rear seats we have three quite usable seats. The two side seats are spacious in all their dimensions, so I think that four adults of 1,90 or even 2 meters tall could travel quite well in this car, with plenty of head and knee room. The central square is, logically, more uncomfortable, but not as much as in other cars of the competition; and that the backrest becomes a central armrest. In addition, they appear air vents and a USB socket. It would only be missing, to round off, that the seats had longitudinal and tilt adjustment.
And if the passenger compartment is spacious, don't think it's because they've taken away space from the trunk. The load capacity of the Opel Grandland X is 514 liters. We have a double-height floor, relatively cubic and usable shapes, a hatch to communicate with the passenger compartment and allow the loading of long and narrow objects (like skis) and folding of the rear seats simply using two handles from the trunk itself. By doing so we expand the cargo capacity to 1.652 litres. By the way, in this unit, the opening and closing of the gate is electric and can be done by passing the foot under the bumper.
Three engines and three finishes
The mechanical range of the Opel Grandland X is somewhat brief, with only three engines. On one side we have the engine 1.2 Turbocharged gasoline -the one used by our test unit-, which develops 130 CV while, in the section of diesel, we can choose between a 1.6 120 and a 2-liter 177 hp that was incorporated into the model at the end of last year. Although there is an automatic change, no variant can resort to all-wheel drive; being all of them forward.
And as for trim levels, there are also three options. Ordering from least to greatest equipment, they are called Selective, Excellence and Ultimate. The test car that has accompanied us these days is associated with the intermediate level, the Excellence, while the most equipped -Ultimate- was integrated into the range together with the 2-liter diesel engine.
1.2 hp 130 Turbo engine
The propellant that equips our test unit is developed by the French manufacturer PSA, where it is known under the name PureTech. It's a 1.2 three-cylinder with direct injection and supercharging by turbo that develops 130 hp at 5.500 revolutions and 230 Nm of torque from 1.750 revolutions per minute. It can go from 0 to 100 km/h in 11,1 seconds and reach a maximum speed of 188 km/h, approving a combined consumption of 5,1 l/100 km which, to tell the truth, is quite optimistic.
At the wheel of the Opel Grandland X
Once all of the above has been described, it is time to see how the Opel Grandland X behaves. As we mentioned before, we cannot associate it with an all-wheel drive system, something that we miss the day we went up the mountain to make the content. photographic, because the snow and the lack of winter tires made it difficult for us on a couple of occasions.
Leaving the little anecdote aside, the Opel Grandland X has a clear configuration focused on comfort. While the Peugeot 3008 provides greater driving dynamism, the Opel model has preferred to opt for a slightly softer suspension configuration -or at least it seemed so-, but without allowing excessive body lean. It is noted that extra comfort in the good absorption of potholes and, especially, when going through the bumps that populate our towns.
La steer axle truck It has a great electrical assistance and it is more geared down than in other similar models, so we have a little gut feeling. and we lose some precision. Of course, when driving on urban roads or when making slow maneuvers such as parking, it is an advantage; despite, as we say, losing driving sensations.
One detail that I would like to highlight is related to its front seats. Are quite spacious and very comfortable on fast roads, with a multitude of regulations, but lateral support is poor and when tracing curves at high speed -or on roads with multiple and sinuous curves- we miss being picked up by something else, because we move more than desired, especially if we are quite thin, as is my case.
El six-speed gearbox has long developments to favor fuel consumption and minimize the noise level of the propellant during travel. The trade-off is that we have to use gear more than usual on uphill rathole roads. The gear lever also has longer throws than we'd like.
Regarding the engine, despite being a three-cylinder, its good insulation and low vibrations that reach the passenger compartment mean that we only perceive this condition in a few driving situations and if we pay attention to it. Its operation is not explosive, being fairly smooth throughout the regimen available. If we want a high response we will have to take it above 3.000 laps, although if we abuse it the fuel consumption will rise.
During the approximately 700 kilometers of our test, the combined fuel consumption was 7,3 l/100 km. It is a record that may seem high and that is far from the one approved by the manufacturer. However, it is neither one of the best nor one of the worst in the category. And it is that, it must be taken into account that the gasoline versions, as a general rule, spend much more than the diesel engines in this type of vehicle.
Summarizing
The Opel Grandland X is not a car that attracts special attention due to its design, but that can also be a virtue, since not all consumers are looking for risky aesthetics. Its two strong points are the interior habitability and the trunk capacity, being among the most spacious in this category. In the coming years, it will have to deal with already established and experienced models such as the Nissan Qashqai, Seat Ateca, Peugeot 3008, Kia Sportage o Hyundai Tucson, among many others.
Equipment
Our unit, as we have mentioned before, uses the intermediate finish Excellence, but with a large number of optional. Among them are the Mayan Gold color, the mixed upholstery of the AGR seats, the black roof, a heated windshield, the Navi 5.0 IntelliLink system, the adaptive Full LED headlights, the Plug & Play Pack, the reversing camera and the chrome roof rails. This makes the PVP shoots up to 32.000 euros according to the configurator, but with the current campaigns it would be around 28.400 euros.

Hello,
a point, regarding the interior space, 4 adults of 1.90 comfortable cannot go,
not at all, I have had this vehicle for 2 years, and my children do not want to go after me.
Legroom is very, very low for an SUV.
Consumption must also be taken into account before buying it, it does not drop below 7.5L/100km, in any condition, shooting on slopes, with 4 occupants or simply turning on the AA, if you drive at 135km/h it goes up to 9.5L/ 100km.
Otherwise all right.
Regards,
