The already "hackneyed" phrase of "The Chinese are coming, the Chinese are coming" does not scare anyone. At the time, the world threw its hands up because it was assumed that they would put an end to the automobile sector as it was at that time. But Their plans never turned out the way they thought, until now.. Indeed, today there are already Chinese brands that are on par with fully consolidated European generalist firms. And the Omoda C5 wants to be the proof.

Most likely, the name of Omoda C5 “sounds like Chinese to you”. And it is the most normal since this car brand is young, very, very young since it was born last April of this year 2023. It is part of the Chery International company and its debut took place thanks to the merger with Jaecoo giving rise to the company (or brand) "O&J". Well, its parent company has decided to make the leap, now with guarantees of success, to Spain with the C5. Will he succeed?

The Omoda C5 sports a very attractive silhouette that follows the "Art in Motion" design philosophy

Omoda C5 3

Well, if we have to talk about aesthetics, the Omoda C5 is a really attractive SUV. According to the Chinese brand, it is based on the "Art in Motion" design philosophy, highlighting, above all, three aspects. First, there is a powerful front divided into three levels. At the top there is a pair of daytime LED optics which are joined in the center by a chrome molding that places on it, in large letters, the commercial name of the brand.

In the middle there is a large grille flanked by the main Full LED optics. The last level, the lowest, is embodied by a discreet air intake. If we go to the side view we find a coupe silhouette in which a very pronounced descending line of the roof from the "B" pillar. The lower body contour is protected with a plastic trim, there are oversized wheels and a "C" pillar with a gimmicky jog.

Finally we must review its rear as it has a really attractive style. It has a very extended rear window in which there is no lack of an attractive, and discreet, spoiler. Further down, the Full LED optics are torn (reminiscent of Lexus) and are joined in the center through a black molding that integrates the brand name. The bumper almost does not exist as it is integrated with the low line of the tailgate, although there is a sports diffuser and a pair of exhaust outlets.

Its cabin is modern and technological incorporating a high number of ADAS...

Omoda C5 5

Behind closed doors the Omoda C5 shows off a simple yet technological design. As soon as you enter, your attention is drawn to the use of straight and clean lines that create a feeling of fluidity and order. But what is going to be discussed the most is the dual high-resolution screens of 10,25 inches each. They are joined in the center without a jump between one and the other, the one located behind the wheel serving as the instrument panel and the other for management.

Depending on the brand, there will be no shortage of elaborate multicolor ambient lighting scheme or wireless charging for two smartphones. In addition, they also indicate that the C5 will include heated and ventilated sports seats with electric adjustment and a hifi sound equipment. For its part, the cargo capacity, without being record-breaking, ranges between 378 liters with the five seats in place and 1.075 liters if the seats in the second are folded down.

Finally, we must review what your active security will be like. Between the ADAS active driving aids that will mount in the standard endowment we have adaptive cruise control or forward collision warning system. Furthermore, do not forget the autonomous emergency braking system, lane departure warning, lane keep assist system and high/low beam headlights with automatic function change.

Its mechanical offer, for now, is limited to an interesting 1.6 Turbo block with 197 hp and 290 Nm...

Omoda C5 4

As for its technique, the Omoda C5 is a 4,4 meter long C-SUV, 1,83 meters wide and 1,58 meters high. It is based on Chery's T1X platform, presenting a wheelbase that reaches 2,63 meters and a weight that oscillates between 1.381 kilos and 1.610 kilos. Although it may not seem like it, this base is very versatile as it accommodates gasoline and electric versions. Even so, at the time of its commercial debut in Spain it will be limited.

Thus, it will debut with a engine 1.6 Turbo petrol and front wheel drive from the ACTECO family. It has four cylinders and yields a maximum power of 197 PS with a maximum torque of 290 Nm. For its management, the brand relies on a CVT type automatic transmission and DVVT technology. Thanks to it, it can go from 0 to 100 km/h in 7,8 seconds. For now they have not communicated maximum speed or consumption since they are in homologation...

We don't know anything about the arrival of other versions such as, for example, the electric Omoda C5. It will be then that they announce the official prices for this first model, so the wait will be relatively short. The question that arises is Will he succeed or is he late to the party? We'll see…
