A breakdown that can bring us many headaches is the mixture of oil and antifreeze or water of the cooling system. If when you go to check the levels of your car, you find a mixture of these two liquids in the expansion bottle, you can start to worry, it may not be a simple fault.
The engine has several ducts inside it. The oil circulates through some of these ducts to grease the engine and through others the antifreeze circulates, which takes care of your cooling. These liquids should not mix and if they do, it means that something has broken. Normally the leak is located in the head gasket or oil cooler. Two very different breakdowns, especially since the first is usually more difficult and expensive to repair.
How to know if there is mixture of oil and antifreeze
Black oil in the expansion tank
To recognize if mixing has occurred, you must open the expansion bottle cap and take a look. if you find one yellowish, brown, or black slimy substance, there will be no doubt that oil has gotten into the refrigeration system. However, it is not always that easy to see. It only becomes such a paste when there is a lot of oil in the antifreeze or water.
In the event that it only mixes a little, you will find some oil stains floating about the antifreeze.. So take a good look and use a flashlight to make sure if you need to. If you still can't see it clearly, use a rolled up piece of paper or a rag and tuck it in. You can then look closely for oil. Whatever you use, the important thing is that it does not leave lint, threads or any residue inside the glass.
High oil or antifreeze level
The next check that is usually done is to check the fluid levels. Two situations can occur depending on the architecture of your engine: the oil level rises or the antifreeze level rises.
- If you see that the antifreeze level has mysteriously risen, it may mean that lubricant has gotten into the cooling system. Especially if it has any oil stains or is turning into the paste that we mentioned before.
- if at check the oil level you see that there is exceeded the maximum marked on the dipstick (without you having added more), it means that the antifreeze has entered the oil passages.
The best way to be sure is to remove some of the oil until it is within the limits of the dipstick. If it goes back up on its own, that's a pretty clear sign of coolant getting in.
Note that when the two liquids are mixed, however, they usually invade both systems. These two situations are just a way of diagnosis. They do not necessarily mean that it is only one liquid that invades the ducts of the other.
What has been broken to cause the mixture of water and oil?
As we have told you, the problem is usually in the head gasket or in the oil cooler. Two breakdowns with a very large price difference, more for the number of workshop hours than for the price of the parts. Another possibility, although less frequent, is that the problem is in the cylinder head itself. Which would shoot up the price of the repair even more.
head gasket
This repair requires many hours and we will have to prepare the pocket. Lifting the cylinder head involves, at a minimum, check the cylinder head itself and fit a new set of gaskets. In addition, it is also advisable to change the screws that fix it to the block.
Problem caused by the oil cooler
Another cheaper option is that the two liquids mixed in the oil cooler. As its name suggests, it is responsible for reducing the temperature of the oil, through the antifreeze that is used to cool the engine.
It has the shape of a small radiator into which both liquids enter. Of course in separate areas, which exchange heat for the high Thermal conductivity of the metal.
Head
The problem we are facing may also be the cylinder head itself. It is not common, but this element can become cracked or deformed due to defects in its manufacture or a continuous overexertion of the engine. Although logically, this will be accompanied by the failure of the head gasket. Likewise, very old engines with frequent temperature changes can also end up with this problem.
Possible faults are:
- If the problem is that the cylinder head has cracked, it will be necessary to change it. The cost of repairs to this part may be greater than the price of putting in a new one.
- If the problem is that the butt has been deformed, perhaps it "just" needs to be rectified. Depending on the model, we can save some money, but it is a job that is done in few workshops in our country.
Whether a replacement cylinder head is to be fitted or just the old one has been repaired, the head gaskets should always be new. In addition to the screws, it is also convenient to replace them.
How do you know if it's a head gasket or oil cooler?
The normal thing is that in the workshop they carry out the pertinent checks. But if for whatever reason you want to make sure of what the problem is, there are two ways to check if you have some mechanical knowledge and some skill.
Method 1: Exclude the cooler from the circuit
Is isolate oil cooler from car cooling system. An operation consisting of:
- drain the oil and antifreeze from the car. Some jobs for which the articles can help you:
- remove the hoses that carry the antifreeze to the cooler
- connect both hoses to close the cooling circuit without the cooler. Use a short tube of the right size for the sleeves and two zip ties (very cheap items found at any hardware store). Do not forget to cover the entrance and exit of the cooler or at least join them by means of a sleeve so that nothing enters.
- Fill the engine oil again and the cooling system with distilled water. The two articles that we have mentioned before will be useful to you.
- crank the engine until it reaches operating temperature, to see if the oil rises back above the maximum level. If this does not happen, it means that it was the cooler that mixed both liquids.
Two important clarificationsFirstly, every hose you put on needs to be securely clamped, and secondly, reaching the cooler isn't always easy, so if you have to remove parts to get to it, take a good look at how it was so you can leave it the same later. In the following video you can see how it is done step by step:
Method 2: Howmo know if the cooler oil is damaged
Once you've reached the cooler, the more conventional option is to extract it and check for leaks between the two ducts. This method is the same as the previous one in terms of draining the oil and coolant, but in this case it is a question of decoupling it from the engine. For this you will only need a key of the appropriate size.
You will see that the cooler has two holes for oil and two for antifreeze. There are two main methods without special equipment, with which it is possible to check if there is a fissure that communicates both ducts:
- El First of all is put pressurized air into cooler while submerged in water. It doesn't matter which hole you make it through, you just have to be careful to cover the other hole in the same conduit well. Pushing with your hand may be enough. If you see air coming out of the other system's ducts, it means you've found the problem. Good news, considering the next candidate is the cylinder head or its gasket.
- El second is introduce distilled water through the coolant line and see if it drips out of the oil line. A much simpler method because it requires fewer elements, but it is much less fallible. That is why we do not recommend it. The crack may be very small and the fluid may not leak if extra pressure is not put on it. Remember that the lubrication system works with a certain oil pressure, which would cause it to leak through such a small hole.
As we have mentioned before, if the cooler is in good condition, the problem is most likely in the head gasket or the cylinder head itself. Put the cooler back in its place if you have removed it and take the car to the workshop, because repairing the cylinder head is complex and requires a qualified professional.
However, if you find yourself in this situation, The most reliable thing is to go to a trusted workshop as soon as possible. so that they solve the problem from the beginning there. Failure to do so can have very serious consequences for the engine.

I have a problem with a Berlingo mode 2011 hdi turbo 1.6 engine and we disassembled it integrated since I had the whole engine done... Measurements and grunt new rings and bearings also the cylinder head cover was made and it turns out that since the engine was started He drove about 50 km and the oil passed into the water forming a yellow liquid…. What could have happened? Thanks waiting for replies….
My car mixes water with oil, but at the moment I don't have money to repair it, what can I do if I'm going to keep it in storage for a long time?
I have been told that if I leave it like this it can damage the engine more
What can I do so that the engine remains stored without further damage.
Greetings.
I have a quad that leaks the oil into the antifreeze. The mixture is white. When I accelerate I see how white bubbles rise. It's a Polarid 425 magnum 4*4. Does anyone know what it could be?
I have a xsara 1900 diesel...and put oil in the antifreeze bottle, the mixture is like black. What could it be? He told me it's from the oil cooler...but I don't know...I'm waiting for answers...it's urgent!!! 🙁
saray I have the same problem with a 2007 npr truck, I get oil for the water tank. I already changed the o-ring of the oil cooling system and it continued the same. A few days ago I changed the casing of the water pump, the mechanic says that it seems that was it. we are testing it
Damn I see that they do not answer and I urgently need to know if a transmission cooler can be repaired?
Hello Patricia, well, I'll tell you that I thought it was the radiator coil and I changed it, I put it back, they cleaned the entire radiator and bought the pressure and everything, but that cream-colored cream still comes out. Let's see if someone in this way informs us what the problem will be. Good night
can the transmission oil be mixed with the antifreeze tank, my car is a 2005 chevrolet cavalier
Hello good afternoon, I have a 2008 Chevrolet Luv D Max automatic van and it overheated and the engine had to be repaired and when I thought it was already operational, it turned out that the radiator had a damaged coil. It was assembled new and it was clean and everything was fine.
what happened was that the radiator had a cream like snow but cream color and I thought that by doing all this I was going to be very good in the vehicle; Well, as a result, I continue with the cream on my back and without using the vehicle for fear of another consequence; Could you give me some guidance on this. Thank you
No, the transmission is separated from the cooling circuit, almost in all cases of oil in the radiator water it is caused by a leak from the engine head gaskets, the solution is to disassemble the engine heads and put a gasket new, if the heads have been damaged, it may be necessary to work or change for a new part, usually due to overheating, or natural wear of the joints, the work is expensive, but it is the only way to fix it. Failure to do so can have even more serious consequences.
It is the head gasket, water is passing from the cooling system to the oil chamber or pistons, it is possible that the engine heads are damaged or crooked, only a mechanic can guide you in that direction.
I get this shit from the boat tomorrow we will disassemble the cooler to see if we are lucky
everything today getting shit out of the circuits
GOOD AFTERNOON, I HAVE A PROBLEM IN MY CAR BECAUSE IN THE ANTIFREEZE TANK IT HAS LIKE A PUTTY, THE DETAIL IS THAT THEY ALREADY CHANGE THE ENGINE OIL COOLER, MY QUESTION IS ALSO SHOULD I CHANGE THE TRANSMISSION OIL COOLER, OR WHY STILL WITH OIL IN THE WATER TANK
I have a 2006 FORD escape automatic truck, which has the following problem, the transmission oil is mixed with the antifreeze and I changed the radiator, how can I know if it needs to change the oil cooler or the cylinder head gasket or both?

I have a problem, I mix the engine oil with the antifreeze in the radiator, can you guide me what could have happened, it is a 2006 hhr, 2.4 from the chevrolet, wait for a prompt response.
Why does this problem occur? It originates from a car. My car is a 2012 Aveo and I took it to the agency. I would like to know how expensive this is. Thank you very much.
I need an engine for a 95 4runner toyota, Mia got hot and I mixed the oil with the water
I have a 1994 Ford Ranger Pick Up and have mixed the transmission fluid with the Coolant. Why happens? What I need to do? Thanks.
Hello, I have a suzuki Vitara 1.9 diesel, the oil is leaking into the water, it comes out yellow or winter white. The problem is that I send the cylinder head to be brushed. the blok and cylinder head to be checked and I know Almo knows that it works and continues with the same problem, always the same, and I have not been able to solve it, it continues with the same problems.
I just took my 3 pontiac g2007 to the shop because it has transmission oil in the antifreeze tank and they tell me that it is the radiator coil that may be damaged and is affecting the gearbox and that is why it jerks
and turn on hold on the board. I'll tell you how it turned out later.
I have a 2014 cruze…suddenly oil began to flow into the water tank…until a heated hose broke…change the cylinder head gasket…the mechanic canceled the cooler…but oil continues to flow into the antifreeze reservoir…very little but it happens ... what can it be ..
I am mixing the refrigerant with the oil and at the moment it seems that it does not heat up more than necessary. My question is, can I take it without overheating it for a long time without causing a major breakdown? Urgent! Audi a3 2.0
a cehvrolet 250 6 cylinder engine, you can pass the water to the engine through the oil pump or the water pump
gracias,
He has mixed the oil with the cooling water of the Mercedes C Sport, without warning and he told me in the trusted workshop, that he is a good friend, that he has to change the part that cools the oil, that the cylinder head does not have nothing, the cost €400 including the cleaning of all the circuits
GOOD MORNING I HAVE A 2011 SKODA FABIA CAR, YESTERDAY I TRAVELED 120 KM AT A SPEED OF 100 KM SOMETIMES 120 KM X HOUR, WHEN I GOT HOME I HEARD A NOISE LIKE SOMETHING WAS RAKING TURN THE CAR OFF, WHEN I TURN IT ON AGAIN IT RAGGED MORE AND I TURNED IT OFF, CHECKING IT I REALIZED THAT THE REFRIGERANT IN THE TANK IS A LITTLE ANOTHER COLOR AND IT HAD OIL STAINS, I CHECKED THE OIL LEVEL AND IT WAS OK AND WITHOUT A TRACE OF REFRIGERANT, WHAT COULD IT BE? I AM SCARED THAT IT IS SOMETHING WITH THE ENGINE, MY VEHICLE HAS 75000 KM OF TRAVEL AND I ALWAYS CHECK IT ACCORDING TO THE MILES, IT IS OF LITTLE USE AND I AM AMAZED THAT IT HAS THIS PROBLEM
I have a 2009 International maxxforce bus, the oil goes into the coolant tank and it starts to pour out all the oil until it is empty, they have told me that it could be the oil cooler, but my doubt is that if it is possible that something is doing that there is more oil pressure and that is why the cooler broke and let the oil pass
Hi, I have a samuray truck (Toyota) which is leaking water into the oil. I lowered the camera and took it to the rectifier and they checked the plan and found it to be good. It was reassembled and the problem continues. water towards the oil chart, the camera was removed again and the oil cooler was checked and it is not perforated, where else could the water be passing towards the oil, please if someone has a solution THANK YOU.
Consult the new cylinder head was installed recently everything new rectified etc but when proceeding to place the water it goes directly to the carter we changed the gasket again and the same thing happened, consult what should I do in this case
Hello, the engine of my Honda CRV overheated due to a radiator leak, it lost coolant very quickly and I didn't notice it until it gave me a nod signal and I stopped it immediately, after it cooled down, I replaced the water and it started perfectly, So I walked without any problem a year and a half later, when I started it, it resisted starting, like low battery, and then it started and as if nothing, until I consulted a mechanic and he told me, that I mix water and oil , and now it won't start, apparently the pistons don't move, I'll have to change the cylinder head gasket, I'll have a big head, intake and exhaust and hoping that a piston or connecting rod isn't broken, I hope to God that it can turn out well,
any recommendation from experts, what happened to him the same
Hello, how are you? I have a diesel clio I checked the water tank and the lid is full of oil the oil is all stuck to it as if it were a cut paste and it is black in color and the water is also all black with oil stains like circles that end mix what can be is thanks
hello I have a volvo aq 130 b 20 gasoline engine new cylinder head new oil cooler but I still mix the water with the oil and I can't find the problem I'm a mechanic but I don't see where the fault is thanks
