The electrification of the automotive sector is slowly but surely reaching the most popular segments. The updated Dacia Spring will arrive in the coming months to demonstrate that it's possible. However, anyone wanting a conventional electric car around 4 meters long will have to look at the new Citroën Ë-C3 or Renault 5 E-Tech. This competition, however, will become even fiercer in the coming years, and the blame will lie with the future MG2. Don't you see it?
As you know, SAIC Motor wants to conquer Europe , and with MG , it seems to be succeeding. The 3 Hybrid+ and its hybrid system are proof that they're going after brands like Toyota and Renault. And when it comes to electric vehicles, the battle will likely bring us some "victims," as the Chinese are going all out. The premise is simple: launch an electric vehicle around 4 meters long with a "decent" range for under 20 euros . Volkswagen has already announced a similar model, but watch out.
The MG2 would be about 4 meters long and could complement the 3 Hybrid+ on the market…

A few days ago, as you know, the new 3 Hybrid+ made its world debut at the Geneva Motor Show, where its representatives took the opportunity to highlight its technological advancements, design, and features. At the event, several media outlets had the chance to speak with brand representatives and uncover new details about the future plans of the once-British firm. The most powerful of these is its entry-level electric model, priced at €20…
According to David Allison, MG's head of product and planning…
"I think it's an area that no one has really successfully exploited yet , because the focus has been mainly on bigger cars and those that can actually charge the amount of money people are willing to pay."
Furthermore, he added that…
"I think there's a great opportunity for someone who can get a four-meter electric vehicle for around 20.000 euros . I think someone can do that with a decent range and a decent-sized car for that price. So why not us?"
If Allison spoke with such "forcefulness," it's because SAIC and MG are up to something regarding its design or development, without giving any clues as to whether it's finished. In fact, he mentioned that…
“ Product development is clearly a long-term endeavor , but it’s not inconceivable that we could go from concept to production in just two years. It would be fantastic if we could have something like that on the market by the end of next year . It’s still a couple of years away, to be completely honest. But I don’t think it’s inconceivable. And I think if we can do it, I would really like to.”
Therefore, if we follow Allison's words, it's highly likely that MG's new 4-meter electric vehicle will be one of the models the brand has announced for the coming months …
The target price is 20 thousand euros, just below the 5 E-Tech and its rivals…

As we mentioned, MG's goal is to offer an "attractive" and "all-rounder" electric vehicle at an affordable price. To achieve this, they have reportedly set a price of around €20 . Initially, Renault loudly announced that the Renault 5 E-Tech would cost less than €25 in its most accessible version. Then Citroën arrived with the new Ë-C3, lowering the price by about €1.500, with the entry-level version starting at around €24.
And between these two brands are Dacia and Volkswagen. The former, as we've already mentioned, sells the Spring for around €20 with subsidies. Meanwhile, Volkswagen announced that the ID.2 would be at this "psychological barrier," and MG wants to "attack the market's waterline." Therefore, setting the price of the new MG2 at this limit would be a point in its favor. Especially since even at this price it would be profitable, given that it would be manufactured in China.
The technical aspects of this MG2 are precisely one of the questions being raised. One option would be to use the same platform as the MG4, albeit adapted for a shorter model. The other would be a completely new platform, but this could come at a higher cost. Therefore, we'll have to wait for news, but if everything progresses as quickly as it seems, the new electric MG2 could be with us by the end of 2025 or the beginning of 2026…
Great care…
