Video | MG ZS Hybrid 2025 test, a very interesting B-SUV with an Eco label

MG rose from the ashes at the beginning of this decade trying to become a powerful economic brand of electric vehicles, although also selling thermal vehicles. At least in Spain, they have changed that initial script a little, betting mainly on fossil fuel cars. They have not done badly at all; especially because vehicles like the MG ZS. This is your model for the segment B-SUV.

The MG ZS has had an impeccable sales success in the last two years with its gasoline versions. However, and although its price was very tempting, it is no less true that it was a vehicle with some important mechanical limitations. Now A new model has just landed with almost 200 HP, a hybrid engine, an Eco label and a more daring design.

That said, and before we go any further, it is important to mention that it still offers an interesting price. The new MG ZS Hybrid is available from 22.990 euros, which with campaigns and financing could remain at 20.500 euros. It has also grown externally and comes with better technology. Let's see.

More visual character for the MG ZS

On the outside it has many of the features seen in the also renewed MG HS, its older brother. It is a very deep restyling, which has changed quite a bit visually. The front is notable for its new headlights and bumpers, which have much more character than before and seek a greater visual sensation of width.

The side is quite similar to the previous model, but it improves our impression because you can use wheels up to 18 inches in the top trim level. The rear end has had its taillights, tailgate and bumper updated, also offering a little more character.

Dimensions and trunk

As far as measures are concerned, The 2025 MG ZS grows and reaches 4,43 meters in length, enjoying a wheelbase extended to 2,61 metres, i.e. 30 mm more than before. The width is 1,82 metres and the height 1,63.

Meanwhile The trunk remains at a volume of 443 liters According to the brand, although visually it appears a little smaller. This is because it does not use the usual VDA measurement system. According to MG, it has not been able to grow compared to the previous version simply because of the location of the batteries, which require their own space and location.

The interior of the MG ZS gains in technology and appearance

The cabin has been completely redesigned, offering a much more modern appearance than the outgoing model. This new MG ZS Hybrid+ 2025 features a 7-inch digital instrument cluster, 12,3 inch for the multimedia system and 360-degree camera. However, it does not accept Apple CarPlay and Android Auto wirelessly - it has to be wired - and it also includes the climate control module, something I do not consider appropriate.

The steering wheel is also new, with a more attractive appearance, although with certain parts finished in gloss black. However, I think it's a total mistake that the steering wheel doesn't have depth adjustment. to achieve an ideal driving position.

The centre console section is also completely new, with a large gear selector, a few storage compartments and USB sockets.

The materials chosen for the different parts that make up the dashboard, console and doors are not the best quality on the market; but I did like the fact that has good settings and that when you touch them they give a feeling of robustness and that they will withstand the years well.

A spacious and practical car

As far as space is concerned, The spaciousness of the front seats is more than adequate for adults of practically any size., although I must repeat that the driving position is limited by the lack of depth adjustment of the steering wheel. As a curiosity, the driver's seat even has electric adjustments, which is quite a surprise.

The rear seats are very good., offering good access and plenty of leg and headroom, leaving plenty of room for even four adults over 1,80m tall to travel in this car. The transmission tunnel is not too much of a nuisance, but the width will not allow long journeys with all seats occupied.

There are roof grab handles, coat hooks and a central air vent, however, we do not have lighting in this second row and neither does a central armrest.

MG ZS Hybrid Performance

This deep update of the MG ZS has a clear mechanical improvement compared to the previous one. It is only marketed with the 196 hp hybrid engine already seen in the MG3, the model from which it is derived, while the old ZS was sold with a highly undesirable 106 hp naturally aspirated engine and a three-cylinder turbo.

The hybrid mechanics are not plug-in, but self-recharging. It consists of a 1.5 petrol engine with 102 hp and an electric motor with 136 hp and 250 Nm, which is powered by a battery with 1,83 kWh capacity. For comparison, the battery in Toyota hybrids is usually about half the capacity. The gearbox is automatic with three speeds.

As for performance, the spec sheet says it does the 0 to 100 in 8,7 seconds and has an approved combined consumption of exactly 5 litres per 100 kilometres travelled. When we can test it for several days and in more extensive conditions we will see if the real figure is close to the approved figure.

At the wheel

The first thing I must say is that No one should be scared by the figure of almost 200 hp. Don't worry, it's not a rough engine or one that's going to get out of control at any time, as it's smooth and very easy to manage using the accelerator. It's progressive and easy to control.

MG ZS Hybrid Test

Less comfortable is the brake pedal, which lacks feel necessary to measure with total precision and smoothness. Mind you, it's not that the car doesn't brake, it brakes well in terms of power, but in electrified vehicles it is quite difficult for brands to achieve a natural feel, to achieve that sensitivity.

On the other hand, I must say that the test day took place under heavy rain and gusty winds, in other words, a very complicated day in terms of weather. That is why we cannot speak clearly about issues such as sound insulation, the feeling of grip when we push the limits or the sensitivity of the steering, among other things.

Yes we can say that in these first kilometers The suspension seemed to us to be correctly tuned. to overcome obstacles with relative comfort and, at the same time, not lean too much when we make sudden changes of direction and intense braking; although we should reaffirm this when we can test it calmly.

Before closing this section of the dynamics, it is important to highlight that The hybrid engine may see reduced powerThis is because the electric motor is powerful and in long intense accelerations, especially if we are loaded or on significant slopes, llega a drain all batteryAt that moment the electrical part will stop supplying power to the wheels and the gasoline engine will be in charge of moving it.
