The AMG 53 versions arrive at the Mercedes E-Class and CLS, with an electric motor

Mercedes has recently opened orders for the new Mercedes-AMG 53 versions of the E-Class, including all four body styles and the luxurious CLS coupe sedan . It appears the German brand is beginning to focus its sporty models on hybridization , as this powertrain combines a 6-cylinder engine with a small electric motor called EQ Boost.

High performance can be linked to hybridization, and the Ferrari LaFerrari is probably the best example. In the case of the Mercedes-AMG E 53 and Mercedes-AMG CLS , the electric system's power delivery isn't as noticeable—it's a 48-volt mild hybrid —but it does provide a power boost while improving fuel efficiency. I'll explain it briefly in the following lines.

The Mercedes-AMG 53's powertrain consists of a turbocharged 6-cylinder gasoline engine , complemented by an electric compressor that reduces turbo lag and, consequently, shortens response times from when the driver presses the accelerator until the car is "catapulted" forward. The engine's performance figures are 435 hp and 520 Nm of torque.

The 48-volt hybrid system's support, as we mentioned at the beginning, is provided by the EQ Boost system . This system consists of an alternator that also functions as a starter motor and can deliver an additional 22 hp and 250 Nm of torque in specific situations and for a short period, assisting the combustion engine in propelling the vehicle. This also reduces fuel consumption and emissions.

Moreover, this mild hybrid engine is necessarily associated in all five models (CLS, E-Class sedan, E-Class Estate, E-Class Coupe and E-Class Cabrio) with the AMG Speedshift TCT nine-speed automatic transmission and the AMG Performance 4Matic+ variable all-wheel drive .
