This year's Indianapolis 500 hasn't been a particularly good one for the Spanish drivers. Although Oriol wasn't competing, Fernando Alonso and Alex Palou represented Spain. Palou qualified very well thanks to his car and the Honda engine. They had everything in place for a great result, but luck wasn't on their side on this American circuit.
Fernando Alonso, for his part, arrived at Indy with the McLaren team in his third attempt to achieve the Triple Crown. But he had to leave empty-handed, delivering a rather poor performance due to the problems he encountered. From starting so far back due to a lack of pace with the Chevrolet engine to an engine failure during one of his pit stops, which the mechanics tried unsuccessfully to restart, but by then he was already a lap down on the leader. Then came his mechanical problems after losing his clutch on lap 122. A moment in which he had managed to climb from 26th to 15th…

This left him boxed in at the back and unable to recover. Although victory was difficult, the American engine had more potential in race pace than in qualifying. Therefore, they could have at least achieved a good result had they executed everything correctly. But as I said, these things happen in a race like this. Now the Triple Crown will have to wait a few years, as he is not expected to compete in 2021 or 2022 due to his commitment to Formula 1 with the Renault team. So Fernando Alonso says goodbye to IndyCar, hoping for better luck in the future…
Alex Palou , for his part, also had a strong chance. He looked very confident and competitive with his car from the start. But an accident ruined everything. Palou himself acknowledged that it was a shame, as they had a car capable of winning. Ultimately, due to the accident, he had to retire.
With Palou and Alonso withdrawing, the team finished a discreet 21st in the final result.
The final victory went to Takuma Sato , who managed to take his second victory in the Indianapolis 500, this time with the Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing team.
