Iberdrola and BP join forces to create ultra-fast charging electric stations

Electric car charging network Spain, electric charging stations

Iberdrola and BP Pulse, two energy giants, have joined forces to launch a fast charging company in Spain and Portugal. Recently, they have reached an agreement with Power Electronics Spain for the supply of latest generation ultra-fast chargers. This agreement is an important step to overcome the current barriers that prevent the definitive takeoff of the electric vehicle in both countries.

The alliance plan includes the supply of NB400 and MCS (Megabatt Charging System) chargers with powers between 400 and 1.400 kW. These chargers will be used to provide energy to passenger cars and heavy vehicles in the future hubs of the public charging network that the alliance plans to deploy throughout the Iberian Peninsula.

The alliance aims facilitate access for all citizens to fast and ultra-fast charging infrastructure. To achieve this, Iberdrola and BP Pulse have planned an investment of 1.000 million euros in the coming years. The objective is to deploy a network that should reach 5.000 public access fast and ultra-fast charging points by 2025 and 11.700 points by 2030. All of these points will be powered with certified renewable energy.

The agreement with Power Electronics Spain will allow accelerate activities in the race towards the energy transition in Spain and Portugal. In addition, it will allow the new infrastructures and hubs to be provided with “sufficient power” to facilitate the fast charging that medium and heavy industrial vehicles need, since in this area the electric charging stations are conspicuous by their absence, if we compare ourselves with other European countries, and If you want to electrify the vehicle fleet, you have to start by giving drivers guarantees just like they now have with gas stations.

This project is also in line with the objectives of the European Union, which approved in June the new regulations of the Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR). This regulation requires the installation of at least one ultra-fast charging station for electric passenger vehicles every 60 km on the roads of the Trans-European Transport Network by 2026. In addition, the charging points must have a minimum power of 400 kW, which will increase to 600 kW in 2028.
