To get an idea of where the loss of power that occurs in our car, you have to know the basic elements involved in a combustion engine. Something that is not far from complicated at the levels necessary for this article and that, if we are lucky, can save us the occasional trip to the workshop.
Understanding what can cause power loss is easy
As we all know, in the combustion chambers one is given fuel and air mixture, that after a Chemical process creates a gas explosion that moves the piston. It is good to know that this chemical process is caused by sparks from spark plugs in gasoline engines and by pressure in diesel engines. Knowing this simple process, you can deduce the necessary conditions so that there are no power losses.
These are: come enough air and/or fuel, that the elements that cause the chemical reaction to work well and in a coordinated manner the cylinder is tight so that the force does not go where it should not, instead of moving the piston. All this without losing sight of the so common electronics of modern cars, which based on sensors, actuators and other systems, can cause some displeasure.
What to rule out first with power loss
Of course, there is other elements that can make the car have less oomph, but they will not be a matter of the engine and its components. These may be undercarriage parts such as bearings, One poorly positioned brakes that play records or a cable hand brake so tight that it rubs even with the lever completely down.
All of this is easily disposable before you start looking for other problems. Just stop accelerating when we reach a certain speed on the flat and put the neutral. If any of these things slow the car down enough that you feel less thrust from the engine, it will feel even more when the car is coasting.
What can cause power loss
Now we are going to see the parts of the engine that can cause loss of power, because as we have already told you, If we are lucky and it is something that we can solve ourselves, we can save the money of taking it to the workshop.
One of the most common reasons is having a problem with the air supply. The engine does not have enough oxygen to burn the fuel and lose power. This deficiency can be for several reasons and we will detail the most frequent ones below. Of course, starting with those that can be solved without mechanical knowledge.
dirty injectors
This is one of the most common reasons for increased car consumption and loss of power. Something common in direct injection engines, such as diesel and increasingly gasoline. For example, GDI engines or the TSI of the Volkswagen group. The solution is easy and cheap when they are not severely obstructed. Just use some specific injector cleaner for the type of engine you have. They can be bought at gas stations, specialized motor shops and large-area supermarkets (Alcampo, Carrefour, El Corte Inglés...).
It is recommended to use them periodically to keep the injection system of your car in good working condition. Although it may not be necessary to do it as often as the manufacturers of these liquids indicate in the instructions that follow.
If the injectors are clogged beyond what these cleaners can fix, there is Treatments what can they do in some workshops. Although the most common is not to reach it, if you maintain your car well.
air filter
All the air that enters the engine passes through a filter to prevent the entry of impurities. I may be clogged by accumulated dirt over time or because we have traveled in areas with a very large amount of dust or smoke. If so, your engine will not "breathe" properly and will not get enough oxygen to burn the fuel, with a consequent loss of power.
Solution: You can check it yourself by opening the cover where it is housed to see if the filter is clogged. Changing the air filter is usually very cheap and you can do it yourself. You need to make sure it is the correct models for your car. We do not recommend that you opt for the cheapest.
Some people extend filter life pulling it out and tapping it against a solid surface to remove some of the dirt. You can try doing it. Although it is better to put a new one.
Some people remove the filter, making sure to be in an area with as little pollution or dust as possible in the environment, to circulate for a moment without it. If the power loss is gone, you've hit the ceiling and you can buy a new one cheaply to fix the problem. Though we advise against it, because impurities can enter the engine.
Flow meter
It is the piece in charge of measuring the air flow that reaches the engine and works together with the car's control unit. In case you mismeasure the amount of air, the problem is usually detected by the engine control unit, which starts to work in emergency mode, something that limits the power that the engine can perform.
Solution: The flowmeter is usually close from the engine air inlet where the filter is. In order to solve it, many times an allen key and a cleaner is enough to remove the impurities that cause its malfunction. In case you have to replace it, you can buy one for prices ranging from 30 to 80 euros, depending on the car you have. the turbo
If your car has turbo, it may not supply enough pressurized air to the cylinder and the engine is more lazy. If it is broken, the loss of power will be very drastic.. If your car has a variable geometry turbo (like most current diesels) and you notice that your car loses power in rev ranges where it used to perform well, the blades may have stuck. Even so, it is normal that the engine control unit detects the malfunction and, as with the failure of the flowmeter, goes into emergency mode.
turbo sensor
Again here it may be more of an electronic issue than a mechanical one. More than once, the turbo works correctly, but the sensor that measures its revolutions is the one that gives problems. This sensor indicates how fast the turbo is spinning to keep it under control.
E.g., the turbo sensor is the one that indicates at what revolutions it rotates to know when to change the geometry of its blades. It is also responsible for indicating when it reaches the maximum suitable revolutions so that it does not break down, and that they do not continue to increase. If it malfunctions, it can lead to the deterioration of the turbo or its breakage, but again the car's control unit usually detects it and enters emergency mode so as not to reach those extremes.
Fuel pump
One of the reasons why the fuel does not arrive properly, it may be a fault in the fuel pump. This allows the "dinosaur fluid" to be transferred from the tank to the engine. In the event that this mechanism fails, on many occasions an attempt is made to fix it, since a new pump has a very high cost.
As sometimes the fuel has impurities or water and in order to safeguard the injectors, the system responsible for supplying the fuel, has a series of filters with very low tolerances. If the filters become clogged, the fuel will not reach the engine and the car will stop. It depends on the manufacturer, but there are filters that have to be changed approximately every 30.000 kilometers and they cost approximately 20 euros.
Brands less likely to lose potency
As you can imagine, there is a lot difference in reliability between some brands and others. Even in breakdowns that can cause loss of engine power (which can already be something serious). A poor lubrication of the entire system or a decompression of the cylinders can also cause you to lose power. In the event of poor lubrication, the engine will have more friction, and it will have a harder time doing its job as well as suffering from premature wear of the parts... If what happens is that the cylinders suffer from decompression, this may be due to a fault in the exhaust valve or the breakage of a ring or joint.
Timing chain stretching
Although theoretically the distribution chains are designed to last a long time, there are those that end up stretching over the years. When this happens, one of the first symptoms to be detected is a metallic "clatter" when starting, which disappears within minutes. can be confused with el sound produced by the hydraulic tappets due to lack of lubrication, which is also very common at boot time, but takes less time.
When the chain stretches a little more, one notices engine power loss. Perhaps accompanied by the same noise more pronounced and lasting longer. If this failure worsens, it is normal for the warning symbol to appear. engine failure and notice a great loss of power. This fault can also cause a desynchronization between camshaft y crankshaft large enough to seriously damage the engine and render it unusable.
Stability control issues
It may seem that it has nothing to do with it, however, there are cars that if they detect a ESP system failure or ABS, limit the power of the engine.
