Motorsport is quite "discriminated" by the Olympics, it is not considered an olympic sport because it depends too much on the car and not on the athlete, that is what is most difficult for purists of Olympic sports to accept and accept. That is why there is still no such sport that is considered Olympic, however, in karting the driver is more important and not so much the kart you have, however not all are the same despite being of the same brand and same model as Fernando Alonso well knows:
«It would be good, it is an idea to consider for the future, to do something like the race of champions... But it is not a sport in which the athlete can make a difference. When you get in the car you depend on the machine, and I want to think that this will always go against what they are the Olympic Games. With karts it was the same. It is difficult for two karts to be the same. Even if you take them out of the box and they are identical, there will always be one that runs more than the other. To consider it Olympic they would have their forms, but you would always depend on the machine.»
However, the new electric karts or e-karts that the FIA has presented could improve what Alonso is talking about. One of the organizers of this new category has said: «I see very positive that these electric karts are an Olympic discipline. Its simplicity and electronics guarantee equality, which puts the athlete first. This is the first step on a long road, but I am confident that we will soon achieve the goal«.
These electric karts place all the weight of the engine and batteries behind the seat, in the rear area, so they suffer quite a bit of climbing, and are complicated when entering the curves compared to those with a fuel engine. However, they have incredible development potential and there is still a long way to go to improve both their engine and chassis, which are still very green. Cars already exceed 100 km / h and they have good autonomy, we will see how this ends, but it would be interesting to add them to Olympic sports…
