The working principle is that in the same unit, the generation of pressure is combined with the injection of diesel, unlike the common rail where the pressure is in the pipe and then the injector only decides when and how to let the fuel pass. This technology, although recent in the automotive industry, is very old and has been used in industrial vehicles for a long time.
Takes care of the drive a camshaft that determines the moment in which it should be injected, and it is this shaft that also provides the force with its movement to generate the necessary pressure to inject.
Another advantage of this type of system is that, as they are individual units, they allow better adaptation to the changing operation of the engine. They allow pressure up to 2050 bar and a preinjection, less than in the common rail.
It consists of a low pressure fuel supply, a high pressure fuel supply, and the control electronics, consisting of sensors, electronic control unit and actuators. There are also peripherals such as the turbo or exhaust gas recirculation.
The fact that everything is concentrated also implies that unit size is larger, and that's why at VW, to match the unit injector with a four-valve-per-cylinder head, they had to increase the diameter of the cylinder head, and of course, resize everything else. Thus the current 2.0 TDI was born from the old 1.9 TDI.
