The Volkswagen Group 's electrification strategy is progressing very well. Today, almost all of its brands have projects focused on this energy source. One of the most advanced is Volkswagen itself , which, with the ID family, will set the standard for the rest. The number of models that will comprise this family is not yet defined, but it will span a wide variety of segments.

The Volkswagen ID.4 is one of the key pillars. It will be the crossover version of the ID.3 and should appeal to those looking for a more versatile model. But it will go a step further, as the German automaker's development team will reinforce its strategy with a second option. For this reason, they have created the Volkswagen ID.4 Coupé (or GTX), the version with which they intend to compete against the Tesla Model Y.

The rear of the Volkswagen ID.4 Coupé is vertical and muscular

There wasn't much information available about the Volkswagen ID.4 Coupé beyond its relationship to the ID.4. The problem is that several spy photographers have caught it undergoing validation testing. In the images provided, we can see the evolution of the electric SUV's rear end , which features some differentiating elements. The curved roofline stands out, culminating in a vertical tailgate topped by a modestly sized spoiler.

The verticality of the rear end is evident , reminiscent of the BMW X4. The taillights feature LED technology and are connected in the center, following the design of the ID.3. Due to the heavy camouflage on the photographed vehicle, the height of the loading sill is not clearly visible , although it appears to be positioned close to the ground. Finally, the chrome trim pieces that replace the exhaust outlets are noteworthy.

The Volkswagen ID.4 Coupé is slated to arrive on the market in 2021. If this date holds, its unveiling should take place before the end of 2020. Little is known about the powertrain options, although they will be shared with the ID.3. Therefore, there will be versions with one or two electric motors and up to 300 hp. The batteries will be located under the passenger compartment floor and will have capacities ranging from 58 kWh to 77 kWh.
