If we talk about successful SUVs, few have won what the Renault Captur. This B-SUV has been a sales success for the French company since it arrived on the market in 2013. In a short time it began to gain followers, and in even less time it began to dominate the best-seller lists in different countries of the world. Europe, surpassing even the almighty Nissan Juke.

As much as it may seem, the first generation of the Captur did not meet many expectations. The interior of it was practically made of hard plastics, its habitability was not more than correct, and its mechanics were not extraordinary either. However, all these problems did not hide the success of its design.

In 2019, Renault presents in society the second generation of the Captur with an image almost identical to that of its predecessor. However, the change given by the French B-SUV is considerable in the rest of the sections and qualities. The new Captur is better in every way; quality, equipment, mechanics, habitability. Despite these improved qualities, in 2024 Renault will put an update on the market with profound aesthetic changes as well as important technological and mechanical innovations.

As we already said, the change of the second generation Renault Captur is considerable, and is due to a greater effort on the part of the developers and a change of platform. The current version uses the CMF-B architecture. A newly designed platform that is shared with several models in the Nissan-Renault alliance, such as the Renault Clio and its rival, the Juke.

It is customary for each new generation to grow with respect to the previous one, and the case of the new Captur is not strange. Thanks to this new base we have more generous measures: 4,22 meters long, 1,79 meters wide and 1,57 meters high. To this measure we must add a wheelbase of 2,63 meters that gives it better habitability, with a maximum capacity of five passengers.

Load capacity varies depending on the placement of a longitudinally movable rear row of seats. 422 are the minimum approved liters (326 liters for hybrids), reaching a maximum of 536 liters without the need to lower the rear bench, and 1.275 liters if we carry out this operation. A versatility rarely seen in a B-SUV and that becomes a powerful weapon for the Renault Captur.

Mechanical range and gearboxes of the Renault Captur

The new Captur is still not a particularly high-performance vehicle or one with powerful dynamics. It focuses on a comfortable and balanced behaviour, suitable for day-to-day use and for long journeys. It's the same with its mechanics. Starting in 2021, the diesel versions disappear from the range, limiting the options to gasoline, micro-hybrid, hybrid, LPG and plug-in hybrid units., although the latter disappears in 2024. All units send power to the front wheels through manual or automatic gearboxes depending on the mechanics.

By power the range starts with the Captur TCe with a three-cylinder gasoline engine and a power of 90 horsepower. Below is the only bifuel LPG version with a 999 cubic centimeter TCe engine that develops 100 horsepower. It has a 40-liter gasoline tank and a 22,5-kilogram gas tank. From there we enter the versions with the ECO label and Mild-Hybrid system, which gain prominence after the disappearance of the plug-in hybrid model.

They use a 1.333 cubic centimeter four-cylinder engine that develops 140 horsepower and 260 Nm of torque or 158 horsepower and 270 Nm of torque, depending on the variant. The most electrified model in the range is the Captur E-TECH full Hybrid, also with ECO label. It uses a four-cylinder, 1.598 cubic centimeter gasoline engine that is associated with an electric motor and a battery with a net capacity of 0,85 kWh. It offers 145 horsepower and an estimated range of five kilometers.

One of the most significant changes to the latest generation Renault Captur is found in its interior. The quality improvement is very great, as is the presentation of all the elements and gadgets on the equipment list. Thanks to this, the French B-SUV can proudly say it is one of the best equipped in the category. It has several lines of equipment: Ecolution, Techno and Esprit Alpine.

From its initial finish we see very interesting elements such as LED headlights, multifunction steering wheel, air conditioning, and a lot of safety equipment and driving assistance elements. However, that is only a small sample of what the Captur can do. If we jump to the highest finishes we see how the exterior appearance improves slightly, but especially the interior.

The highest finishes give access to a bi-color body very representative of the B-SUV segment. Inside there are typical systems from higher segments such as: keyless entry and start, sunroof, partially digital instrument panel, multimedia system with screen up to 10,4 inches, navigation, dual-zone climate control, parking camera, steering wheel heated, and the maximum possible load of driving assistants.

Safety has always been a very important aspect for Renault. They were the first to achieve the highest Euro NCAP certification, and its famous five stars. The Captur, despite its small size, has one less star than usual, four out of a possible five. in crash tests. The rating by section was as follows: 76% protection for adult passengers, 80% protection for child passengers, 76% vulnerability in the event of a collision and 69% in ADAS system performance.
