Since General Motors ceased operations in Europe and left the continent, much has changed. They are no longer among the world's leading car manufacturers, but it's also true that they aren't exactly burning through cash either. That's why Mary Barra's plan— to remain in the regions where they generated the most sales and profits— seems increasingly sound . And Latin America, despite everything, continues to be one of their most profitable regions.
So, now that Opel and Vauxhall are no longer under their umbrella, they've had to rethink their entire lineup for this region. The result of this overhaul is that almost all Chevrolet models are a little better . That's why they're loudly promoting each new model they're introducing to customers in the area. The latest is the Chevrolet Montana , a small pickup truck you might like to see around here…
The third generation of the Chevrolet Montana will no longer derive from any Opel model...
In case you didn't know, the first two iterations of the Chevrolet Montana were derived from an Opel . The chosen model was the Corsa, which General Motors sold in Mexico, Brazil, and South Africa. They modified the body design from the B-pillar back and added a cargo bed . The result: visually awkward, as it didn't quite fit the overall look, but very practical and versatile, allowing it to carry up to 750 kilos.
However, for the third iteration, they've opted for a completely new design . At least, that's what they've announced, and it seems to be hinted at in the teaser and teaser video they've released. And not only that, but in the official press release, they offer the following explanation…
“ The new Montana will surprise the market with several innovations, starting with a smart design . The cab makes better use of interior space to offer more comfort to the occupants, while the bed will debut technologies that provide even greater versatility .”
As expected, to reduce development and production costs, the new Montana is part of the Chevrolet model family. Specifically, it shares its platform with the Onix, Onix Plus, and Tracker sold in various Latin American countries. Furthermore, all of these models are manufactured at the American group's technical center in São Caetano do Sul (SP – Brazil), which is currently being updated to accommodate the new Montana pickup.
However, if all goes according to plan, the debut of Chevrolet's new pickup truck will take place soon . They explain that it will be available in 2023, so they shouldn't take long to release new images and technical information. We'll be keeping a close eye on it…
