Today, it seems we've all accepted that electrification is the future . But a decade ago, it seemed like a distant prospect that would take thousands of years to become widespread. However, that wasn't the case, and in just a few years, technology and manufacturers have advanced tremendously. So much so that some models, despite their originality and/or technological level, have fallen a bit behind. One that stood out then, and still does now, is the now-legendary BMW i3.
You might not remember, but the BMW i3 was unveiled in 2013 and hit the streets for the first time in 2014. Back then, it looked like a "spaceship," mainly because it combined a futuristic design with technology superior to its few rivals. Even so, its positioning and price didn't make it easy, because although sales weren't a disaster, they weren't what BMW had projected either. Now it's bidding farewell in style with over a quarter of a million units manufactured…
After eight and a half years, the Leipzig factory has assembled just over 250 units of the BMW i3…

From the outset of its life cycle, BMW was clear that its manufacturing should take place in Germany . For this purpose, they chose their technical center in Leipzig, the same one that has also assembled units of its larger sibling, the i8. If we take a look at the official press release published by the Bavarian automaker, we can read that…
“ The BMW i3 was a standard-bearer of visionary technology from day one, and not just because of its electric drive. With its Life-Drive architecture , it also set new standards in the field of intelligent lightweight construction. In Leipzig, innovative processes unique in the automotive industry have been established for molding large-format body parts from the particularly lightweight, high-tech CFRP material.”
But in addition to being a pioneer in the production of composite bodywork, it marked the birth of eDrive technology . If you're not familiar with it, this is the commercial name BMW gives to the technology that powers its hybrid, plug-in hybrid (PHEV), and pure electric models . It's now in its fifth generation and has continued to evolve over the years, reaching high levels of refinement, as seen in the i7.
Finally, let's review some interesting facts about the i3's sales cycle . This model has been sold in more than 74 countries worldwide and, in many, has surpassed BMW's market share in the conventionally powered vehicle segment. Furthermore, over 80% of all i3 buyers were new BMW Group customers . The result? Just a few days ago, it surpassed the 250-unit mark manufactured in Leipzig.
Congratulations, and forever, dear friend BMW i3...
