BMW i3 and BMW i3S 2018: renewal and higher performance for the Frankfurt Motor Show

BMW i3 and BMW i3s

BMW began selling vehicles with alternative propulsion systems under its BMW i sub-brand, initially featuring the BMW i3 and BMW i8 . Numerous rumors and patent leaks suggest the imminent arrival of another model to this alternative vehicle sub-brand, such as the BMW i5, but for now, the focus is on updating the smallest model in the Bavarian automaker's lineup, the BMW i3.

BMW has once again thoroughly analyzed its own BMW i3 with the aim of making the most of this update . The facelift will be presented worldwide at the Frankfurt Motor Show , which opens its doors in a couple of weeks. The BMW i3 won't be arriving alone, as the Bavarian firm has also announced the introduction of a higher-performance, sportier variant called the BMW i3s.

Regarding the BMW i3 , this 2018 update includes some aesthetic changes that enhance its presence with a sportier look. These include new bumpers, full LED lighting, and new body colors. The interior has also been updated with new configuration options. It's worth noting that over 80% of the visible interior elements are recycled. Dynamically, it retains its 170 hp electric motor with 250 Nm of torque and a homologated range of 300 kilometers.

But the main news is the arrival of a new, sporty BMW i3s . This is a good opportunity to try and give a new boost to sales of this charming and efficient city car, which has been on the market for several years now. To begin with, the performance of the BMW i3s's electric motor is improved compared to the standard i3, with 184 hp and 270 Nm of torque . But that's not all. The BMW i3s receives a specific tuning, a lower ride height, and a 40 mm wider track . It also features 20-inch wheels and a sport driving mode.

The standard BMW i3 accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 7,3 seconds and has a top speed of 150 km/h. The BMW i3s improves on these figures slightly, reaching 100 km/h from a standstill in 6,9 seconds and achieving a top speed of 160 km/h. The differences in these two figures aren't significant, but the reduced height and wider track should noticeably improve road grip . Its official range is only about 20 kilometers less, at 280 km.
