F1 Austrian GP 2020: Race Results

Well, I have to say that "race results" isn't the best title for this 2020 Austrian F1 Grand Prix. I should really call it "what a race!" I can't remember a race this exciting and full of unexpected twists in a long time. It was definitely worth the wait after the pandemic to get this F1 season underway. What this race delivered today was incredible for the fans, and I think everyone enjoyed it, regardless of their team or driver preference.

It was crazy from start to finish . It's true that the start wasn't as chaotic as in the past with collisions and such, and it was relatively clean compared to other races. But that doesn't matter; the action was going to build gradually in the following laps. Although there was a point in the race that seemed a bit dull without many overtakes, the cars were there to give us some excitement and keep things moving. There were many retirements in this race, with almost half the cars finishing.

Red Bull Ring, Austrian GP

We've seen many problems , from those that Max Verstappen's Red Bull had, which appeared to be hydraulic or gearbox issues, to the right front wheel nut on Kimi Räikkönen's Alfa Romeo, as well as other engine problems that affected several other cars. We've also seen the Safety Car, yellow flags, and of course, penalties for some of the drivers. These penalties have also altered some of the final positions. Kudos to race control for acting very quickly and not making us wait until this afternoon for the final results…

One of those penalized was Lewis Hamilton . You could say he was the most affected. Today he started the race further back than the second place he qualified yesterday, and that wasn't going to be the only setback. He had an incident with Albon, not giving him any space on the track when the Red Bull tried to overtake him. This cost him a 5-second penalty, allowing Lando Norris to take the podium and set the fastest lap of the race. Well done to McLaren, an incredible weekend for the Briton.

Sergio Pérez also received a 5-second penalty (the same as Hamilton's), having had several run-ins with various drivers throughout the race, including the McLarens. In fact, when he was penalized for speeding in the pit lane, Lando Norris didn't stand idly by. He overtook Pérez, allowing him to push harder without the Racing Point's interference and potentially take Hamilton's position thanks to that other penalty.

As for Bottas, he did a fantastic job leading from start to finish. He managed to hold off his teammate. Despite Hamilton's radio calls to extract the full potential of his engine, there was no change in position, and Bottas secured pole position and the first F1 victory of 2020. Well done to the Finnish driver.

Well done to Latifi for his first race , finishing 11th in a Williams… On the other hand, I think it was Red Bull, who finished with both cars out of commission, despite having a good chance at a podium finish, and Ferrari, who, although Leclerc salvaged that unthinkable 2nd place, saw Sebastian Vettel finish 10th only because of the numerous retirements; otherwise, he wouldn't have made it. Furthermore, he spun again, this time while battling with McLaren. The year is starting much like the previous ones: driving errors and spins… confirming Ferrari's wise decision.

The whole race was amazing; I wish they were all like that . If they were, who would say F1 is boring? The problem is when the pack starts rolling and you practically know who's going to win and what's going to happen, plus there are very few overtakes and unpredictable moments. Those are the races we don't want.
