Atlas EV SUV: Morocco dreams of premium electric SUVs

We've said it a thousand times, but it seems necessary to repeat it. The electrification of the automotive sector is the perfect "excuse" for companies that have nothing to do with it to make the leap into car manufacturing. Currently, the number of companies or brands wanting to conquer this complex industrial niche is high, but it remains attractive to others. The latest model aiming to be the benchmark is the Atlas EV SUV…

Perhaps the Atlas EV SUV doesn't ring a bell, and you'd be right. It's a model that doesn't yet exist, but its parent company wants to launch it sooner rather than later . The fact is, for now, the information available about this model is very limited. Furthermore, the company behind it isn't exactly a global leader in the sector. So, we're going to tell you who Atlas E-Mobility Group is and why the Atlas EV SUV is being created…

The details that for now there are of the Atlas EV SUV are very few…

Atlas E-Mobility EV SUV side teaser

Before we tell you who Atlas E-Mobility Group is, let's try to decipher what the Atlas EV SUV will look like. For now, all we have of this model is a white render on a black background showing the basic lines of its body . These lines represent the side profile, but as is evident, they should be taken with a grain of salt because they don't reveal much. Yes, it's a coupe-style SUV with pronounced character lines , and little else.

According to several sources, it's an SUV positioned at the heart of the compact C-segment . In fact, some suggest its rivals will be the BMW iX1, Mercedes-Benz EQA, and Model Y, among others. But will it be a premium vehicle? This question isn't as clear as we'd like because it will be powered by an unknown electric powertrain . Furthermore, pre-existing OEM parts will be used to assemble the car in Morocco, reducing costs.

According to statements made by one of the company's founders to Autocar…

"The first thing is technology development: the cost of R&D. In our case, our R&D spending will be only 5% of the total investment . We are not developing everything ourselves, but we are capitalizing on the experience, knowledge, and technologies that have already been developed by other OEMs and other companies."

But who is behind Atlas E-Mobility Group and what are their intentions…?

According to their official website, Atlas E-Mobility Group is…

" An Anglo-Moroccan technology company born to redefine global electric mobility and launch the first battery electric vehicle designed and developed in Africa"

But they are not satisfied with this declaration of intent, because there is more…

"Based in London, UK, and with plans for state-of-the-art production facilities in Morocco, we are poised to combine the best British automotive engineering and industrialization expertise with proven Moroccan technology and manufacturing capabilities ."

Further…

“Our mission is to accelerate the transition to zero-emission mobility across the African continent and around the world . By introducing affordable, superior-engineered battery electric vehicles inspired by African design and identity and based on an established and proven OEM architecture, we will attract customers worldwide.”

Reading their plans, we can surmise that their ambition is global . However, the company was founded in 2020 by Mohammed Yehya El Bakkali and Mohammed Hicham Senhaji Hannoun, so this relative youth raises doubts about whether the project will actually come to fruition as they envision it. For now, they announce that the Atlas EV SUV will have a price of around 45 euros , but they haven't specified when it will be released.

We'll have to keep a very close eye on their movements, because the first regions they want to conquer are Africa, Europe, and the Middle East . And that's a big deal... isn't it?
