The arrival of the Mercedes-Benz EQB, according to rumors, will occur in 2021

The development of the Mercedes-Benz GLB has been a breath of fresh air for the German manufacturer's lineup. Combining an SUV body style with the versatility of a minivan has helped it reach a wider audience —basically, anyone looking for space and modularity but who didn't quite find the B-Class appealing. In any case, its virtues extend beyond both of these concepts, and soon, another one will be added.

Looking back at Mercedes-Benz's launch history, one detail stands out: for every new model, they've created an electric version . Given that the EQC is already on sale and the EQA is expected in 2021, it's reasonable to expect that an EQB is in development. This would confirm the words of Robert Lesnik, Mercedes' design director, who announced that all their models would have an electric version.

The Mercedes-Benz EQB will share a platform with the GLB

According to several sources, including Auto Express, the new Mercedes-Benz EQB is on its way . Its development would follow the same pattern as the EQC, meaning it would use the platform of the model it's based on. In this case, it's a significant modification of the MFA2 platform , which is also used by the new A-Class. Furthermore, the powertrain would be similar to that of the new EQA: an electric motor on each axle and the battery in a central position.

This configuration is truly interesting, but it would pose a problem regarding modularity. The GLB's raison d'être lies in its seven-seat cabin, but the EQB could lose its last two seats . The reason for this lies in the size required for the rear motor and battery . Therefore, customers looking for seven seats would have to consider versions equipped with internal combustion engines.

For now, there isn't much more information available about the Mercedes-Benz EQB, although it's expected to deliver around 270 hp and 500 Nm of maximum torque . Several test units have been spotted undergoing validation testing in cold climates. As expected, they're heavily camouflaged to prevent us from seeing its aesthetic evolution, although it should be subtle.

However, it is expected to hit the market in 2021, so we won't have to wait long to learn more details.
