Advantages and Disadvantages of Plug-in Hybrid Vehicles

Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) have become increasingly popular, which is understandable given the significant advantages these models offer. One of their main benefits , especially in large cities, is the zero-emissions label . Furthermore, the ability to drive in electric mode around town can result in substantial cost savings.

However, there are certain aspects of these types of vehicles that aren't so positive and, moreover, can limit us in certain situations. Today we're going to look at the main points to highlight, both positive and negative, about PHEVs. Of course, we'll be speaking in general terms since not all models on the market meet the same standards.

Loss of trunk capacity

Limited trunk space in plug-in hybrid vehicles is a very common and understandable issue. These models, with their relatively large batteries, can significantly reduce trunk space.

The Seat Leon SP , the station wagon version, offers a generous 620 liters of cargo space . However, the PHEV variant drops to 470 liters . While still a decent amount, it represents a significant loss of 150 liters, or 25% less trunk space.

If we apply this to a compact car, such as the Audi A3 , it has a capacity of 380 liters , so it doesn't have much space to spare. If we look at its plug-in hybrid variant , the loss in trunk space is truly noticeable, as it drops to just 280 liters.

Great benefits with the ZERO label

One of the main reasons many plug-in hybrid vehicle customers decided to switch to this type of engine is the DGT's (Spanish Directorate General of Traffic) emissions sticker. PHEVs have the ZERO emissions sticker , which in large cities like Madrid can be a major advantage.

For example, in Madrid's SER zone, with this sticker we can drive freely without having to enter a parking garage, as is mandatory with the ECO, C, and B stickers. Another positive point is when parking, as we will not have any time restrictions like those mentioned above.

Furthermore, if you intend to park on a street with green or blue zone parking, with a ZERO emissions vehicle you can park without taking a ticket and therefore don't have to pay, and you can park without any restrictions . With ECO, C, and B emissions stickers, you have to pay and are limited to a maximum of 4 hours, depending on the zone.

Economic savings on a day-to-day basis

Another positive point is the potential for significant savings. In many cases, owners of these types of vehicles can easily charge at home at a very low rate, resulting in one less expense at the end of the month, which is always welcome.

On the other hand, sometimes you can charge your phone in public places, shopping centers, or supermarkets completely free of charge . Imagine making your daily commutes without spending a single euro; there's no doubt it's incredibly tempting these days.

Increased fuel consumption

If we continue discussing the negative aspects, one common issue is increased fuel consumption . For example, the A250e and the A200 have the same combustion engine, but the A250e consumes slightly more fuel. This could be due to the gearbox ratios, the increased weight of the vehicle, or the car's power distribution.

Ultimately, we're talking about a 250 kg difference between one version and another , so having more weight means we have to exert more pressure on the right pedal, the car needs more force to start moving, and it causes an increase in fuel consumption.

However, it's not always like that. There are models like the Toyota RAV4 Plug-In that surprises a lot in a positive way with the consumption it has. On a day-to-day basis, even without electric range, the RAV4 plug-in hybrid had a fuel consumption of around 5,8 liters per 100 km, something ridiculous for its dimensions and weight.

Higher price

Peugeot 308

Here comes one of the most important issues, and one that we all consider: the price. PHEV vehicles have a higher cost , which the end consumer clearly has to pay. This is one of the reasons why many potential buyers of this type of vehicle don't take the plunge.

Let's compare a petrol Opel Astra with its plug-in hybrid version . The Astra with the GS Line trim, a 130 hp petrol engine, and an automatic transmission has a price of €31.949. However, the Astra with the same trim but the hybrid powertrain reaches a price of €38.189, a difference of approximately €6.000.
