Denza, the premium brand of Chinese giant BYD , is accelerating its entry into the European market with a model that promises to be a real talking point. It's the BAO 5, a large SUV with a plug-in hybrid powertrain and clear off-road aspirations. The company officially unveiled it at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, a must-attend event for motoring enthusiasts, and it has been generating considerable buzz ever since.
This five-seater SUV arrives to compete directly with heavyweights like the Land Rover Defender and the Toyota Land Cruiser , but with a very different approach: it embraces electrification without sacrificing off-road capabilities . Its propulsion system, dubbed DMO (Dual Mode Off-road), combines a 1,5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine with two electric motors, one on each axle, to achieve a combined output of 544 hp and a maximum torque of 760 Nm.
Design and dimensions of the new and impressive Denza BAO 5…
The BAO 5 features a robust, boxy body with generous ground clearance and functional details such as side steps, underbody protection, and a spare tire mounted on the tailgate. It measures between 4,89 and 4,92 meters in length, depending on the trim level, with a width of 1,97 meters and a wheelbase of 2,80 meters. The Ultimate trim adds the DiSus-P intelligent hydraulic suspension , which raises the ground clearance by up to 31 centimeters, improving the approach (39°) and departure (34°) angles. This version also includes 20-inch wheels and power-retractable running boards.
The interior and equipment are showy and of almost premium quality…

The Denza BAO 5's interior prioritizes technology and comfort. Front occupants have access to four screens: a 12,3-inch digital instrument cluster, a head-up display, a 15,6-inch central touchscreen with integrated Google Maps, Assistant, and Play Store, and a separate screen for the passenger. The sound system is by Devialet, with 16 speakers in the Elegance trim and 18 in the Ultimate. The front seats are electrically adjustable, heated, ventilated, and feature a 10-point massage function , while the rear seats are also heated and, in the Ultimate trim, ventilated. A unique feature is the 4,5-liter heated and cooled central compartment, capable of maintaining temperatures between -6 and 50 degrees Celsius.
DMO technology and features…

The heart of the Denza BAO 5 is the DMO architecture, developed specifically for electrified SUVs. The longitudinally mounted combustion engine produces 150 hp and primarily acts as a generator, powering the battery and electric motors. These motors deliver 272 hp to the front axle and 388 hp to the rear, allowing the SUV to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4,8 seconds in the Elegance version, with a top speed limited to 180 km/h. The battery, a 31,8 kWh Blade Battery integrated into the chassis using Cell-to-Chassis technology, provides an electric range of 90 kilometers according to the WLTP cycle. With a full tank and a fully charged battery, the combined range reaches 835 km, with an average fuel consumption of just 4,2 L/100 km and CO2 emissions of 94 g/km.
Versions and prices in Europe…

The range comprises two trim levels: Elegance and Ultimate. The Elegance includes 18-inch alloy wheels, a panoramic sunroof, fixed side steps, massaging front seats, a heated steering wheel, ambient lighting, and 50W wireless charging as standard. The Ultimate adds DiSus-P suspension, 20-inch alloy wheels, ventilated rear seats, a digital rearview mirror, and an upgraded audio system. In terms of safety, the BAO 5 features 11 airbags, a high-strength steel structure (96%), and a comprehensive suite of driver assistance systems, including a 360° camera, hill descent control, and rear cross-traffic alert. Prices for the Spanish market have not yet been announced , but in the UK, they start at £69.500 (approximately €81.400) for the Elegance and £78.880 (approximately €92.400) for the Ultimate.
The first units are expected to arrive at European dealerships before the end of 2026, perhaps during the summer. With the BAO 5, Denza aims to carve out a niche in the premium electrified SUV segment, offering a combination of sporty performance, hybrid efficiency, and genuine off-road capabilities. Its main advantage is a powertrain that allows for daily electric driving while simultaneously tackling challenging terrain without relying on a diesel engine. We'll have to wait for its arrival in Spain to see if it manages to win over the most demanding drivers.
