The Spanish plug-in hybrid car market is undergoing a significant transformation. For years, this category was dominated by European and Japanese manufacturers, but the arrival of Chinese brands has altered the balance with a proposition based on three very specific elements: technology, features, and price. The best example is the BYD Seal U DM-i , a family SUV that has quickly become one of the best-selling models in the country.
With 6.864 units registered of the plug-in hybrid version, the Seal U DM-i already occupies second position in the PHEV ranking in Spain, only surpassed by its little brother, the BYD Atto 2. The figure represents 91,5% of the 7.500 total deliveries that the model has accumulated so far this year, a fact that confirms that Spanish buyers especially value this powertrain for its balance between daily consumption and range on long journeys.
A major blow for the Toyota RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid
A direct comparison with the Toyota RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid reveals a price difference of €10.700. The Japanese model starts at €46.750, while the Seal U DM-i starts at €35.240. This gap, often rounded to €11.000, is the deciding factor for many buyers, especially those seeking a D-segment SUV with a zero-emissions label and a very comprehensive standard equipment package.

The Chinese manufacturer not only competes on price, but has also gained significant recognition for its reliability . The OCU (Spanish Consumers' Organization) ranks it sixth in its list, a position historically reserved for Japanese brands. This fact, combined with the warranty and an expanding sales network, is breaking down the barrier of mistrust that once existed towards Chinese cars.
Versions, prices and range
The BYD Seal U DM-i is available in three plug-in hybrid configurations: Boost, Comfort, and Design AWD. All use lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries with AC charging up to 11 kW and DC charging up to 18 kW, as well as a V2L function to power external devices.
- Boost218 hp, 85 km electric range, from 35.240 euros.
- Comfort218 hp, 125 km electric range, from 38.790 euros.
- AWD Design324 hp, all-wheel drive, 70 km range, from 39.990 euros.

The Comfort version offers the greatest electric range, while the Design AWD prioritizes power and traction. All models include 19-inch wheels, a sunroof, 360-degree cameras, heated and ventilated power seats, and a multimedia system with a 12,8-inch or 15,6-inch rotating screen compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
The trunk, the weak point

Despite its 4,77-meter length and very spacious rear seats, the trunk capacity is only 425 liters, a figure similar to that of a much more compact B-SUV like the BYD Atto 2. For a family that needs to carry large suitcases, this could be a drawback compared to rivals like the Ford Kuga PHEV, which offers 395 liters, or the RAV4, which isn't much better. In any case, the Seal U DM-i compensates for this lack of space with an electric range superior to most of its competitors.
However, the success of this Chinese SUV is no accident. It combines an aggressive price, efficient mechanics, and a reputation that grows daily. Sales figures reflect that Spanish buyers no longer view Chinese brands with suspicion, and the Seal U DM-i has become the go-to alternative for those who want a plug-in hybrid without paying the premium price of premium brands.
