Hyundai and Kia revolutionize mobility: All the keys to their new next-generation hybrid system

  • Hyundai Motor Group and Kia are introducing a next-generation hybrid system that incorporates two electric motors in the transmission and 2.5- and 1.6-liter turbocharged engines.
  • Improvements in energy efficiency and power: up to 45% more efficiency and 19% more power compared to traditional engines.
  • Electrical innovations imported from electric vehicles: V2L modes, Stay Mode, electric all-wheel drive, and intelligent regenerative braking.
  • Application across a wide range of models, starting with the Hyundai Palisade Hybrid and progressively expanding to Kia, Genesis, and future releases.

Kia K4 Hatchback

In today's automotive sector, where electrification is advancing rapidly but still has to coexist with diverse needs and realities in different markets, the arrival of the latest hybrid systems from Hyundai and Kia represents a turning point in the development of sustainable mobility. There is not only a focus on efficiency and performance, but also a clear intention to offer versatile solutions that can be adapted to all types of vehicles, and especially to SUVs.

Hyundai Motor Group and Kia unveiled their new hybrid system at the international “Next-Gen Hybrid System Tech Day” event . At the event, both companies presented a detailed overview of the new technological platform that marks the beginning of a new generation of electrified powertrains for both brands. This architecture is the result of their extensive experience with electric vehicles and traditional powertrains, combining the best of both worlds into a single solution.

A modular and flexible hybrid system for all types of vehicles…

Hyundai Motor Group Unveils Next-generation Hybrid System, Delivering a New Standard in Power and Efficiency

The key to its technology lies in the integration of two electric motors within the transmission itself : the P1 motor, responsible for functions such as starting, combustion assistance, and battery power generation; and the P2 motor, which handles direct propulsion and regenerative braking. This approach helps optimize the overall performance and smooth both gear changes and power delivery in all driving situations.

The transmission's modular design allows it to be paired with internal combustion engines of varying displacement and power output . This means it can accommodate engines ranging from just over 100 hp to the 300 hp range. Therefore, the system is suitable for a wide variety of vehicles, from city cars to large SUVs and luxury models from brands like Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis.

Outstanding improvements in efficiency and performance

Hyundai Motor Group Unveils Next-generation Hybrid System, Delivering a New Standard in Power and Efficiency

One of the most notable aspects of this hybrid generation is the improvement in both energy efficiency and dynamic performance . The new 2.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine , in its hybrid version, delivers 334 hp and 460 Nm of torque , resulting in 45% lower fuel consumption and 19% more power compared to its combustion engine predecessor . Meanwhile, the 1.6-liter hybrid engine is specifically designed for mid-size SUVs, providing up to 380 Nm of torque and a 4% improvement in efficiency compared to previous equivalent engines.

These figures are possible thanks to innovations such as the super-expansion cycle (which extracts more energy from combustion by delaying the closing of the intake valve), the use of redesigned pistons, and a triple fuel injection system, which promotes faster and more stable combustion, minimizing knocking. It also incorporates electronic features previously reserved for pure EVs :

  • e‑AWD and e‑VMC 2.0: electric all-wheel drive and torque vectoring for more precise response on all types of surfaces.
  • e-Handling 2.0 / e-EHA 2.0. They apply engine torque differentially to improve safety and stability, especially in sudden or evasive maneuvers.
  • e‑Ride 2.0. Smooths out movements on speed bumps and potholes through the intelligent use of electric motors.
  • Stay Mode. It allows you to keep the air conditioning and multimedia active for up to an hour when the car is stopped, using the battery and without having to start the combustion engine.
  • Vehicle-to-Load (V2L). It allows you to power external devices, from tools to household appliances, with a power of up to 3,6 kW, exactly the same as a pure electric one.
  • Smart Regenerative Braking. Automatic adjustment of the regeneration level according to traffic and route topography, maximizing energy recovery.

Progressive implementation: from the Palisade Hybrid to the entire Hyundai, Kia, and premium Genesis ranges…

Hyundai Palisade 2026 0

The commercial introduction of this technology begins with the new Hyundai Palisade Hybrid . Production has already started, and it will serve as a launchpad for expanding this hybrid powertrain to a wider range of vehicles. The list will include SUVs like the Hyundai Santa Fe, models from Kia, and the premium brand Genesis.

The official roadmap also includes the expansion to rear-wheel-drive versions and future variants with up to five hybrid powertrains . This will broaden the product range and allow the company to respond to the demands of different markets and user profiles.
