After almost a year of advances and prototypes, the final ID.7 se unveiled at the 2023 Shanghai Auto Show. An important appointment given the great weight that the Chinese market has in Volkswagen sales. Although its information launch occurs in the spring, its arrival on the markets does not take place until the last quarter of the same year. At the beginning of 2024, the more familiar version will be launched under the name ID.7 Tourer.
Technical characteristics of the Volkswagen ID.7
As part of the electrification strategy, the Volkswagen Group has developed a specific platform for its electric models. The MEB architecture is characterized by its versatility and adaptability. It is easily customizable and for this reason it is used in a wide variety of models such as the ID.7, the Skoda Enyaq IV, Audi Q4 etron or the very Volkswagen ID.Buzz.
In this particular case, the Volkswagen ID.7 uses the largest version of all possible for the platform. Thanks to this it is located in the European segment D. Its external measurements are: 4,96 meters long, 1,86 meters wide and 1,54 meters high. To these dimensions we must add other important data such as an aerodynamic coefficient of 0,23 and a wheelbase of 2,97 meters.
This means that the ID.7 offers a generous space in all its seats. with cFour doors provide space for five passengers. Three of them are located in a second row of seats where the great legroom stands out. Regarding load capacity, The Volkswagen ID.7 announces a minimum trunk volume of 532 liters, expandable up to a maximum of 1.586 liters if we completely fold down the second row of seats. The ID.7 Tourer body, presented in 2024, expands the limits of habitability with a minimum trunk of 605 liters.
Volkswagen ID.7 mechanical range
The MEB platform designed exclusively for electric models allows a wide variety of configurations. The ID.7 is the first in the house to use the latest generation of Volkswagen electric motors, recognized by the APP550 code, capable of offering more features with lower consumption. The range is made up of three different units, with a variable number of motors and different battery sizes.
The family access version is the ID.7 Pro. It has a performance of 286 horsepower and 550 Nm of torque. It is associated with a lithium-ion battery with 77 kWh of net capacity that manages to certify a autonomy of 620 kilometers in combined cycle. It offers a charging power of 150 kW in direct current and up to 11 kW in alternating current.
Above him stands the ID.7 Pro S. with the same number of horses, but powered by a battery with 86 kWh net capacity. Thanks to this, its autonomy increases considerably up to 700 kilometers of range in combined cycle. The most powerful of the family is the ID.7 Tourer GTX with two electric motors. It reaches a maximum power of 340 horsepower which, together with the 86 kWh capacity battery, allows it to certify more than 650 kilometers of autonomy.

To date, Volkswagen's ID range has been criticized for a loss of quality over conventional thermal models. However, the Volkswagen ID.7 is established as the flagship of the house and that means that better materials are offered inside and technological innovations that later extend to the rest of the range.
As is customary at Volkswagen, the commercial offer includes several trim levels, corresponding to the aforementioned mechanics: Pro and Pro More. In addition to the battery capacity, there are also other differences on an aesthetic level, but above all in terms of technology and systems.
As far as equipment is concerned, the Volkswagen ID.7 offers the most advanced developments of the brand, including a specifically developed thermal management system. In addition to that, we must add other interesting elements such as: IQ Matrix LED headlights, keyless entry and starting, digital instrumentation, heat pump air conditioning, HUD with augmented reality, electric seats, multimedia system with 15-inch touch panel, electrochromic panoramic roof and a complete team of aids and assistants with a level 2 autonomous driving.

Like the rest of the vehicles on sale in Europe, the Wolfsburg electric sedan must undergo the usual standardized safety tests. In 2023, in the Euro NCAP tests the Volkswagen ID.7 obtains five safety stars, the highest possible score. At the moment of truth, Volkswagen is very aware that the competition is increasingly tough and daring. The arrival of rivals from China has caused an increase in the number of similar units.
