The Toyota Aygo is a city car belonging to the A segment and is the smallest vehicle that Toyota sells in its dealerships, just above other successful models such as the Toyota Yaris or Toyota Corolla . Although it was previously sold with several body styles, it is currently offered exclusively as a five-door city car.
We have tested this car:
Test Toyota Aygo 1.0 69 CV x-clusiv, the most daring urbaniteTest Toyota Aygo 1.0 VVT-i 72 CVThe first generation of the Aygo was officially launched in 2005 , a golden age for models in this category. That first generation remained on the market until 2014, having undergone a significant mid-cycle update in 2012.
The second and final generation was unveiled at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show . Since then, the small Japanese model has only undergone one significant update, in 2018, which introduced improvements and new features across the board. Finally, in mid-2021, the small Japanese city car disappeared from the lineup, its place taken by the Toyota Aygo X-Cross.
Technical characteristics of the Toyota Aygo
The Aygo is the result of a joint venture between several brands. Toyota, along with the PSA Group, which includes Citroën and Peugeot , jointly oversaw its development. The result is three models that look different but are essentially the same . You could say the Aygo is a close relative of the Peugeot 108 and the Citroën C1 , because although they may not look alike, they are essentially the same car with different bodies.
The Toyota Aygo is sold exclusively as a five-door model. Its dimensions place it squarely within the A-segment: 3,46 meters long, 1,61 meters wide, and 1,46 meters high . To these exterior dimensions, we must add a wheelbase of just 2,34 meters. This wheelbase results in a very limited interior space, with seating for a maximum of four passengers.
The Toyota Aygo boasts a minimum trunk capacity of 168 liters . This volume can be increased by folding down the second row of seats completely. In its five-door configuration, the small Japanese car comes in two different versions: one with a hardtop and another with a retractable soft top called the x-sky . It's not a convertible, as the pillars and structure don't support the retractable roof.
Mechanical range and gearboxes of the Toyota Aygo

The urban performance expected of the Toyota Aygo allows it to offer a very limited engine range, exclusively with a single gasoline version . This limited-power unit is always paired with a five-speed manual transmission. A five-speed automatic transmission is available as an option.
The engine in question is a naturally aspirated, front-mounted, three-cylinder unit with a displacement of 998 cc. It produces 72 horsepower at 6.000 rpm and 93 Nm of torque at 4.400 rpm. Officially, it boasts a combined WLTP fuel consumption of 4,8 liters per 100 kilometers.
The future of the smallest model in the lineup is currently unknown. Based on current purchasing trends, the supermini segment is shifting towards fully electric vehicles . Many of Toyota's rivals have already made the switch, but Toyota is not taking the plunge, clearly opting for conventional hybrid technology, as it does with the rest of its product range.
Equipment of the Toyota Aygo

Inside, the Toyota Aygo looks like a typical city car. The quality of the materials is merely adequate. All surfaces are made of hard plastic , and the few quality details are limited to specific areas such as the leather steering wheel or the seats, which are mostly upholstered in fabric, with some leather accents in the higher trim levels.
As is customary for the brand, the Aygo boasts a comprehensive and varied range of equipment, offering extensive and diverse customization options. Currently, four different trim levels are available: x-play, x-cite JBL, x-clusiv, and x-style . Unlike the first three, the latter is always paired with the version equipped with a retractable canvas roof.
In terms of equipment, the Aygo suffers from a long lifespan and a clear urban focus, lacking excessive luxuries. Notable features include: keyless entry and start, LED daytime running lights, a multimedia system with a seven-inch touchscreen, mobile device connectivity and navigation , automatic climate control, a multifunction steering wheel, and the Toyota Safety Sense suite of safety features.

The Toyota Aygo according to Euro NCAP
In 2017, Euro NCAP tested the Aygo's safety in its renowned crash tests. After undergoing these tests, the Japanese city car was awarded three out of five stars for safety . The results showed a score of 7,4 for adult occupant protection, 6,3 for child occupant protection, 6,4 for pedestrian protection, and 2,5 for driver assistance systems. Subsequently, the tests were repeated with the safety package installed, and the rating rose to four stars.
The Toyota Aygo of Km 0 and second hand
During its years on the market, the Toyota Aygo has achieved strong sales figures, particularly during its first generation (2005-2014). However, changing market trends have led to a decline in sales of A-segment models, which have lost popularity and experienced a significant depreciation, though in the case of the Japanese model, this depreciation is in line with the segment average.
In secondary sales channels, such as the used car market, we observed that the most affordable units date from that first generation, with starting prices around €2.000 for models with over 180 kilometers . The nearly new (Km 0) market is very limited. There are hardly any units available for sale. Some of these units have prices with significant discounts compared to dealership prices.
Rivals of the Toyota Aygo

Electric vehicles are emerging as the ideal mobility solution for short or medium-distance journeys. City cars are the most sensible option due to their affordable price and numerous advantages. Almost the entire A-segment is transitioning to electric mobility. Despite this, the Toyota Aygo continues to rely on internal combustion engines, but its rivals remain the same as before . In addition to its siblings, the C1 and 108, notable competitors include the Renault Twingo , Smart Forfour , SEAT Mii Electric , Skoda Citigo iV , Mitsubishi Space Star , Suzuki Ignis , Volkswagen e-up!, and FIAT 500. The advantage of opting for non-electric technologies is that the 108 can offer a lower price point.

Toyota Aygo prices
Despite its longevity, limited equipment, and short, inefficient engine range, the Aygo can be considered an expensive car. The starting price for the Toyota Aygo is €11.700 , without any offers or promotions. This price corresponds to a model with the x-play trim and a five-speed manual transmission. The most expensive in the family is the Aygo with the x-style trim, featuring a retractable canvas roof and an automatic transmission. The starting price for that model is €15,000, also without any offers or promotions.
