Ssang Yong Motor Company is a South Korean automobile manufacturer with a history dating back to 1954, when was founded as Ha Dong-Hwan Motor WorkshopIn its early days, the company specialized in the manufacture of military vehicles, trucks, and buses. In 1986, it adopted the name SsangYong, that means "two dragons", a symbol of power and balance in Asian culture.

During the 1990s, SsangYong gained notoriety by signing a technological alliance with Mercedes-Benz, which directly influenced some of its models. The Musso SUV, for example, incorporated German engines and technology and was exported to Europe under brands such as Mercedes-Benz and Daewoo. Another notable model was the Korando, a compact SUV that combined a robust design with off-road capabilities, and which had several generations since the 80s.

The brand is also known for its quirky and daring designs. Rodius (2004), a a mix of SUV and minivan, was the subject of controversy due to its unconventional aesthetics, although it offered ample space for large families.

In 2004, SsangYong was acquired by the Chinese group SAIC, but strategic differences and the global financial crisis led to its disengagement. In 2011, it was acquired by the Indian group Mahindra & Mahindra, which invested in modernizing its model range, such as the Tivoli, a compact SUV that was well-received in several international markets.

Despite its ups and downs, SsangYong has maintained its focus on SUVs and 4x4 vehicles, consolidating its own identity within the sector.
