New times demand changes. Important changes are those that have undergone Smart. The old manufacturer of microcars has adapted to new mobility formats. Now, after falling into the hands of the Chinese giant Geely, it begins a stage marked by new formats and new models. The Smart # 1 it is the first product of that new era.
It is the first SUV of the house, although it is not fair to compare the current Smart with that of a few years ago. After signing an agreement between Geely and Mercedes-Benz, the Germans have given the development of this new model. Its launch occurs in April 2022, although its commercial landing does not take place until the end of 2022.
Technical characteristics of the Smart #1
For this new step, Smart has worked on an approach from scratch. With a blank sheet of paper, project #1 has evolved, introducing novelties never seen before in the house. Under its new SUV body, the Smart #1 rests on a platform from Geely. A structure designed for small-size models and electrical mechanics, called SEA (Sustainable Experience Architecture).
After abandoning production of its two most popular models, the Smart Fortwo and the smart forfour, #1 enters a new stage. Its SUV body will be offered to the segment B thanks to dimensions that extend to 4,27 meters long, 1,82 meters wide and 1,64 meters high with a wheelbase of 2,75 meters, a very generous dimension to be a segment B.
Thanks to this battle, the interior will show optimal habitability for a maximum of five passengers. Three of them will be installed on a rear bench with optimal space where three adults travel a bit narrow given the small width of the vehicle. Regarding load capacity, the Smart #1 offers two trunks, a rear one with a minimum capacity of 273 liters and a front one that adds an additional 15 liters.
Mechanical range and Smart #1 gearboxes

When facing the Smart #1 project, Geely has considered a larger model with an exclusively electric approach. The brand's urban philosophy will remain alive, although new concepts based on state-of-the-art electrical systems are being explored. This technology is accompanied by a neutral design where the aerodynamics has a coefficient of only 0,29.
The heart of this small electric SUV is its battery, available in several different sizes. The entry-level models offer a 47 kWh net capacity LFP battery with which they are approved for up to 310 kilometres of autonomy. Above are the models with Lithium-ion battery with 62 kWh net capacity capable of offering up to 440 kilometers of autonomy homologated (WLTP cycle).
These batteries are responsible for moving one or two electric motors with Powers between 272 and 428 horsepower. For recharging, high-power systems are chosen, up to 150 kW in direct current and up to 22 kW in alternating current. The most powerful of the family is recognized by the name #1 Brabus.
Smart #1 Equipment

Although Daimler is no longer in charge of producing the Smart, the small electric car does keep several elements that are reminiscent of the German firm. The interior of #1 shows a very good aspect. A very complete presentation with good quality materials and extensive technology. All this completed by customizable decorative elements.
The Smart equipment range is structured into different levels: Pure, Pure+, Pro, Pro+, Premium, Pulse and Brabus.. To all of them we must add a special startup unit called: Launch Edition. In each of them we can see different details, being able to go from a more sober and basic finish to a more sporty one with wheels up to 19 inches and personalized details.
As far as systems and technologies are concerned, Just because it's a small B-SUV doesn't mean the new Smart has to make do with little.. The offer of elements includes: LED headlights, digital instrumentation with a 9,2-inch screen, Head-Up Display, multimedia system with a 12,8-inch touch panel, digital services, wireless connectivity for mobile devices, voice control and multiple assistants to driving.

The Smart #1 according to Euro NCAP
Despite its size, the Smart #1 proves to be well prepared for safety. Euro NCAP certifies it with its five safety stars, being one of the best in the category. The results by sections are as follows: 96 out of 100 in adult passenger protection, 89 out of 100 in child passenger protection, 71 out of 100 in pedestrian vulnerability and 88 out of 100 in driving assistance systems.
Rivals of Smart #1
Smart has been able to play his cards very well when developing the new #1. With a growing electricity market, the most affordable segments are postulated as the most attractive to the public. Many manufacturers choose the B-SUV market to launch electric units. Given this scenario, the Smart #1 will have as rivals models of the stature of the Peugeot e-2008, Opel Mokka, Hyundai Kona Electric o KIA e-Soul. More models will be added to the category in the future.
