Skoda It is a generalist brand that stands out for the good work of its products and the low sale price. The Czechs have made an art of price-product ratio, and few can match them. The Skoda Kodiaq is its largest SUV, the flagship of a family that over time has been completed with the arrival of its little brothers: the Skoda Karoq and Skoda Kamiq. It serves as a curiosity that the name of Skoda Kodiaq refers to the largest brown bear in the world, which lives on the islands of the Kodiak archipelago, southwest of Alaska.

Although the SUV fashion has been conquering the European market for years, since the beginning of the century, the Kodiaq is a fairly recent product. It was officially presented at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show. In 2021 it receives a slight update focused on offering more equipment, small aesthetic changes and a minimally electrified mechanical range. Later, at the end of 2023, the second iteration arrives with many more new features in all sections.

Technical characteristics of the Skoda Kodiaq

The Czechs belong to one of the world's largest car conglomerates, the Volkswagen Group. Thanks to this, they can make use of a multitude of shared components such as the MQB EVO platform on which the Skoda Kodiaq is based. It is the same that we can see in a multitude of house products, such as the Listen Q3, Volkswagen Tiguan or SEAT Tarraco.

For the specific case of the Kodiaq, it is customized to offer exterior dimensions worthy of the D-SUV segment, the segment to which it belongs. 4,76 meters long, 1,86 meters wide and 1,66 meters high. To these measurements we must add a wheelbase estimated at 2,79 meters. A very generous wheelbase that allows it to offer excellent habitability in all its seats.

Historically, the Kodiaq has always offered two different habitability options for five or seven passengers, as well as plenty of cargo capacity. Official figures announce that The Skoda Kodiaq has a minimum trunk volume of 910 liters, a figure that can be increased or reduced if we fold down the second row of seats or if we unfold the third row of the trunk floor.

Mechanical range and gearboxes of the Skoda Kodiaq

When talking about mechanics and performance levels, it must be said that the latest generation of the Kodiaq is very updated under the hood, thus solving one of the basic problems of the previous edition by not being able to offer electrified systems. The range is supported by MHEV diesel and petrol units with ECO label, as well as a new plug-in hybrid unit with ZERO badge.

Due to performance, the offer starts with Kodiaq 1.5 TSI  with turbocharged four-cylinder engine that delivers 150 horses. All power is sent to the front axle through a seven-speed DSG automatic gearbox. Next, within the gasoline offer, is the Kodiaq 2.0 TSI with 204 horsepower, automatic transmission and 4×4 traction. Above all is the Kodiaq RS with a 2.0 TSI EVO engine of 265 horsepower and 400 Nm of torque with a top speed of 232 km/h.

The diesel branch offers only one engine, the Kodiaq 2.0 TDI four-cylinder that offers 150 and 193 horsepower with seven-speed DSG transmission and front or all-wheel drive. The real novelty is the Kodiaq 1.5 TSI PHEV. It is a plug-in hybrid 204 horsepower equipped with a 25,7 kWh lithium-ion battery of gross capacity that allows it to certify an electric range of 100 kilometers in the WLTP cycle.

Equipment of the Skoda Kodiaq

One of the keys to Skoda's success lies in the fact that it offers a lot for a contained price. From doors inside the Skoda Kodiaq is shown as a good SUV. The flagship sports a lot of technology and great attention to finishes. The feeling of quality is correct, slightly higher than the segment average, thanks to the use of soft materials with a pleasant touch.

As is customary in the Czech company, lThe range of equipment for Spain is structured in different levels: Selection, Design and SportlineThe RS trim level, the most complete and expensive within the Skoda structure, is located apart. The main differences between them lie in the technological load as standard as well as in different design alterations, being able to go from a more sober look to a more elegant or sporty one.

In terms of equipment, it must be recognized that the Skoda Kodiaq offers everything of a flagship, matching many features of models such as the Skoda Octavia. It should be noted: matrix LED headlights, keyless entry and start, digital instrument panel, multimedia system with 12,9-inch screen, browser, connectivity for mobile devices and a long list of practical details and security elements.

The Skoda Kodiaq of Km 0 and second hand

Despite being an SUV, the format and price of the Skoda Kodiaq do not encourage people to launch the purchase. Although it has garnered good reviews since its inception, sales have not accompanied it, and therefore alternative sales channels offer few units available for sale. In them we observe a moderate percentage of depreciation, around 30%, standing in the middle ground with reference to its segment.

If we take a look at second-hand and second-hand market we see that prices start from figures close to 17.000 eros for 2017 models with more than 200 thousand kilometers driven, generally with diesel mechanics and base finish. Less popular is the Km 0 channel, where prices do not represent a great saving compared to the new factory models. Currently all available units are prior to the 2023 model.

Rivals of the Skoda Kodiaq

For its size, the Skoda Kodiaq fits perfectly into the general segment of the D-size SUV. Although it is not as popular a market as the C and B SUV segments, that does not mean that the competition is tough and complicated. The list of rivals of the Czech are counted by dozens, where important and well-known figures such as: Nissan X-Trail, Peugeot 5008, Volkswagen tiguan allspace, KIA Sorrento, Hyundai Santa Fe y Renault Koleos. Without a doubt, its most direct rival is the SEAT Tarraco since both share development and the vast majority of mechanical components.
