The Renault Scenic is one of the most famous and well-known models in the compact MPV segment. In recent years, the MPV segment in Europe has shifted its focus, discontinuing classic models and retaining larger formats. Many of the vehicles we've seen, like the Scenic, have been converted into SUVs, something that has also recently happened with its larger sibling, the Renault Espace.

The Renault Scenic has been on the market since 1995. Over the years, different and extravagant versions have been released, such as the Scenic RX4 camper van, as well as several generations. We are currently on the fifth generation, launched in late summer 2023. This generation is completely different from its predecessors, not only in its design but also in its mechanical components.

Technical characteristics of the Renault Scenic

Due to its size and design, the Renault Scenic falls within the compact segment. Renault and Nissan form a global alliance, which is why many components are shared between products from both brands. In this case, the CMF-EV platform is used , a modular architecture designed for electric vehicles that is increasingly used in models such as the Nissan Ariya and the Renault Mégane E-TECH , among others.

In this case, the scalable architecture is showcased in a format ideal for the category. It features a body measuring 4,47 meters long, 1,86 meters wide, and 1,57 meters high . To these exterior dimensions, we must add a wheelbase of 2,78 meters. Historically, the Scenic has always been sold in two different formats, although for this generation, given its transformation into an SUV, it is only available in a single body length.

As a model with a clear family focus, the second row of seats features three seats split in a 40:20:40 configuration. Throughout the interior, there are numerous storage compartments, totaling up to 38,7 liters. Regarding cargo capacity, the Renault Scenic's trunk offers a minimum volume of 545 liters . This volume can be expanded to a maximum of 1.670 liters when the second row is folded down completely.

Mechanical range and gearboxes of the Renault Scenic

One of the most significant new features of the fifth generation is the adoption of exclusively electric powertrains. Bearing the E-TECH designation, the new Scenic offers a range powered by battery-driven electric systems. The lineup revolves around two versions with different power outputs and battery sizes, resulting in significantly varying driving ranges.

The entry-level model, the Standard Range Scenic , features a single motor on the front axle. It develops 170 horsepower and 260 Nm of torque. All the power is sent to the front wheels. It is powered by a ternary battery (NCM) with a gross capacity of 60 kWh. It officially boasts a WLTP range of 420 kilometers with a charging capacity of up to 130 kW DC and up to 22 kW AC.

In a higher-performance version, we find the Long Range Scenic . Like its smaller sibling, it features a single motor on the front axle, but in this case, performance increases to 218 horsepower and 300 Nm of torque. The ternary battery also increases in size to 87 kWh of gross capacity. Thanks to this, it can achieve a WLTP-rated range of up to 620 kilometers , while maintaining the aforementioned charging power rates.

When it comes to the interior, the Renault Scenic stands out as one of the best models in its segment. This improvement strategy is also applied by the manufacturer to other products, such as the Renault Clio . The perceived quality is high thanks to materials that are pleasant to the touch and not too hard . These materials are combined with other plastic surfaces designed to withstand the rigors of a family vehicle's life. Given the model's recent launch, details of the trim level have not yet been specified.

In terms of equipment, the Renault Scenic offers the latest technology from the brand . It features interesting elements that can be seen in other Renault models, such as the Rafale. Notable features include: full LED matrix headlights, parking cameras, heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, the Open R-Link multimedia system with a 12-inch touchscreen, digital instrumentation, and much more, including up to 30 driver assistance systems with Level 2 autonomous driving capabilities.

Throughout its years on the market, the Renault Scenic has earned a well-deserved reputation for its modularity, durability, and family-friendly qualities. It has consistently been one of the most highly regarded minivans thanks to its excellent value for money. As a result, secondary sales channels show many units available . The depreciation rate varies depending on the generation, although it currently exceeds 30%. All available units are from versions prior to the generation launched in 2023.

Looking at the used car market, we see that the most affordable units are for sale for around €600 . This price is for models from the early 2000s with diesel engines and over 200,000 kilometers on the odometer. In contrast, the nearly new (low mileage) market is practically nonexistent. Low sales of the model discourage dealerships from accumulating stock. The few units available offer attractive discounts.

Rivals of the Renault Scenic

The compact MPV segment has gradually disappeared . Almost all manufacturers have decided to abandon it, and many buyers are opting for versatile solutions like the Renault Kangoo , for example. Despite its transformation into an SUV, the Scenic still has competitors such as the Volkswagen ID.4 , the BMW iX1 , the BYD Atto 3 , the Mercedes EQB , and the Volvo XC40 Recharge . Among them, the French model stands out for its spacious interior and its all-electric powertrain.
