The Z family of Nissan has signed some of the most iconic pages in the history books of the motor world. To date, a total of six generations have been counted since the launch of the original Fairlady Z. The current model, the Nissan 370Z announces its arrival in 2009, as a model inferior in performance to the Nissan GT-R, the jewel in the sports crown of the house.

As we have already said, everything starts with the 1969 Nissan Fairlady Z, which in other markets was marketed under the names of Datsun 240Z or Nissan S30. The passing of the years came accompanied by diverse and multiple units with a diversity of generations and special editions. The 370Z generation is presented in society at the 2008 Los Angeles Motor Show, entering production in early 2009. The canvas-roof roadster body is introduced a year later.

In 2020 both bodies reach the end of their commercial stage in the European market. Sales never followed, but it has always been a much-loved model among the community of motor lovers. A new generation of the Nissan 370Z is officially presented in 2021, although only for the local market, Japan, and in the United States, where it has always enjoyed great popularity. It is unknown if it will finally reach Europe.

Technical characteristics of the Nissan 370Z

Nissan 370Z

Nissan's Z saga is one of the most famous in the history of affordable sports cars. Although the 370Z is considered to be the latest evolution of the family, under its muscular and attractive body the platform inherited from the 350Z is installed. A deep update and revision has involved the application of structural reinforcements, a new front suspension and a strengthening of the rear axle.

Conceptually speaking, the Nissan 370Z has a classic configuration: front engine, manual gearbox and rear-wheel drive. All this included in compact dimensions that guarantee the maximum possible dynamism. Outwardly it reaches 4,33 meters long, 1,87 meters wide and 1,31 meters high. To these dimensions must be added a wheelbase of 2,55 meters.

Said wheelbase allows a rear passenger compartment for optimal weight distribution on each axle. The cabin is designed for a maximum of two passengers. The roadster body modifies the rear dome to accommodate a retractable roof that reduces the load capacities of the Japanese sports car. The trunk volume of the 370Z announces a minimum capacity of 140 liters for the convertible and 235 liters for the coupé hard top.

Mechanical range and gearboxes of the Nissan 370Z

Nissan wants to become an efficient and eco-friendly brand with a highly electrified model range. However, the Nissan 370Z takes a diametrically opposite path. Much of the high doses of entertainment it causes come from the engine. At the end of its commercial stage, the 370Z offered only the most powerful version of all, although throughout its history there have been several engines offered.

The last available unit was the most desired of all, the Nissan 370Z NISMO, those letters evoke the most radical and extreme division of the house, seen in units such as the GT-R. It offers an engine made of aluminum with six cylinders in vee, naturally aspirated, double overhead camshafts and 3.696 cubic centimeters of displacement. Management is derived from a six-speed manual transmission that sends all the power of the train to the rear wheels.

The V6 delivers a total of 344 horsepower at 7.400 revolutions and a maximum torque of 371 Nm at 5.200 revolutions. The performance data has little or nothing to do with those currently offered by Nissan in its most commercial division. From 0 to 100 km/h in 5,2 seconds and top speed electronically limited to 250 km/h. All this included in a total weight of 1.610 kilograms and a drag coefficient of 0,3.

Equipment of the Nissan 370Z

Nissan 370Z

Although the Nissan 370Z has always stood out for various qualities, the excellence of its cabin has not been one of them. The sports concept is not always accompanied by luxuries, and less in the general market where every euro counts. From the inside, the sports car offers a cabin with classic overtones, but without excessive quality in terms of materials and execution.. Refinement isn't its forte either, with a distinct lack of soundproofing in the interior.

Although throughout its years on sale the 370Z has offered various levels of equipment and finishes, at the time of his dismissal only the NISMO unit was available, the top of the range in terms of power and equipment. This, in addition, offers a clearly different design with more sporty and risky details such as larger wheels or decorative moldings in competition red.

In terms of equipment, an impressive list of modern elements cannot be highlighted either. The Nissan 370Z focuses its efforts on delivering large doses of emotions without practically adulterating. Despite this, we find elements such as: automatic climate control, browser, keyless entry and start, bluetooth, Recaro sports seats, bi-xenon headlights and little else. A car from another era where the lack of driving assistants also stands out.

Sportiness has many ways of presenting itself on the market, the Nissan 370Z is a little-known model among the general public, but very popular among experts. Nissan's sports car saga is one of the most popular, and the 370Z is the last living member of it. That makes it highly sought after in alternative sales channels, where not many units go on sale. Such is its demand that the percentage of depreciation that it presents is 29,5% one of the best in the category.

If we take a look at the used and second-hand market, we see that the low production of the 370Z is reason for a very limited supply. Within the units for sale, we discovered that the cheapest correspond to models prior to the restyling of 2015. Starting prices are around 21.000 euros for models with more than 100.000 kilometers. Given the commercial cessation of the sports car in 2020, the Km 0 market is almost nil, few units at prices significantly lower than the original factory prices.

Rivals of the Nissan 370Z

Nissan 370Z

The Nissan 370Z is part of one of the market segments with less representation, as compact sports cars are no longer profitable for brands. In any case, the main rivals against which it has to fight in the market are the BMW Z4, A, Ford Mustang, Jaguar F-Type, Alpine A110, Mercedes-Benz SLC to Porsche 718 cayman y Boxster. In front of them offers an unrivaled price-to-power ratio and a highly efficient chassis which makes it a complex model to drive without aids. Currently the segment has been loaded with compact models with a sporty focus, where figures such as the Hyundai i30n, CUPRA Leon or Volkswagen Golf R.
