Mitsubishi, like the rest of the manufacturers, wants to stand out as a well-known creator of SUVs. Over the years, the legendary Japanese house has gotten rid of some iconic models in order to create many and varied SUVs. The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross he is the last to join the ranks of the house. A model that recalls a well-known denomination from memory.

The Mitsubishi Eclipse was known to all as a high-performance sports model that achieved success in its second generation, between 1995 and 1999. Sadly, in 2012 it disappeared from the markets after accumulating low sales volume. For a few years the name remains in a commercial limbo, re-emerging in 2018, at which point Mitsubishi resurrects him with the surname Cross.

The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross is the most modern and recent product of the house. By size it is positioned in a middle ground between the other two SUVs of the house, the Mitsubishi ASX and the Mitsubishi Outlander. Despite being a young product, at the end of 2021 it suffers from a slight facelift. A movement that is used to include new and more efficient mechanical variants.

Technical characteristics of the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross

Despite being a new product, the development of the Eclipse Cross is based on the same platform used by its two brothers in the range. The GS architecture is used as the basis, although applying the necessary modifications to comply with the size, the range of engines and more modern equipment. It is the first to receive a series of elements that will later reach more models of the house.

The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross sits perfectly in the C-SUV segment, the compact SUV segment. Outwardly, it reaches heights that take us to the 4.54 meters long, 1,8 meters wide and 1,68 meters high. To these measures must be added a ground clearance of 19 centimeters and a wheelbase of 2,67 meters.

This battle translates into a passenger compartment approved for a maximum of five passengers. Three of them are located in a rear row with correct space, although with a central seat more limited in size and comfort. Regarding load capacity, the Eclipse Cross announces a minimum trunk volume of 404 liters, expandable to 1.153 liters when the rear row is folded down. A reduced volume due to the batteries of the plug-in hybrid mechanics.

Mechanical range and gearboxes of the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross

New times demand new efficiency measures. Mitsubishi intends to leave the European market, but until that happens, the Eclipse Cross receives an important novelty at the end of 2020. As corresponds to the needs of compliance with emissions, it is detached from all its gasoline mechanics, going on to have a range based entirely on ZERO-labeled plug-in hybrid units DGT.

Like its big brother, the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross exclusively mounts a highly electrified unit. It consists of a four-cylinder gasoline engine and 2.360 cubic centimeters that develops 98 horsepower and 193 Nm of torque. Added to it is a front electric motor with 82 horsepower, and a rear electric motor with 95 horsepower. Both are supplied with power by one centrally positioned lithium-ion battery with 13,8 kWh capacity.

The presence of the two electric motors provides an electric all-wheel drive system. The management is derived from an automatic transmission and the maximum recharging power is 22 kW in direct current. the whole set develops a maximum power of 188 horsepower with a 100% electric approved autonomy of 45 kilometers. Top speed of 162 km/h and acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 10,9 seconds.

Equipment of the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross

From doors to inside the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross offers a well presented cabin. Although hard plastics abound, the sense of perceived quality is correct thanks to the use of more refined materials such as leather, although only available in the highest finishes in the range. The environment is technological, but not as much as other rival models that enjoy more advanced systems.

As usual in the Japanese house, the Eclipse Cross offers different levels of finish and equipment: Motion, Kaiteki and Kaiteki +. The differences between levels are clearly noticeable in the technological section, although there are also variations in some external elements such as tires. Despite this, the customization is not very great, with all the finishes being very closed in terms of configuration.

As far as equipment is concerned, the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross offers the most modern technology of the house, as corresponds to the most current model of it. It should be noted: rear view camera, LED headlights, climate control, multimedia system with 8-inch screen, digital radio, browser, connectivity for mobile devices, access and keyless start and a large security team and driving assistants.

The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross according to Euro NCAP

The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross was subjected to the demanding impact tests organized by Euro NCAP in 2017, rising as the safest vehicle in its category with 5 stars and a score that is distributed as follows. Protection for adult occupants in case of impact was 97 percent and 78 percent for infants. In the event of a pedestrian being run over, it has obtained a remarkable 80 percent. Finally, in terms of driving aids, it has achieved a high 71 percent. Today these valuations remain valid since there has been no change in the structure of the vehicle.

The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross of Km0 and second hand

The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross is a recent model in our market. With only three years of life, it has not yet had enough time to build a commercial reputation. It is not a product of special commercial pull, and therefore the secondary sales markets do not offer many possible alternatives. In them we observe that the average depreciation is higher than the average, being between 30 and 35%.

The offer of Km 0 vehicles is practically nil, just a few unit dinners, all of them prior to the restyling at the end of 2020 and therefore with gasoline mechanics. The used and second-hand channel does not offer many more alternatives, barely a hundred. We observed that prices start from amounts close to 15.000 euros for 2018 models with just over 100 thousand kilometers accumulated and with 150 horsepower gasoline mechanics.

Rivals of the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross

By size, the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross is located in the compact SUV segment, although by aesthetic approach there are not many rivals against which to compare it. The same thing happens in terms of its plug-in hybrid approach, where it is difficult to find the clearest enemies. Undoubtedly the most similar are the Ford Kuga, the Nissan Qashqai, the Toyota RAV4 and the Volkswagen Tiguan, all with plug-in hybrid systems. But in addition to them we can add usual units of the C-SUV market, such as SEAT Ateca, Peugeot 3008KIA Sportage, Hyundai Tucson o Skoda Karoq. Unlike the previous ones, these do not use highly electrified hybrid systems, but they are similar in size and price.
