The history of MG It is an active story with many changes. The legendary British manufacturer is best known for its classic two-seater roadsters. It has passed through various hands, from being part of British Leyland to BMW. Today it is owned by the Chinese giant SAIC, which has recovered the firm with products such as MG Plug In Hybrid.
It is a next-generation C-SUV with which the brand is reintroduced in Europe and Spain. It has an exclusively thermal version called MGHS. It is a new model in these parts, although it has been marketed since 2018 in China and much of Asia. It is the manufacturer's largest SUV, and is therefore considered its flagship. At the end of 2023, an update focused mainly on an aesthetic change will be introduced.
Following this evolution, The EHS changes its name to be officially called HS Plug In Hybrid, in order to better differentiate it from its version with a thermal engine. Its production takes place at the SAIC plant in Ningde, Fujian province. From there it is exported to different points of sale, more and more every day.
Technical characteristics of the MG Plug In Hybrid
When developing the HS Plug In Hybrid, MG has thought about globalizing the product. That means that has had to create a completely new structure for the C-SUV. Capable of adapting to different regulations, as well as capable of adapting to different mechanical solutions. This new modular platform is the one it shares with its brother in the range, the MG ZS, which also offers PHEV alternatives in a slightly smaller size.
For the case at hand, the MG S Plug In Hybrid is located within the compact SUV category. Its exterior measurements reveal it: 4,61 meters long, 1,88 meters wide and 1,68 meters high. To these dimensions must be added a wheelbase of 2,72 meters. A battle that allows you to offer a cabin for a maximum of five passengers.
Three of those passengers are installed on a rear bench seat with adequate space for legs and head, although passengers over 1,85 meters will have some discomfort. As far as load capacity is concerned, The HS Plug In Hybrid offers a trunk with 448 liters of minimum capacity, expandable to 1.375 liters when we completely lower the second row of seats.
Mechanical range and gearboxes of the MG Plug In Hybrid
Unlike other European manufacturers, MG has not chosen to offer mechanical alternatives. The HS Plug In Hybrid range is made up of a single unit. A plug-in hybrid with the DGT ZERO label, which entails interesting advantages at the operational level. This version is connected to a 10-speed automatic gearbox that sends all the force of the assembly to the front axle without the option of all-wheel drive.
The HS Plug In Hybrid is a gasoline plug-in hybrid. The main block is a turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 1.490 cubic centimeters of displacement. By itself it develops 162 horsepower at 5.500 revolutions and 250 Nm of torque between 1.700 and 4.300 revolutions. A very wide range of rotation that allows us to have a certain response when the battery is finished.
Connected to the main block is a 16,6 kWh capacity lithium-ion battery. It feeds a front electric motor with 122 horsepower and 230 Nm of torque. The total sum is 258 horses and 270 Nm of torque. Its approved electric autonomy is 52 kilometers. When recharging, a maximum power of 3,7 kW in alternating current is available. A not very high figure where a faster system is missing.
Equipment of the MG Plug In Hybrid
From doors to inside the MG is capable of surprising more than one. Far from the concept that we may have of a Chinese car, the reality is that the EHS cabin meets all European quality standards, the most demanding in the world. The feeling of perceived quality is good thanks to well-selected materials and adjustments, which for the most part, give a good touch and an optimal feeling of durability.
To facilitate the purchase process The MG HS Plug In Hybrid distributes all its equipment in two different levels. From lowest to highest they are: Comfort and Luxury. The technology load at the access level is good, although there are clear differences between the steps. Aesthetically no notable changes are applied, focusing on insignificant details such as tires or seats. The range of paints is short, just four colors, which do not involve an extra outlay.
As far as equipment is concerned, it must be recognized that the MG HS Plug In Hybrid does not leave any key element uninstalled. The technology is not the most cutting-edge on the market, but it offers much more than what may be needed. It should be noted: digital instrumentation, LED headlights, navigation, connectivity for smartphones, two-zone climate control, multimedia system with 10,1-inch touch panel, 360º camera, sunroof and a complete team of driving assistants.

By sections, the results were as follows: 9,2 in safety of adult passengers, 8,1 in safety of child passengers, 6,4 in vulnerability of pedestrians, and 7,6 in functioning of driving assistants. These assessments remain valid after the update at the end of 2023 as no changes are made to the structure of the vehicle.
Rivals of the MG Plug In Hybrid
MG has begun its landing on the old continent with a model that attacks the main market, that of C-SUVs. The HS Plug In Hybrid competes in such a determining segment, where it will face some of the best-selling models. We must focus our list on models that have plug-in hybrid versions, something that is becoming more common every day. Some rivals are: Volkswagen Tiguan, Peugeot 3008, Hyundai Tucson, Ford Kuga, Opel Grandland X, Citroen C5 Aircross, Jeep Compass y Toyota RAV4. More models will be added in the future.
