The Chinese automotive industry has stepped up its plan to conquer other territories. Every month a new brand comes onto the market, ready to break the status quo of the Old Continent. MG, which is now under the control of the SAIC Group, is one of the most active manufacturers in our country thanks to its offer of thermal, hybrid and electric models. In fact, the MGHS It is positioned as one of the best-selling models of the house due to its good qualities.

Although in Spain it began to become popular after the COVID-19 pandemic, The HS is a model with a long history in its home country. In China it was officially launched on the market in 2018. and since then it has had few new developments beyond the plug-in hybrid version, known as MG HS Plug In Hybrid. Now, a completely new iteration is coming to light, unifying the range and serving as a basis for customers to get to know it better in other facets.

Technical characteristics of the MG HS

MG HS 2024 design

Considered the successor to the MG GS, the HS is sold in China under the name MG Pilot. This is an attractive-looking mid-size SUV that is based on the same base as the third-generation Roewe RX5. The Roewe model will not leave its home country but thanks to its multi-energy platform it can adopt various types of engines. Among them we have pure thermal versions and a new, more powerful PHEV plug-in hybrid.

By size we can say that the HS is the largest SUV in the house, above the MG ZS. Thanks to its dimensions it is situated in the D-SUV segment as it measures 4,65 meters long, 1,98 meters wide and 1,68 meters high. These dimensions must be added to a wheelbase of 2,76 metres which helps it to have great habitability. To these dimensions we must add that the new HS PHEV grows in length to reach 4,67 metres at its bumpers.

The generous wheelbase allows it to offer a comfortable cabin for up to five passengers. Three of them are located in a second row that is spacious even for passengers of 1,85 metres in height. As for the volume offered by its trunk, the new MG HS offers a minimum of 407 litersAs is standard, it can be generously expanded by folding down the second row of seats completely in a fixed 60:40 ratio, reaching a maximum of 1.484 litres.

Mechanical range and gearboxes of the MG HS

MG HS 2024 range

MG's revision of the HS platform allows it to improve the mechanical options that we already knew about. Despite this, it only offers two variants, as we have already said. A gasoline version with a C label and a plug-in hybrid version with a ZERO stickerIt is a shame that MG has not taken the opportunity to introduce some intermediate electrified system like the one that is presented in the new MG ZS with ECO label.

The HS only has one mechanical assembly consisting of a 1,5-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine developing 170 horsepower and 275 Nm of torque. It is associated with a six-speed manual gearbox or, optionally, with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Despite the good performance figures, the problem arises in the consumption figure. At best, it is approved for an average consumption in the WLTP cycle of 7,5 liters. A lot for an engine of that size.

Equipment of the MG HS

MGHS 6

Although MG is no longer the English company we all knew, its move to the SAIC Group has allowed it to offer a wide collection of safety systems and connectivity technologies. Inside, the MG HS has a well-presented cabin, both in terms of equipment and quality. It has little to be inferior to other generalist European firms with a The range of finishes is structured into two levels: Comfort and Luxury. At all times, the safety elements collected under the umbrella of MG Pilot technology stand out.

Level Comfort finish includes as standard Automatic LED headlights with follow me home function, rear camera, rear parking sensors, electric and heated rearview mirrors, air conditioning, rain sensor, electric front seats, hands-free key, cruise control and electric handbrake with auto-hold function. In addition, it has two 12,3-inch screens for the digital instrument panel and infotainment.

The most complete version, Luxury, increases the equipment with more gadgets. Among the most notable features we can mention 19-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels, front fog lights, electric adjustable, folding and heated rearview mirrors with memory, electric driver's seat with 6-position lumbar adjustment, electric tailgate, 360° camera, 8-speaker audio system or wireless charging for smartphones.

The MG HS according to Euro NCAP

The new generation of the MG HS has surpassed the usual Euro NCAP safety tests with five stars. This model was rated in the same way as the plug-in hybrid, with notable results. It scored 90% for adult passenger protection and 85% for child passengers. It scored 83% for active driving aids and 74% for pedestrian and cyclist protection. These values make it one of the safest models in its segment.

MG HS Rivals

Although the new MG HS is a D-SUV in size, its natural rivals are in the C-SUV segment. The reason for this is that its prices play in that league and, therefore, the brand wants to attack these brands and models. Thus, from the list of rivals we can highlight: Kia Sportage, Citroen C5 Aircross, Ssangyong Korando, Nissan Qashqai, Peugeot 3008, Ford Kuga, Hyundai Tucson y Seat Ateca, among others. As an objective fact to consider, we must indicate that the price-product-equipment ratio is, perhaps, the best in its entire segment.
