When Mercedes decided to move the A-Class from the B segment to the C segment, it may have been one of the most lucrative and successful moments in the company's history. That change brought a breath of fresh air and a surge in revenue and commercial success. The second generation of the A-Class has spawned a very large and acclaimed family of models, including the Mercedes A-Class Sedan.
We have tested this car:

Point by point, the A-Class Sedan strikes a perfect balance.
Never before, since the A-Class was rebranded in 2012, have we seen a body style like this. The Mercedes A-Class Sedan attempts to fill the gap left by its siblings . It is the second of the four body styles in the range and was unveiled to the public at the 2018 Paris Motor Show. Subsequently, at the end of 2022, the A-Class Sedan will disappear from the market without a successor.
Technical characteristics of the Mercedes Class A Sedan
The Mercedes A-Class Sedan belongs to the smallest model range in the Mercedes lineup. It shares its platform with its siblings and other models like the Mercedes GLA and GLB . This modular structure, known as MFA2 , features significant improvements over its predecessor. Among these new qualities, the ease of adaptation to new powertrain configurations stands out.
As we've already mentioned, the A-Class Sedan occupies a middle ground in the range. Its dimensions place it between its siblings: 4,55 meters long, 1,79 meters wide, and 1,44 meters high . Adding to these figures is a wheelbase of 2,72 meters, which provides a somewhat limited but adequate interior space for four passengers.
Its trunk capacity is 50 liters larger than the compact A-Class and 40 liters smaller than the CLA Coupé. The Mercedes A-Class Sedan has a minimum trunk volume of 420 liters , which can be increased to over 1,000 liters with the second row of seats folded down. The plug-in hybrid versions do not reduce cargo capacity, maintaining the same dimensions.
Mechanical range and gearboxes of the Mercedes Class A Sedan

The MFA2 platform was designed from the outset to accommodate a wide range of powertrain options. These options include efficient solutions adapted to current and future regulations and restrictions. The range comprises diesel, gasoline, and plug-in hybrid variants . The latter boasts 218 horsepower and an all-electric range of 77 kilometers thanks to a 15,6 kWh gross capacity lithium-ion battery.
In the gasoline engine range, power outputs range from 136 to 306 horsepower in the AMG A 35 4MATIC+ Sedan. All engines feature a turbocharged four-cylinder architecture. Transmissions are available as either manual or a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. Only the most powerful models will have access to 4MATIC all-wheel drive.
The diesel engines, on the other hand, offer a more modest power range, from 116 to 190 horsepower . Like the gasoline engines, they feature turbocharged four-cylinder units with options for manual or eight-speed automatic transmissions. Unlike the gasoline versions, the diesel A-Class Sedans are not available with all-wheel drive.
Equipment of the Mercedes Class A Sedan

Besides its varied and efficient engine range, the Mercedes A-Class Sedan stands out for its extensive interior equipment. Mercedes offers different equipment packages that can modify the aesthetics and technological features of the cabin. Thanks to this, we can choose a basic model with the Progressive line , more elegant versions with the Advance and Premium trims , and a sportier one with the AMG line.
Standard equipment includes features such as comfort seats, LED headlights, 17-inch alloy wheels, cloth/leather upholstery, climate control, a rearview camera, cruise control, and numerous active safety and driver assistance systems. The MBUX multimedia system, with its digital instrument cluster, voice control, and extensive suite of driver assistance features, is particularly noteworthy.
That's the basic equipment. If we start adding packages and options, the price goes up, but so does the technology. Thanks to this, the Mercedes A-Class Sedan can rival models from higher segments . Highlights include: Head-Up Display, navigation with virtual reality, power and climate-controlled seats, LED ambient lighting, multimedia system with 10,25-inch screens, sunroof, keyless entry and start, and matrix headlights, among many others.

The Mercedes Class A Sedan according to Euro NCAP
Model after model, Mercedes reinforces the safety of its vehicles to unprecedented levels. The A-Class range is one of the safest on the market. In this case, since the Mercedes A-Class Sedan shares not only the platform but also all other safety features, the scores obtained in the Euro NCAP tests are the same. The European organization has awarded it the maximum five stars . It received outstanding ratings in several categories, including adult and child occupant protection and pedestrian protection. These ratings remain valid after the update at the end of 2022, as there were no changes to the vehicle's platform.
The Mercedes Class A Sedan of Km 0 and Second Hand
Although the compact A-Class has been on the market since 2012, the sedan version is entirely new. This has led to a significant shortage of models on the used car market . A quick look at the market reveals that the majority of vehicles for sale are the compact model. Over time, the market will fill up with more units, which, as is typical for Mercedes, will maintain a high resale value.
The same applies to the nearly new (Km 0) market. The accumulated stock of Mercedes A-Class Sedan units is limited . The manufacturer knows that sales won't be as high as those of the hatchback, and therefore there aren't many units available. The few that are available have very reasonable prices, starting at around €27.000. In other words, prices very similar to those offered at dealerships.
The rivals of the Mercedes Class A Sedan

What Mercedes has achieved with the A-Class Sedan is a model that defies easy categorization and is difficult to compete with. While its siblings have clear and direct rivals, the Mercedes A-Class Sedan only has one main competitor in the premium segment : the Audi A3 Sedan . We can also add others such as the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé , the Mazda3 Sedan , and the Hyundai i30 Fastback.

Price of the Mercedes A Class Sedan
It's important to remember that the A-Class Sedan belongs to the premium segment. This means its prices aren't comparable to those of other mainstream models, which, incidentally, also can't match the German car's capabilities. At best, the starting price for the Mercedes A-Class Sedan is €39.212 for the A 180 with automatic transmission. On the other end of the spectrum is the sporty Mercedes-AMG A 35 4MATIC+ Sedan, with a minimum price of €63.338 for its 306 horsepower and automatic transmission.
