The compact segment is a very important segment for the market and the brands. Although SUVs have colonized sales, all manufacturers continue to bet on the market. From Japan comes one of the most complete and sensible alternatives, the Mazda 3. A different compact in its design and concept, although capable of complying with the basic rules of the category.

The history of the Mazda 3 starts at the beginning of the century. The first generation is launched on the markets in 2003, adopting different names in countries such as China or Japan, where it is marketed under the Axela nomenclature. Since its first edition it has always shown several different bodies, one compact and one sedan. By size it is positioned between the Mazda 2 as Mazda 6.

Over the years Mazda has been marketing different generations. The last of them landed in 2019 with a very attractive imageIts design is the most striking feature, but thanks to considerable changes in different sections, the Mazda 3 has managed to position itself as one of the most logical purchases in the segment. In mid-2024 it will receive a small update, focused on mechanical and technological improvements.

Technical characteristics of the Mazda 3

When developing a new generation, Mazda engineers have started from a blank sheet. The new model shares absolutely nothing with its predecessor, not even the platform. The new Mazda 3 bets on a new generation architecture based on SkyActiv technology. It improves dynamic capabilities thanks to greater rigidity, although it does not allow the entry of electrified mechanics. This platform is shared with the Mazda CX-30.

Due to its size, the Mazda 3 is integrated into the compact segment, growing slightly with respect to the last generation. Externally it reaches 4,46 meters long, 1,79 meters wide and 1,43 meters high.. If we talk about the Sedan body, the dimensions increase slightly to 4,66 meters long, 1,79 meters wide and 1,44 meters high. The two models share a wheelbase, set at 2,72 meters.

Such a battle allows to offer cabins for a maximum of five passengers. The rear row is somewhat narrow in the distance for the legs, limiting the shoulder height for three adults. As far as load capacity is concerned, the Mazda 3 announces a minimum trunk of 358 liters. This measure grows in the case of the Sedan body, which shows a minimum volume of 450 liters. Both dimensions are expandable thanks to fully folding rear bench seats.

Mechanical range and gearboxes of the Mazda 3

Mazda has always been a strong advocate of "rightsizing" engines, that is, engines with optimum displacement. While the rest of the brands bet on reducing the size of the blocks, the Japanese increased them. Finally, time has proved them right. On top of that the Japanese have developed the e-Skyactiv technology, highly efficient blocks with micro-hybrid systems that allow them to offer the DGT ECO label.

The entire range of the Mazda 3 is based on gasoline, both the compact and the sedan body. The offer is made up of two blocks. On the one hand, the range starts with the e-Skyactiv-G. It is a 2,5-litre naturally aspirated engine that generates 140 horsepower and 240 Nm of torqueAll power is sent to the front wheels through a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed torque converter automatic transmission.

The most powerful of the family is the Mazda 3 Skyactiv-X. A state-of-the-art engine with advanced technologies that derives from the previous block with four cylinders and 1.998 cubic centimeters. In this case the power is increased to 186 horsepower with 240 Nm of torque. This unit allows power to be derived to the front axle or to all four wheels through an all-wheel drive scheme. It incorporates manual or automatic gearboxes.

Mazda 3 Equipment

It is clear that Mazda wants to offer more than the vast majority of brands. Although the price of the compact leans more towards the generalist side, the quality of its interior clearly bets on the premium segment. Dedicated attention to detail and a correct choice of materials causes us to talk about one of the best compact in the segment, with nothing to envy superior models like the Mercedes A-Class or Audi A3.

As usual in the Japanese brand, the range of equipment is divided into different levels. Very closed packages where there are few customization options beyond the exterior color and the tone of the upholstery. From lowest to highest equipment we find: Prime-Line, Centre-Line, Homura, Nagisa, Exclusive-Line and Takumi. The aesthetic differences between one and the other are minimal, focusing all the attention on the interior and, above all, on the number of technological elements included.

As far as equipment is concerned, the Mazda 3 offers a wide selection of systems and technologiesThe list is long, and highlights include: Full LED headlights, keyless entry and start, multimedia system with 10,25-inch touchscreen, connectivity for mobile devices, voice control via Amazon Alexa, climate control, parking camera, sunroof and a full range of safety assistants and security features.

Video test of the Mazda 3

The Mazda 3 according to Euro NCAP

The Mazda 3 was subjected in 2019 to the demanding impact tests organized by Euro NCAP receiving the highest possible score, 5 stars. The impact tests were passed with the following percentages. In the event of an impact, protection for adult and child occupants was 98 and 87 percent. 81 percent protection was obtained in the event of a pedestrian or cyclist being hit. Finally, in terms of active driving aids, it achieved 73 percent protection. These valuations are shared with the sedan body by using the same platform.

The Mazda 3 of Km0 and second hand

Along with the all-road CX-5, the Mazda 3 It is the second best-selling model of the Japanese firm in Spain. It is a much-loved model in alternative sales channels for its reputation for durability and quality. Thanks to this, it is not difficult to find units available for sale, where it is verified that the depreciation value is around 29%, a statistical data that positions it in the average of its segment.

If we take a look at the used market we see a wide variety of options. Prices vary depending on the generation and condition of the vehicle. So we can find minimum amounts of around 1.500 euros for first and second generation models with more than 200 thousand kilometers. The Km 0 channel also offers interesting alternatives, with budgets starting at around 22.000 euros. A difference of just 2.000 euros compared to new models.

Rivals of the Mazda 3

The Mazda 3 is part of the competitive European C segment. Its positioning places it at an intermediate point between the general models and the premium ones.. The Japanese's list of rivals is long and extensive, although against his enemies he is positioned as one of the best in terms of driving and quality. Thus we can find models such as: Volkswagen Golf, Peugeot 308, SEAT Leon, Ford Focus, Hyundai i30, Kia ceed, Opel Astra, Toyota Corolla, Renault Mégane and many more, because we must not forget that we are talking about one of the most popular commercial niches.
