Leapmotor was founded in December 2015 in Hangzhou , China, and specializes in electric vehicles and related technologies. In 2018, it developed the "Lingxin 01" artificial intelligence chip , designed for autonomous vehicles with deep learning capabilities. This chip was created in collaboration with Zhejiang Dahua Technology.

Between 2018 and 2021, it launched three electric models: the S01 (coupe), the T03 (city car), and the C11 (crossover). The S01 was introduced in 2019, followed by the T03 in 2020, with a range of 403 kilometers, and the C11, also in 2020, with a range of 600 kilometers.

Leapmotor forged key strategic partnerships, such as with FAW in 2020 to develop smart electric vehicles. In 2023, Stellantis acquired a 20% stake in Leapmotor for €1.500 billion , creating Leapmotor International to export and manufacture cars outside of China. Production of the T03 model was planned for Poland in 2024, although it was later moved to Slovakia and Germany.

Leapmotor International will begin sales in Europe in September 2024, expanding to India, Asia-Pacific and South America. From 2025, the company will launch six new models in global markets, consolidating its international expansion.
