Cupra is not only an aspirational and sporty brand, it also aims to become one of the Volkswagen Group's leading brands in electric mobility. In the future, electric vehicles will be commonplace, and today's revolutionary models will be the norm tomorrow. The Cupra Born is the brand's first electric vehicle.

We should consider Cupra as a specific division of SEAT , a recently created brand that aims to become a company with a distinctly sporty character . The Cupra Ateca and the Cupra León were its first products; the latter ventured into electrified technology, initially with plug-in hybrid systems.

The Cupra Born compact takes its name from the famous Barcelona neighborhood . A product launched in the spring of 2021 with no prior experience, this 100% electric vehicle, closely related to the Volkswagen ID.3 , aims to offer a more passionate driving experience thanks to its bolder and more aggressive design. In early 2026, the Spanish compact underwent a refresh focused on aesthetic updates and significant technical and mechanical improvements.

Technical characteristics of the Cupra Born

As we've already mentioned, the Born is Cupra's first electric vehicle, although not SEAT's first electric vehicle, as that distinction belongs to the SEAT Mii Electric . It's a joint development with Volkswagen, specifically with the ID.3. Both use the same MEB platform, exclusive to electric vehicles , the same one used by other models like the Volkswagen ID.4 and the Skoda Enyaq.

In this specific case, the MEB architecture is adapted to the specific dimensions of a compact model like the SEAT León. Externally, it measures 4,34 meters long, 1,81 meters wide, and 1,54 meters high . To these dimensions, we must add a wheelbase of 2,77 meters, which allows it to offer a cabin homologated for a maximum of five passengers.

Three of them are seated in a rear row that offers excellent interior space thanks to ample legroom. Three adults will find it a bit cramped due to the limited shoulder room. As for cargo capacity, the Cupra Born offers a trunk with a minimum capacity of 385 liters across all versions. This is slightly more than that of a five-door Cupra León.

Mechanical range and gearboxes of the Cupra Born

Cupra's first electric vehicle, designed from the outset to represent sustainable mobility. This means its powertrain range consists solely of 100% electric systems. The entire range sends power to the rear axle, regardless of the power output or variant selected.

The range revolves around three lithium-ion battery options with 50, 58, and 79 kWh net capacity . The entry-level version is the Born with 170 horsepower, a standard battery, and a homologated range of 400 kilometers. It can be charged at up to 11 kW using AC power. Next up is the Born Plus with 190 horsepower and a homologated range (WLTP) of 450 kilometers, powered by a 58 kWh battery.

Next up are the Born models with larger batteries. The entry-level option is the Born Endurance, boasting 231 horsepower and a homologated range of 600 kilometers (WLTP cycle). The most powerful of them all is the Born VZ , with a maximum output of 326 horsepower . Its 79 kWh battery also provides a homologated range of 600 kilometers. In these cases, the DC fast charging power reaches up to 185 kW.

Equipment of the Cupra Born

Inside, the Cupra Born offers a style somewhere between the ID.3 and its siblings . The interior design borrows elements from various models. The overall quality is decent, though it could be better. There's an excessive use of hard plastics, which, while they feel acceptable, could be improved. The equipment level will be slightly upgraded in 2026.

As befits a premium brand like Cupra, the Born comes standard with a fairly comprehensive equipment package. Even so, the range is divided into several trim levels to allow for greater customer customization. From lowest to highest trim level, these are: Born, Born Plus, Endurance, and VZ . The main difference between the trims lies in the equipment levels, although there are also mechanical and aesthetic variations.

In terms of equipment, the Cupra Born offers a wide range of cutting-edge technologies and systems . The list is long, but highlights include features such as LED matrix headlights, a 360-degree camera, a head-up display, a panoramic sunroof, leather upholstery, a 10,25-inch digital instrument cluster, a 12,9-inch multimedia screen, voice control, connected services, and a comprehensive suite of driver assistance systems.

The Cupra Born according to Euro NCAP

In terms of safety, electric vehicles have demonstrated great potential. The Cupra Born underwent Euro NCAP crash tests and received the highest possible rating: five stars . It is one of the safest electric compact cars. The results by category are: 89 out of 100 for adult occupant protection, 87 out of 100 for child occupant protection, 76 out of 100 for pedestrian vulnerability, and 76 out of 100 for driver assistance systems. These ratings remain valid after the 2026 update, as there are no changes to the vehicle's structure.

Rivals of Cupra Born

All brands are at that crucial transition point where they launch their first electric models. Rivalry between manufacturers is growing daily, and the Cupra Born doesn't face many direct competitors, but its competition is more significant . Besides its twin, the Volkswagen ID.3, we can add models like the Nissan LEAF and the Renault ZOE —similar products that have been on the market much longer. The Spanish model's advantage lies in its more advanced technology and more appealing design.
