SUVs have colonized and conquered every market segment. They come in all sizes, formats, and brands. The newly launched Cupra brand is entering the C-SUV market with a coupé-like design with the Cupra Formentor . This high-performance crossover, with its features and equipment, aims to compete at the highest levels of the industry.

This is the third product presented by SEAT 's subsidiary brand , following the Cupra Ateca and the Cupra León . Its main characteristic is that it doesn't have a twin model within the Spanish brand's product portfolio. In other words, while the León and Ateca have a counterpart in the parent brand, the Formentor is exclusive to Cupra.

Unveiled in early 2020, this is the first generation we've seen hit the road. A coupe SUV that joins the increasingly popular trend of off-road models with a sporty look. But unlike some of its rivals, the Cupra Formentor is clearly focused on performance , as demonstrated by its high-performance engine range with efficient, high-tech solutions. In the summer of 2024, this generation will undergo a facelift to ensure it's ready for the second half of its life cycle.

Technical characteristics of the Cupra Formentor

Although we've already mentioned that the Formentor doesn't have a twin model in the SEAT lineup, beneath its attractive and sporty lines lies an evolved MQB platform from the Volkswagen Group . This is the same platform used by its siblings, the Ateca and León, as well as other models from the German conglomerate such as the Audi A3 , the Skoda Karoq , and the Volkswagen Tiguan , among others.

The MQB platform can be adapted to various dimensions depending on the needs. In the case of the Cupra Formentor, we've opted for compact dimensions, ideal for the C-SUV segment: 4,45 meters long, 1,84 meters wide, and 1,51 meters high . These dimensions are complemented by a wheelbase of 2,68 meters, providing ample space for a cabin homologated for five passengers.

Given its coupé-like design, the Formentor's trunk is smaller than that of a traditional SUV. The minimum official volume is 450 liters , 35 liters less than its sibling, the Ateca. Although its styling suggests a rugged, off-road look, the Cupra Formentor doesn't actually have a true off-road character due to its very limited off-road capabilities.

Mechanical range and gearboxes of the Cupra Formentor

A sporty SUV coupé. Cupra was born to emphasize SEAT's aggressive character. And this is perfectly demonstrated in its engine range. Engines that combine traditional solutions with the latest generation versions committed to efficiency and fuel economy. The portfolio includes diesel, gasoline, and plug-in hybrid versions . The latter uses the same system as the Cupra León, offering 204 or 272 horsepower and an electric range of up to 126 kilometers thanks to a 19,7 kWh gross capacity battery.

In terms of power, the range starts with the Formentor 2.0 TDI, producing 150 horsepower and 340 Nm of torque . Offering the same performance figures is the Formentor 1.5 TSI MHEV, also with 150 horsepower and the DGT's ECO label . One step up is the Formentor 2.0 TSI, boasting 190 horsepower and 320 Nm of torque . All models come standard with a seven-speed DSG automatic transmission. A similar situation exists with the drivetrain: front-wheel drive in the entry-level versions and 4MOTION all-wheel drive as an option.

The most powerful versions are positioned as units with a clear performance focus. The Formentor VZ 2.0 TSI boosts its output to either 265 or 333 horsepower with 400 Nm of torque . The most extreme of all is the VZ5 . Its 2.5-liter, five-cylinder gasoline engine delivers up to 390 horsepower and 480 Nm of torque . It features a specific, high-performance tuning that is always paired with a 4MOTION all-wheel-drive system.

Equipment of the Cupra Formentor

Cupra isn't just SEAT's performance division; each of its models represents the pinnacle of the range. Therefore, they offer features that can't be found in conventional models. In the case of the Formentor, it boasts a well-finished interior, with high-quality materials and precise fit and finish, creating a premium feel combined with the brand's signature sportiness.

The SUV coupé is only offered in one trim level, so there are no options for major modifications beyond different body colors and various wheel designs up to 20 inches. Personalization of elements is also limited. Cupra lacks an individualization program, which could be a disadvantage considering its target exclusive clientele. From lowest to highest trim level, the available options are: Formentor, Beyond, VZ, and VZ Extreme.

In terms of equipment, the Cupra Formentor offers a wealth of technology. It boasts the latest advancements and solutions that the Martorell-based manufacturer has to offer . Among the extensive list of features are: full LED headlights, keyless entry and start, Brembo brakes, electric sport seats, a multimedia system with a nine-inch screen, a parking camera, dual-zone climate control, a navigation system, mobile device connectivity, and a comprehensive suite of driver assistance systems.

When assessing its safety, the European evaluation body, Euro NCAP, awarded the Formentor a five-star safety rating in 2025 , the highest possible score. The results by category are as follows: 91 out of 100 for adult occupant protection, 86 out of 100 for child occupant protection, 79 out of 100 for pedestrian vulnerability, and 77 out of 100 for the performance of driver assistance systems.

Despite being on the market for only a short time, the Cupra Formentor is gaining popularity with customers thanks to its attractive design and excellent value for money. Alternative sales channels show a wide variety of models available, primarily in the used and pre-owned sectors. In these channels, we observe that the depreciation rate is average compared to its direct competitors.

A look at the used car market reveals that the several dozen vehicles for sale have very low mileage. Prices start at around €29.000 for models with up to 15.000 kilometers. The selection of nearly new (Km 0) cars is much wider, although prices are barely different from dealership list prices.

Rivals of the Cupra Formentor

The Cupra Formentor targets a very exclusive potential customer , one that prioritizes performance and aesthetics above other qualities. Despite this, the Spanish model will have to contend with other rivals, some within its own family, such as the Audi Q3 Sportback . We can also add other models like the BMW X2 , the Renault Arkana , and the Mercedes GLA . Although these are premium rivals, the idea is to compete against them by offering a lower price and slightly more modest performance.

When it comes to the price, the Formentor clearly establishes its status as a slightly more upscale model than SEAT. As stated, the starting price for the Cupra Formentor is €33.262 , without any offers or promotions. This price corresponds to a base model with a 1.5 TSI 150-horsepower engine. The most expensive model is the Formentor VZ Extreme, with a starting price of €56.819, also without discounts.
